I mentioned this in another comment, BUT FORREAL, Jamie gives baby gay vibes. Jamie goes on and on about how much she “hates” Angeline because she’s blond and pretty and has lovely eyes and a cute smile, and when Angeline is nice to her she seems unable to reconcile her irrational “hatred” with how Angeline is as a person. It’s giving “I have a crush on another girl but my brain can’t process it because same-sex attraction is never legitimatized by those around me so I’m going to assume what I’m feeling is actually dislike”. She kept a LOCK of her hair. If Jamie were a boy, that’d be a dead giveaway of a middle school crush. Keep in mind that Jamie never shows the same intensity she feels for Angeline for boys she SUPPOSEDLY has crushes on; she keeps every guy on a list of whose socially acceptable for her to like, calculating her chances with Hudson, the “eight cutest boy”. She never seems to ACTUALLY like these boys, only bothering because it’s what she thinks she’s supposed to do. What I’m saying is, for supposedly having a crush on him, Hudson never occupies Jamie’s thoughts like Angeline does.

YES I completely agree! It especially stands out to me because it mirrors almost exactly (besides the keeping a lock of hair lol) how I acted about a girl I "hated" - and later figured out I actually liked - when I was Jamie's age. I said I couldn't stand this girl but could never actually give a reason why - she was pretty and popular but always nice to me, and despite "hating" her I'd basically melt into a puddle whenever I talked to her, and I was way more focused on her than I really had any need to be, all of which remind me of Jamie's interactions with Angeline. I had a "crush" on one of the most popular guys in school because he was a safe, common option, and a lot of my friends also liked him so I guess he just made sense as crush? Also because I felt really jealous of him and the girl I liked whenever they were together, I just thought I was jealous of her, not of him lol, even though I almost never thought or cared about him outside of when he was with this girl - it reminds me of how jealous Jamie gets when Angeline is with Hudson; I don't think it's about Hudson. It was actually a shock how much of myself I saw in these books once I looked back on them and had the perspective to notice it. Jamie talking about Angeline could easily have been ripped from my middle school journals about the girl I liked. And this seems to be a common experience among WLW. So yeah I'm definitely on team "Jamie was gay and in love with Angeline".

As a kid (8-10 years old or so) I read the Dear Dumb Diary series and ABSOLUTELY BELIEVED THIS WHOLEHEARTEDLY. This was even before I really had an understanding of romantic attraction (I’m AroAce and nonamorous), much less same-gender romantic attraction, but I STILL NOTICED IT. I distinctly remember reading and thinking: “…Does she _like_ her?… OH YES SHE DOES!”

I always loved this series for being the one female-oriented diary series on the shelf that was unapologetically Weird. Dork Diaries tried, but it was held back by having a 'not like other girls' disdain for femininity played straight while simultaneously indulging in feminine tropes, and it just seemed more hypocritical than anything. Like the message was that you can be QuirkyTM so long as it is still vaguely squeaky clean and aesthetically feminine. Jamie on the other hand, was amazing weird girl rep written by a self-aware author.

I was thinking about this the other week while staring at my 2 scented Loreal Kids shampoo bottles, and couldn't recall exactly which middle-school girl diary series it was from. I almost mistakenly attributed it to Dork Diaries and then this video came through my recommended a short while later. And the results are...nothing. It doesn't work, girls. Jamie was just high and in denial on that Angelina 3-in-1 shampoo.

I loved these books and how mean and weird the characters were. I was a kid that did everything right, was too adultish for my age (caused by trauma) and in general had a big sense of what was right and wrong. So reading these books, I could emotionally put myself in shoes where I could just be a proper shitty child, have no real intelligence and just be a kid. I found it so funny how absurd the main character was and acted. I always liked these kind of characters. Shaggy from scooby doo, the Mad Hatter from Alice in wonderland and gumball and co.

This series was so deeply hidden in the recesses of my mind. These books are such a gem. They’re genuinely funny and age appropriate without being infantilizing. I’m so sad gen alpha doesn’t have the same relationship with reading previous generations benefited from. I know there will always be kids that enjoy books but as a whole, gen alpha is far behind in terms of reading, writing, and comprehension and books like these are more of a rarity these days.

I never read the books growing up.. but, when the movie came out on Netflix I took it as gospel. Thing is though.. maybe having Jamie Kellie as a role model wasn't the best. Especially with my at the time completely undiagnosed mental issues. I did pick up some healthy things from her, like being more true to myself, but goodness that did not outweigh the horrible habits I picked up. I was also discovering my sexuality at the time and my autistic ass tried to do the "boy-ology" thing from the movie, and decide which amab peer of mine would be best for romancing. My mom either saw this or I explained my "genuis" to her proudly (probably the latter), and she explained to me how objectifying and shitty it was. I was embarassed and ended up crying and asked her to not tell any of the men in the household. Next has to be the "all pretty people are evil" thing.. instead of finding a healthy way to explore and cope with feelings of envy and jealousy, I decided they were all evil, just like how Jamie and Isabella thought about Angeline. And.. well I think most people are pretty, I didn't really judge based on appearance before watching this and deciding Jamie was who I wanted to be. The one girl I chose though was plastered in acne, had almost brown blonde hair (possibly dyed, some kids were doing thst at the time I never noticed or cared though), and teeth just a bit straighter than my own. I don't know why I chose her to be my angeline but it was weird. I wasn't like.. actually mean or weird to her for the most part. I just was aware that I was "lower in the heirarchy" compared to her (which also wasn't true.. it was such a small town there wasn't any hierarchy, popularity was really just being extroverted and including others tbh). I also shared a bus with her. One day, me and my brother were singing on the bus together and just before her usual stop I was like "okay the popular girl is about to get on. She's super pretty and super cool so let's stop singing so we don't annoy her." And when I noticed she didn't get on I looked around confused and then I made eye contact with her in the seat directly next to ours. We said nothing to each other. The movie also weirdly convinced me I hated meatloaf even though my mom makes probably the best meatloaf I've ever had.. Again, I doubt many other people picked up her bad behaviors to my extent, but for me it was pretty substantial.. and at the time, I was also watching things like LPS popular too and that one yumsoda/sodapets mlp one. My mother also gave me puberty books from her and my sister's generations which skewed my view of what middle school was even more with how outdated they were. Was embarrassing to say the least, but God were those songs poppin.

A cousin once removed is the child of your cousin, so if my cousin A has a baby B, baby B is my cousin once removed. If B has a kid later, little C, that's my cousin twice removed

this video is such a treat to me. every time i see someone reference DDD i always say "i can smell this video" bc the distinct smell the books had always made me feel nostalgic. + when i used to want to learn how to draw, i would put papers over the visuals of angeline and trace the art and try to replicate the shiny hair shading the visuals have. the book series started my love for all diary series books, wimpy kid, dork diaries.. and the vampire one but not the cool one, its the lame one that goes into detail ab how AB blood types are the sweetest or wtv

I read these "Dear Dumb Diary" books a lot as a kid. Although I wasn't a girl, there was something so intriguing to me about DOAWK-esque books that were told through the perspective of a teen girl.

I was recently wondering where I read in a book about a character that kept ditching their kittens because they weren’t as cute like a few days ago and chalked it up to be Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I totally forgot these books existed! Thanks for answering my brain question.

Saw your video paused it and immediately went to go rewatch the movie as I realized I hadn't seen it in years. Like you I'm also 18 so I personally didn't the books and at one point didnt even know DDD was based off of anything simply because it came out and gained a reader base before i could even walk. Plus in middle school i was more a dork diaries gal, anyway. But it was just so cool to not only see how well the DDD musical held up over the years being extraordinarily funny and having GREAT songs but how it also used so much of the source material. Going through the video it was so crazy to hear the exact quotes and references over the span of the first 10 books that made it to the movie in a way that felt completly organic truly a love letter to books and its fanbase. Props to Big Jim that guy really is amazing.

GOD. these books were SOOO important to me as a 8-12 year old, like absolutely influential to me and my best friend trying to be popular in late elementary/first year of middle school LMAO. and yes. before you ask. we were gay and didnt have words for it lol. the obsessions with “popular girls”, always scheming to be near them 💀 vividly remember each year planning our double bday party (aug 20 and 28, aka our combo party was the last weekend before school started) and basically doing chess to figure out how to get the pretty girls (“to” “become” “popular” “ourselves”) to go (hint: we were children and anyone we invited would go LMFAO)

i'm pretty sure my brain blended this series and dork diaries together because this video is how i found out that they were not the same series! i only read one or two books from each series, so it kind of makes sense that it happened. simultaneously remembering some of the details from the first dear dumb diary book SO clearly while also being confused because i was sure the main character had a different last name because of a whole plotline about her father running a bug extermination company with the family last name on it and the popular girl making fun of her for it gave me some serious whiplash though lol

ooaahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my older cousin had these books and i read all of them that she had, i think 4 of these, when i was..11? 12? and have never been able to remember the name of the books or never had a talk about it with anyone thinking maybe it was a shared psychosis. im so so happy to find this video thank you so so much!!!! i didn't know there was a movie but it probably never even got dubbed in my language anyway hehe. oh i loved these books i was replicating the style jamie was writing in, i was copying the art style and everything aiagshwhhhh. in my early 20s watched the video with great intensity kicking my feet and giggling. thank you. the stickers on your face was such a cute touch btw lol so in theme of the book :^)
