one quick thing bc The Magicians is also my obsession: Julia basically sacrifices herself for Katie so that Reynard doesn't get her too. like Katie is cowering under the altar thing after he fucks shit up and Julia is like 'GO!!!'. the survivors guilt makes Katie relapse. truly insane nuance for a SyFy show lmfao

The Q and Eliot story (you know the episode) Was a beautiful thing, I don't know why I think that, I just loved it, don't come for me. There was more chemistry there than he ever had with Alice.

My favorite fact is that Jason Ralph (Quentin) is married to Rachel Brosnahan (Midge Maisel) which makes his role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel even funnier to me

You know you've kinda inspired me to make my own wild recap of my fav show Sense8 by the Wachowski sisters who made the matrix. I normally just review sci-fi and fantasy books but I'm gonna branch out and do a recap!

@@Speaken.Spoken Actually, given what you said near the end about loving the character dynamics, you should def watch Sense8 too. It's technically about our main characters dealing with this villainous guy working for a secret government organization thats hunting down Sensates (mutants), but the show really isn't about that at all honestly, it's way more about the dynamics of these 8 people around the world who are suddenly telepathic and can communicate mentally and ever share their skills with the 8 ppl in their cluster, and they have to deal with that and figure out what's going on. The relationships are EVERYTHING. The finale makes me sob every time lol

I'm partway through the 3rd book right now, having watched the series first, and it's honestly surprising what made it into the show and how. Like even some of the unhinged stuff from the later seasons has basis in the books, even if in totally different ways. Like the whale plot/time loop episode. There's a very brief passage in the third book talking about whales being spellcasters and performing magic to keep down something in the abyss that wants to rise.

10:35 I had to skip to here, because the out-of-focus was giving me a headache. Which really sucks because the beginning of the video is informative but I just could not look at the screen without getting a minor headache with my eyes trying to focus the blurry-ness. Great video, watched the rest while I worked. Dropped the show a while back and was looking for a lengthy recap of Season 1 so I could get caught up.

Watching this reminded me how much i was gaĝged by the first season. I knew i already loved this show but this just really brought everything to the surface again and im gonna go rewatch. I consistently pray for the day this show gets picked up by the react community at large just so we can get more content for this show. Ugh i will be watching this series

Fundamentally disagree. Alice is not an nlog she's a traumatized teenager with distant parents. They make it very clear why she is the way she is. Not saying that makes her all the time pleasant but it's not some you have to make excuses for some people are just kind of prickly.

I was a fan of Quentin & Alice in my first watch, but when I joined the fandom and started reading fics I saw other pairings that I enjoyed more. Then it the later seasons the writers started pushing other couples more and that was sorta the final nail in the coffin.

OMG, thank you for this video. Fantastic job!!! I love those type of content, and I have been looking for it in the magicians universe, but there’s hardly anything. I have a complicated relationship with a show, but I do love certain parts of it (more than the seasons than this one lol) and I LOVE ELIOT AND MARGO. I AGREE WITH YOU IN SO MANY WAYS - KADY IS AWESOME, ALICE IS EFFING ANNOYING. I absolutely love that as soon as I click on this video the first thing that I hear is you screaming about Alice and quinton. Not only did I watch the show but I also read the books and throughout it all I was like I hate these two together Quinton clearly hates her. I actually named my child after Alice and if she ever comes home with a Quentin so help me God I would like to add, that our child is named Alice after the Alice in magicians, but she is not our favorite character. We actually had a few characters written down for names that we would choose and Alice just seemed to fit the best

I would like to comment that I did not actually finish The Magicians book series, I made it about a little over halfway through the first book and I closed it told my husband that I absolutely hated the character of Quentin Coldwater I never wanted to see him again and I was scrubbing the book series from my mind

Honestly I couldn’t get through any of the episodes after they killed the beast. He was clearly meant to play a much bigger role with how connected he was to the rest of the cast, but apparently not I guess. You know he’s just everyone’s origin story, no big deal.

The Beast is killed at the end of the first book. So, the TV show doesn’t really deviate from the source material much in that way. But also in the books, the Beast is WAY scarier, in part because I is his lore significance is less telegraphed & he remains a pure eldritch horror until the final battle with him

Just a quick thing. Near the end you said that Eliot isn’t even a bit Bi but pretty sure in season 2 he says he does enjoy sex with women it’s just he prefers men. There’s also a scene where he tries to set up a harem that has mostly men but a couple ladies too.

It's interesting how much people dislike Quentin right away. I think he's more likeable at the start, and gets worse as things go on, not the other way around. Julia is awful, on purpose, and her and Quentin share that main character spotlight so it's kind of rough. I genuinely think they lean way too heavy into the "drug user" aspect of magic for her, and it makes it feel unreasonable that everyone isn't just a magic junky. In my mind it would have made so much more sense to delve into the idea of knowing magic exists in your world, being able to touch it, but being denied, which I think we could all connect with. Instead that's only really done through dialog and exposition to make it seem reasonable that she's a full on junky. She then causes all of her own problems, every step of the way, and plays the victim card from then on out, idk, not my thing. Liking Penny is honestly unhinged to me. He's such an annoying bully, pissing on everyone, but most especially Quentin, the whole time, and he doesn't at ALL come off as "down to earth. Kind of nuts to hear you gloat about him. Genuinely think people just like the actor (which I also don't fully get?), because the character is nearly insufferable until we get Penny-23, and even then, after all he's gone though, his bullying and inflated ego still bleeds through for no reason, and they force the Julia relationship really making me tune out. Maybe the Quentin hate also fuels people, because I don't hate Quentin, so it stands out how horrible Penny is to Quentin for absolutely NO reason. It's gross to watch, and it makes the nasty shit he does later all that much more worse. He's not a good person, at all. His redemption in the library is 99.99% off screen, and unearned. In fact, on rewatching the entire show for the first time since it came out, no longer having that fun entertaining want for what's to come next, the unknown, the worldbuilding, etc, I was mostly just left to analyze the characters, and they're all kind of fucking awful. Penny and Julia really take the cake with their ways, but no one else comes off as a good person, or really in it to help anyone but themselves. I remember thinking Margot was more okay, but on rewatching it's like she wants to ruin EVERYTHING for EVERYONE once they're in charge. It's like she thinks she's playing a video game instead of in charge of peoples lives, while Eliot is actually trying to "ovary up" for the first time in his life. I think Eliot is probably the most reasonable of them as time goes on, but it takes a lot to get him there, and he still doesn't fully learn, even by the end of the show. Just a side thing, but I do think Alice and Quentin work just fine together. I think the people playing the role look a bit strange together, but the characters mesh well. Eliot only works later, and way too many people forget that Quentin is not an out bi/queer/gay man, and that aspect of him is only just forming through his dealings with Eliot. Shipping them early is silly. Shipping them later comes with IMMENSE baggage that Eliot purposely shuts down. Again I think people just hate Alice, so they don't want to see it, but it works outside of that just fine. She's nasty though so, yeah...
