Here we have a rather unlikely put likely comparison between the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 and the Norton Commando 961. Both of these machines are true retro modern classic motorbikes. But they are very different in price. The Royal Enfield Costs only £6599 whilst the Norton is £16999! However the Norton is made in England and the RE in India.
Production costs are much higher in the uk so that certainly accounts for a lot of the value, but in this video I establish whether there is really that much in it and is it worth the extra cash?

@@AuxesisHyperbole666 I believe the engineers who revised the Norton were in fact British as I believe the work was done at Nortons new factory in Solihull. For the record, I have been told by several Norton dealers that the engines were all OK, it was some of the ancillaries that let the early engines down, so one of the jobs Norton had to do was find better suppliers.

@@shree397 Morning. To be fair Shree I don’t think most people here feel that at all (England). We all know the RE bikes are very much an Indian success story, we have nowt to do with it. Norton and BSA for that matter are riding on the back of that success. The difference IMHO is that Norton has a really bad reputation for reliability and build quality which was earned here, in England thanks to Garner and all that went with it. KZbinrs have interests and want clicks and views, so take what they say with a pinch of salt. Nortons are assembled here, that’s all. Whether they are any good only time will tell. You tell me, are TVS known for quality products? The TVS brand means nothing here.

if i owned that house, i would buy the norton to sit alongside my other 6 bikes i would probably own and probably put 1000 miles on it in 3 years. Because I don't , i would buy the Enfield, service it myself, ride on shitty roads and put loads of miles on it and then enjoy fixing it when things fall off. The latter sounds more fun to me.
@tpelle2

I was wondering about the house myself. It looks very much like the old manor house that Stuart Garner - the guy who resurrected Norton - purchased and restored to use as a "headquarters" for Norton (As well as becoming a luxurious home for him and his wife. Oh! Lets not forget the expensive cars which this scheme funded.). The issue is that, to do so, he used funding that he swindled out of Parliament which was intended to be applied to getting production underway. He also sweet-talked a British public retirement fund to invest in his scheme. Eventually, besides selling the company to TVS (To keep his hide out of prison, you see?), he sold a second 750cc V4 engine design to ZongShen in China, which engine was intended to be used in a future Norton Atlas. The Chinese are basing several engines for new Chinabikes on the Norton engine even as we speak.

My 2019 Interceptor has changed dramatically with the DNA air filter and the Hitchcock's supplied Enfield Precision mufflers - sounds are hugely improved - loud burbles at low speeds and raughty and powerful under acceleration. As a surprise, the fuel economy has really improved with less throttle opening for the same load. Less gear changes as well. Totally changed the character of the bike!

In a way, it’s sort of an apples to oranges comparison. The fellow who buys a modern Norton would be the type who has a Morgan in his garage. Too boutique for most. It would be more common to see a Thruxton on the road, but even then, I don’t think the Enfield would be a fair comparison. Many RE owners spend plenty of cha-ching on upgrading to improve handling and performance. Not at all a bad thing. An affordable platform that can be improved as the wallet allows.

I went with the Enfield in the end - it's a bucket load of fun, has a properly nice engine, and at nearly half the price just seemed too much of a bargain to turn down. But I guess the kind of customer purchasing a Norton won't be too concerned about the "value for money" aspect.

I'd rather say that the production quality would remain the same, Be it in the UK or India. The only difference would be is the 'production cost'. The theme of these bikes cannot be tampered with cuz it would destroy the whole purpose of selling the modernized retros. Indian companies like Mahindra, TVS, Bajaj, Royal Enfield are aware of that.

I remember in the late 1980s when I was a very young motorcyclist. "Born again bikers", that is to say relatively affluent middle aged bikers who had been off two wheels for decades, got bad press. In actual fact they put money into motorcycle dealers when my age group was getting into XR3is and Peugeot 205GTis. They went some way to keep motorcycling ticking over in Britain until it became fashionable again. My point is that Royal Enfield is bringing new buyers into motorcycling. They're shifting shedloads of units. These people are buying bikes, accessories and riding gear. The Norton, as lovely as it is, is not the machine to do this.

gotta admit, that norton is gorgeous. cant wait for them to release a version to the market that doesn't have the gold forks. but completely agree with you, the differences in the Norton and GT are not because the GT is bad, its just because the Norton has very high quality. Does it necessarily warrant the humongous price tag on the Norton? Nope, Continental Gt all day of the week for me. However I will say again, the styling on that Norton; the tank, the seat shape, the paint work lines, and the engine itself are fucking beautiful. Which has just made me think, if you made the GT's tank have the same shape as the Norton, then you'd literally just have a more affordable Norton.

For me, the Norton's looks are a cut above and obviously, so is the performance. But that price! I'm not exactly what you'd call poor, but the Norton just doesn't cut it as "good value", to me. If it was 30, 40 or even 50% more expensive than the Royal Enfield then it would be hard to walk past. But they're not. It would be great to see you compare a stock Interceptor/GT650 with a customised one. The great value in the RE's is just how much more character, noise and appeal you can squeeze out of them with the aftermarket accessories available. I own a 2023 Interceptor 650 with S&S cannons, DNA filter and some aesthetic modifications and it really does transform the bike. I'm not saying it gets close to the Norton, but it would certainly make for a much tougher decision regardless of money.

Interesting review, good work Darcy, obviously the Norton has top line components, stoppers, shocks, all adds cost., plus rarity, interesting to note there is a big bore upgrade for the RE, that takes it up to 70hp, costs about £6-8k, now that would be interesting 🤔 Thruxton RS then a level up on Norton performance wise but cheaper

In India noise restriction is at 80 db or so, so to get compliance in India, all Indian bikes create less sound. After market louder , free flow silencers are available but none are road legal, in other countries may not have that much strict pollution standards.

Enfield has a BSA look to the engine. Norton looks like a cafe some guy built in his shop. I’ll take both.

I’m from Redditch where Royal Enfield started before moving to India so I will always have a strange loyalty to RE. Although the Norton factory is just down the road. I am now conflicted.

The old Twins from RE could have used a revamp on a par with the bikes they have released over the last 18 Months. They lag the touch point quality/luxury of their peers. Look at the seat, it looks sparse, grips thinner… can use a brake upgrade, but the power is adequate. No one really needs much more power.

This was a fun review! Thank you!! I think that, if money was no object, I would probably buy a vintage Norton instead. I just love them. The new one is beautiful, but I don't think I saw a kickstart? I think they are both beautiful bikes and I like aspects of each differently, looks wise. Is the Norton Taller/heavier?

Love the Norton but like the BSA it has no heritage and I wouldn’t pay the extra for the badge and performance. Royal Enfield are great value and you can’t really compare the two bikes. Horses for courses. If it’s all about performance then you should buy Japanese ZXR,CB,GTXR!😊. Another great real world review.

I like the Norton BUT the RE just meets my uses more. Cost is a major factor, for the price of the Norton I could buy 2 or 3 different RE's giving me greater options in riding, especially for me in Wales. The Norton looks like it borrows from the Triumph Thunderbird triple (an underrated bike, in my humble opinion) with relation to the lines, which makes me think of the late 90's retros whilst the Continental does has a closer resemblance to the 70's and early 80's bikes (thinking of bikes like the XS750) and nostalgia of my own childhood plays a part in that I suppose lol. When it comes to lines/design that is always going to be subjective 🤷‍♂️ Watching you ride its obvious you're having great fun with the Norton, even if it was a dreary day for it 😅, which is awesome. With the oil cooler is there a way that can be rotated 90⁰ to fit in between the front frame or would that interfere with gubbins behind it? Just a thought as with its current set up it does look like it's just been thrown on as a necessary afterthought looking out of place 🤔 Can't wait for the factory tour 🔥🤘😎👍🔥

As an Indian I don't like continental quality. They compromised a lot. That's why I like Freddie because he expose everything from the bike sir.Norton is much more quality.Continental is not cheap too but cheap breaks and color quality is cheap.
