In this video I rode the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, a modern Classic retro motorbike made and owned in India to Silverstone race circuit to put it head to head against the Moto Guzzi V7 Specifically the V7 Stone Special Edition!
The Moto guzzi in particular is a bit more expensive than the RE, but there are other Guzzi V7 models that are more comparable in price to the continental.
I discuss many things in my comparison like value for money, handling, acceleration, power and torque, performance, stopping power of the brakes and much more! And a sound test between both of the exhausts!

You can't ignore the price tag on either of these bikes and a budget is a budget. But the shaft drive on the Guzzi, the ease of maintenance, a bit more go and a bit more comfort make this the clear winner on a good few fronts. But Brexit Pesos aren't easy to come by and that is impossible to ignore when looking at the Royal Enfield. That is a lot of bike for the buck. And let's be honest, for a lot of riders, it's all the bike they'll ever need. I want the Guzzi, but if Santa leaves me the Royal Enfield in my stocking next Christmas, mum and dad aren't going to have to worry too much about me having a tantrum and storming off to my room in tears.

Every single time I settled on a cheaper car / bike I had always wish I saved and spent more to get what I really wanted. Now that is a first world problem through and through but my thinking is if you have means to save that extra $3,000 eventually (and you can get a barely used Guzzi for $6,000 btw), save that money and buy the bike you want. Patience pays off in the market.

I agree, being over 70 I’m done settling because something is cheaper. I will wait until I can get the one I really want, that being said, I think the Enfield is beautiful, but if I can only have one it’s an easy pick for the Guzzi.

Tough choice! I would not mind either one of them. I think I also would go for the V7 special though, providing the price tag didn't matter. If the choice stood between the Guzzi and the Shotgun 650, I am not equally sure...

@@cowmath77 My late father used to regularly state: "The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten". He was also pretty good at hunting down a bargain. A low miler that someone else has ridden off the lot would be my choice. It pays to be patient when making significant purchases. Desperate sellers have a way of finding patient buyers. I spent months looking for my last bike. Eventually a bargain came up.

The Royal Enfield is a true cafe racer. But if you want to go a little further and a little far from the neighborhood, I would go for the Moto Guzzi. It invites you to do a little longer ride mileage; I would say that the range is superior too, if I’m not mistaken, and in top of that, you have space for a pillion. The V7 is the choice here, for me. 👌🏻

I agree, my V7 Special Edition would be great with twin clocks. I've no idea why they didn't include them. This is the only negative I for this model ...except getting into neutral - sometimes ok, others takes many attempts! I've added GIVI, engine bars, tail rack, Oxford grips and centre stand

Over the last 55years I've had a wide variety of machines including: Honda CB500F, Suzuki GT750 2-stroke, Burgman 400, BMW RT80, V-Strom 1000, Suzuki Intruder 1400 and a Suzuki C90 Bagger. Now I have a V7 stone and I'm stunned at what a fine motorcycle it is. The seat is so comfortable, it steers and handles so beautifully, It's such a pleasure to ride on the open road or in the mountain twisties. It fits my six-four perfectly and no more chain BS. How could this bike be such a secret? It is by far my new favourite.

I'd say the Interceptor would be a better bike to compare with the V7, purely because of the riding position. Having said that the V7 is a full 200cc more, so the higher bhp and torque is a given. Great place to film, and good luck reaching a well-deserved 100k!

I got the GT in Rocker Red and 2 hr rides are not torturers. Plus there are 2 dealers within 40 miles. The Guzzi just doesn't look as retro as the GT. I've put the bar ends end solo seat on mine- making it look more retro. Also I've added the S W Motech small Legend panniers and magnetic tank bag. Denali lights on the engine guards improve visability while still being under 9 K. If I had more $$ and garage space I'd definitely have both. LOL . By the way, I'm going on 71 and loving the riding position of the GT. 👍👍5🏍🙋‍♂️

The Guzzi you tested here is a special edition, but they've kept the prices of the core Stone and Special models pretty much the same since introducing them in 2021 (the Stone's gone up £200, the Special is exactly the same price) which makes them better value now than when launched. There are often deals to be had on new V7s too, especially at the end of the season. I've put 4000 miles on my V7 Stone Centenario and love it, to the point where I picked up a Mandello S in the Centenario colours two weeks ago. While still having the Guzzi vibe, the V100's a different beast altogether!

The RE 650 is one modern classic I haven't ridden or owned. Some Context owned and ridden (all of them for over a year and over 5,000km) 2015 Triumph Bonneville 865 "true parallel twin" (360 crank), 2016 Triumph Truxton again 865, 2020 Kawasaki w800 Cafe and now a 2022 Moto Guzzi v7 special. The Guzzi is the best by far it has a soul like the w800, the comfort of the Bonneville, performance like the two triumphs, handles better than all of them and a shaft drive!!! Also much better gearbox ratios. Interesting enough the Guzzi frame is an evolution of a tonti frame a vintage racing frame and the RE frame is made by Harris performance.

I have owned a Norton Commando and a Ducati Darmah as my daily driver, for ten years each through the 70s 80s 90s and noughties. Loved them both, and the Darmah brought that magic beat, but if I were to resurrect only one today, it would be my old Commando Interstate 850 black with gold pin and Dunstall rearsets. She owns my soul. Hence of these two, the RE speaks to me more of the fundamental draw of classic motorcycling: you look, you ride, you look again, you just can't take your eyes off her. You dream, you remember. Rinse and repeat.

Great comparison video! When choosing between the Continental GT and Interceptor...I went with the latter as it just fit me better. With tank pads my knees can grip the tank properly which then unloads the arms completely by using my legs and core rather than depending on the arms as the GT pretty much forces you to. I DO like how the GT looks...but riding the Interceptor it's no contest. Also comparing an 850 to a 650 puts the smaller bike at a disadvantage so a 'hot-rodded' Interceptor more of a match which is pretty easy to do with the aftermarket cams, pipes and tuners available to do the job. A good 650 will approach 60 horses at the rear wheel and also shed some pounds from the exhaust system and should be at least a match for the Guzzi. I also have always found the Guzzi approach to motorcycles very appealing...but also enjoy tinkering and modding and for me....the Interceptor is the better bike. But....if someone gave me a Guzzi I'd certainly take it in and love it just the same.

Nice review. I have a '22 Conti GT, and absolutely love it. I actually test-rode V7 before buying the Conti, and side-rocking is a show-stopper for me. I get why people like it, it definitely has a ton of character, just not my type of character! I have done several 300+ mile rides on my Conti, and with the premium touring seat it has been great. Growing up on sport bikes and having decent core strength helps for sure with keeping weight off of the bars. Changed tires to BT46s, and it handles great stock. For anywhere near US $6K, I can't think of anything even close. Also, stuff like mirrors, exhausts, etc. are probably the first thing people change. I wouldn't choose one or the other based on the stock parts.

While I have a Triumph Speed Twin 1200, 2023 model, I seriously looked at the Moto Guzzi V7 stone in the silver and green paint scheme and my word wasn't it close to being my garage joy, but I just wanted that little bit of extra power underneath me. Great comparison though, I don't think there are 2 "modern retro" bikes out there that are as evenly matched as these two nostalgia machines. Love your vids Darcy and I'm looking forward to seeing a bike comparison in the future where both you and the old man fight it out with your opinions on a pair of similarly matched machines.

This was a great comparison...Overall, it seems like the Moto Guzzi V7 Stone SE is the clear winner for you, but I always go with my all-time favorite bike RE GT 650. Thanks for the informative video bro

We pay a premium for Moto Guzzi in Australia (over 10,000 pounds for V7 Special models) but I was lucky enough to find a used one in great condition. I also have a RE Classic. Nothing beats the Guzzi on start up but Royal Enfield also gives you much to smile about too. I’ll add one of the reasons I subscribe is because you review bike exhaust notes properly! I’m surprised by how many reviewers that fail to include this. Cheers from 🇦🇺

Great review and conparison. I love the look of the continental but own an interceptor for comfort and rideability. It would be a much tougher choice too. If the Guzzi had the looks of the Enfield, a used one would be my choice as the price would be similar. 👍

For the continental GT quad lock problem, it's quickly fixed by buying a cross shaped sticky mount. Cheap, reliable and really really quick fix to put your phone on ! :) Also it looks way better than the mirror idea in the video.. very flush

I discovered that the front forks and rear shocks took almost 3000 miles to properly bed in on my 2019 Continental GT and become supple. Handling was much improved. At the start both front and back but especially front felt harsh and particularly crude. I wonder how many riders have upgraded these components before letting the miles kind of macerate them?

Also, that riding stance is "sitting up prone" rather than the proper clip on and rear set of a traditional Cafe Racer, which is a particularly uncomfortable and tiring seating position.

@@simoncaddick9085 I agree. The position is Cafe Racer Lite. I'm 55 with a lower back injury and I've done two hour runs on my Conti without discomfort. The only time I get a problem with it is within the first mile from cold because my hips twinge. Nothing else, just my hips but after a mile they're warm and stretched and I don't get any issues at all.

Spot on with your conclusions Darcy.. I’d choose the V7 Special over either of these purely on looks, power and sound.. both of these have small compromises to finish and price that would niggle after 6 months ownership.. not so the V7 Special..

Great video! Thank you! I had cross-shopped the Bonneville, Guzzi and RE. I picked up the Guzzi, same model as in the video, and love it. I think the Guzzi has a better build quality than the RE. Love everything about it. Also picked up a T120 as well a bit later and that is yet another level up from the Guzzi for more power and even better build. Happy with my choices.

They are pretty much the two bikes I looked (although it was the standard V7 stone). At the time I couldn't stretch to the Moto Guzzi, so went for the Continental. I've fitted aftermarket end pipes (Powerage) and a DNA air filter, bar risers (CooperB bikes) amongst other things, so it sounds much better, is more comfy on the wrists and I'm not disappointed. I would still consider the V7 for a next bike finances allowing (however I can't see happening any time soon ...or later for that matter =¬).

The 850 engine was a really critical upgrade for the V7. The 750 of the previous generation had no more performance than the Enfield 650 (and yes, I have ridden both...) which made it a really hard sell at something like 80% higher price (at least here in Australia). It also didn't handle as well as the Enfield 650s. Combined with the fact that the "better build quality" that Moto Guzzi people used to justify the price difference over the RE 650s was like the Easter bunny (ie: doesn't exist) it just didn't stack up. Sit on one and tell me the gauges, switchgear etc are better than the RE. In fact the latest generation of RE switchgear makes the Guzzi stuff feel like a toy that came out of a kids Happy Meal. Don't get me wrong, I like the V7 and understand that items like the shaft drive etc cost more to build, but I think having more oomph is a selling point that the V7 desperately needed. I'd honestly like to own a Guzzi next, and may end up doing so, I just think their new pricing is a bit out of touch, and is probably reflected in their sales figures.

I likes these bikes a lot but as with all the nakeds and retros....I just wish these beautiful bikes were bigger. They are all quite small, from the RE to the Z650RS to the Guzzi V7 and even the Bonneville, wish they had a bit more size and higher seat height would be nice too. I like a retro touring bike or retro adventure. Like a Guzzi V85TT.

Guzzi v7 850 special edition! I have one alongside my 2020 T120. Apart from childhood dreams of a Guzzi, shaft drive, tubeless tyres, etc.... it's a winner. I've done 450km days, but that's enough on the Guzzi. The T120, I can do +650km days and not too bad afterwards! (...Corbin seat!). Overall the T120 is a great bike. The Guzzi is, as you say, for the character... which comes in bucketfulls! It makes all sorts of noises , whines, clicks, rattles... dry clutch... if it was one my previous Hondas I would be concerned 😟.... apparently all this is normal. After the "break in" period the bike seems to get better the more miles you put on it! Now at 5k km. The T120 has 43k km ...and going strong as well - new chains, tubed tyres.... PITA to check valves etc. So far, the Guzzi has been easy to maintain. FYI - I'm in NW British Columbia and the nearest "dealership" is about 1500km away. I have always done my own maintenance. The only bike that almost "defeated" me, was my Africa Twin! I called it my origami bike.... access needed so much work to do the simplest things.... Then again it was a Honda, so maybe I shouldn't have tried to poke around inside. Apologies, I know this isn't a "Forum"... just giving some feedback PS I'm a subscriber and enjoy your chit-chat comparisons. Perhaps you could add a little more "ride out countryside" on the bikes as folks like to see where you are??

I love the V7 but down here in NZ, it's 50% more $$ for the Stone and you could probably stick an 865 kit on the Conti for that money. They get a bit more comparable on the used market though, if you're prepared to go with a V7 II 750.

V7's do exist in the uk I am fortunate enough to own a 2023 Guzzi v7 Stone (Lichfield staffs) - and can confirm it is truly a wonderful motorcycle. There is nothing else on the market anywhere near like a guzzi - They are in a category of their own - Quirky - yes! - Perfect no!. but constantly puts a smile on my face (but to be fair so does my enfield 500 C5 classic. Wasn't sure about the speedo at first (always liked twin dials) but guess what its actually pretty good and now love it!. I would argue that a comparison with the interceptor would be a better due to the higher bars etc. And which would I pick - well I one of them already and i have ridden the enfield 650's a lot and would confidently state that either would be an excellent buy and in the real world both have enough usable power to satisfy most riders needs! - I am actually planning to get either the interceptor or meteor 650 to keep my bikes company (or may even go for the Himalayan).
