This absolutely rocked every test! I am not sure why they have it listed as '4WD' when it's 240V and pulls 2000W+, but if you have a pretty solid inverter then it should hold up. Comes with a neat carry bag too!
If I could make some improvements, it would just be a bigger induction coil, more rubber feet, and maybe more staged coils for efficiency or a more controlled cook. Who wants to make one with me?

Absolutely wild how quickly this tech has progressed. Only in the past few years have I seen these become even remotely common in peoples homes and there are already pretty stout portable units. Great work with the video!

Hey Jenny that's awesome! Any steel or copper pots work well, even aluminium ones that have steel cladding usually do too. My go-to are the Kmart ones of all things. The 32cm non-stick range is amazing and have been my daily cookware for years now. I've got a video about it somewhere on here!

just some info for you. you'll find most induction cookers and certainly the cheaper ones most definitely. They are pulse width modulated when typically under that 1000W range. what that means is they will pull full power whilst cycling on. often people think they can buy one and run it at 800w and run it on a 1000w inverter. it doesnt work like that. they still need an inverter that will handle the full rated power. With regards the rating of 2000W. you will find its the same as microwaves or anything other cooking product. they rate them on 'cooking' power not the power required to run them. so a 2000W induction cooktop on microwave for example might take anything up to 2400w to run. the sticker on the back will tell you the input power. if it was only just over the 2000W on AC, it was unlikely to be cooking at 2000W. Like you though, ive seen others not even get close to that. Have a look at this one to see what I mean about the difference in how they operate and what Ive been looking for kzbin.info/www/bejne/fou1Y3Rmd82amas hope all that helps . good luck on the utube journey

Yeah mate you certainly ain't wrong; I've got about a dozen now, although I have returned 2-3 REALLY bad ones, but I've found that SOME of them will seemingly have 2 coils laid within each other, so can be small coil, big coil, or both, so you'll see consistent heating and consistent power draw at certain modes such as 800W, 1200W and 2000W, but that was only one or two. Those are usually in the $99-$129 mark. I have had one or two where you can set wattage or temperature though, eg they have a thermistor in there, and they work quite well for sensitive cooking, and the fan doesn't run for as long either! Ideally if both technologies can be combined that'd be awesome. And yeah funnily enough a viewer named Andrea told me about the Tokit ones the other day, and I just ordered that same one as you - the higher end model - and cannot wait to get it! Thanks for the input, much appreciated - and I'll watch a few of your videos this weekend. Seems like solid content

@@platima it was a subscriber that told me about this video. so i came for a look. the tokit is actually a rebranded Xiaomi it seems and Ive found one of theirs that seems to use the same controller etc but in a different format. so gonna see if I can track that down. i use mine in the 4wd. so still looking for the perfect one. the tokit is great the way it works but difficult to permanently mount in a vehicle. the other one may be better .

@@DENMONKEY Oooh neat find - I'd be super curious if you do find a Xiaomi one. Could you not make 2x hinged L-shaped arms that attach to something in the fourbie like side of storage, and then take the screws out the bottom of the induction cooker and put them back in _through_ the arms, and finally just have something it clips into at the top? I cannot draw for shit but I am sure you get the idea haha, like it flips down from a vertical resting position.

for offroaders / vanlife also test if lower settings are really lower settings or duty cycle controlled high setting. (400w = 400w or 800w with 50% cycle)?
@PlatimaTinkers
@PlatimaTinkers Ай бұрын
All portable induction cookers I've ever tested are PWM / duty cycle. It's inherent to how induction cooking works really. That being said, 50% of 800W for 10 minutes is the same as 100% of 400W for 10 minutes as far as battery/solar consumption is concerned.

Yeah thought about it, but I don't have a huge use case for it really. I stick to the TP-Link Kasa as it's quite accurate and quick, where as the new Tapo ones take ages to update and seem to have a larger margin of error. The best I've got is the Athom ones, however, the UI is harder to show on-screen. Maybe one day. Thanks for your suggestion anyway!

What perfect timing for me, I just went to Anaconda for new thermals thinking thats all i need BUT the dune induction cooker was spotted on my way out so grabbed 1 to try at home for my camp trips away. I have to say This dune cooker is fantastic, what a time saver. I tried different pots and learn an interesting fact, some of my pots are not compatable with the EO code, so my question is, of the mentioned steel - copper - aluminium pots, is there a preference if weight is no issue and if so is the difference minimal as in time to cook or is the difference quite energy draining when offgrid (1 run 2 x 135's with a 2000 inverter and i travel solo but as a safety factor i always take my Honda 1000w generator just incase i am stuck for a few days without sunshine.
@platima
@platima 13 күн бұрын
Hey super glad to hear - and I agree, quite easy to use and a good price! Aluminium pots aren't compatible, unless they are steel/copper clad. If no weight issue, I'd say cast iron is the way to go! Else anything with a thick base. I really like the K-mart ones. I've got videos on both cast iron and the Kmart 32cm pan on this channel. For me, it's about the right cook, and induction offers portability and fast heating without the need for gas, but it does have the drawbacks of ~2000W of consumption and the on/off cycles for temperature control. That last bit is what the thick bases work around. Note cast iron does require a bit of maintenance, but also the $17 cast iron pan from Kmart in the cooking section does me wonders - better than my $150 one! I hope that helps 😊

I just bought this cooker, and I was hoping I could find a video that explains the modes… the instructions aren’t clear, but I suspect the modes are smarter than at first glance. Any advice??
@platima
@platima Ай бұрын
Hey yeah nah (to use the Aussie phrase) - modes aren't smart at all. Well, not really. Basically induction cookers just control their 'temperature' by turning on and off periodically, hence it's always best to use a pot or pan with a thick base. The modes on this just seem to be what the manufacturers felt was the best setting to cook that, eg: steak up high, chicken thoroughly, milk slowly, etc. I do not recall if those modes also have a timer though? I just bought another induction cooker to test from Aldi too 😅 But yeah the Dune is one of my daily go-to's now!
@samanthamclaren2572
@samanthamclaren2572 Ай бұрын
In your video, BBQ mode temp setting seems to hold temp better than the lowest mode on Fry and HotPot… and milk seems to heat more slowly… not sure how. It does have timer. The modes on the right (water, milk, soup) are timer based… you can’t change the temp or power. Hotpot and Fry are power based, but BBQ is temp based. It’s odd, I reckon.
@platima
@platima Ай бұрын
@@samanthamclaren2572 It is definitely odd, but having a look at mine here it does appear that the different modes also consume different power on average, so I'd assume it's still using the same PWM method. Could be worth testing them out with some milk and meat 😋

Is there a way to change the DEFAULT wattage of 1200WATT to a lower setting in HOT POT mode....ideally would like to start at 300WATT and adjust it up to 800WATTS or so....cheers from Melbourne
@platima
@platima 4 ай бұрын
Hey mate nah unfortunately not really. The way most of these portable induction cookers work is that they alternate their on/off frequencies to keep the desired temperature. Thus, it's usually just best to use something with a thick base / thermal mass. I do have one more I am testing tomorrow though, and another I am ordering now which apparently are much better! So far this Dune is top of the wozza though for me in the sub-$100 (affordable) range

Thanks for your reviews! I'm very frustrated trying to find a portable induction that can simmer properly at low heat without the on/off boil that my Ikea one does. After looking at the choice reviews (which recommend the Ikea one at low heat?), your reviews have been much more helpful. Would you say this model can maintain a low simmer at all? It looked like a medium simmer worked in your video but I'm looking for a more gentle simmer speed. Maybe not possible with portables?
@platima
@platima 6 ай бұрын
Hey Andrea you're very welcome! Unfortunately none of the portable ones I've tried (and I've tried a lot) have a low-heat simmer - they will all on/off due to how induction cooking works. Eg without multiple smaller coils, there is no real way to control the temperature, it's either heating the metal or it isn't. I would recommend this one either way though, as it's one of the best I've tried. Else for a simmer you likely want something more like www.bunnings.com.au/todo-1500w-portable-electric-cooktop-hotplate-stainless-steel_p0316373. Aka non-induction, but still portable and electric. Tempting to go buy one and make a video on it actually hah.

Had a play with my Dune unit today ....checked the current drawn via my FLUKE true RMS Clamp meter... When you set the "WATT'" to 300. ( HOT POT setting,...the current goes from virtually 0Amp to about 5.4 Amp on off cycling ( like PWM ) short on long off....]] When set to 2000WATTS it is on with about 8AMPS and off 0 Amp briefly...cycling..... This would be pushing a battery setup with fairly large currents...not liking that all... The description of adjustable of from 300W to 2000Watt is very misleading to a person that does not understand this sort of stufff....My Honda EU20I generator would need to be put into FULL ON not eco control as the cycling would make it run full on and full off on any setting ...Be careful people...this unit works well ...boils water rapidly in a good saucepan and does eggs and bacon in. a decent cast iron pan very nicely at low settings....but still the current burst on the 12V side are very high ..5A AC 240 means about 100AMP 12VDC. ( Ration 20;1) cheers from Melbourne
