Few months ago I started watching video about minimalism and frugality. I declutter all my stuff that I am not using and don't like to use. Today, if I want to buy something I think of it many times and I make sure that I take out something before buying that stuff to prevent me from hoarding stuff again.

I am in my 60’s now& I am in the process of decluttering, it’s so lovely to see young people understanding now that “ stuff” does not bring happiness, sooner or later who have to get rid of it, so don’t start , my daughter understands this now. I really don’t want anything except my health& mental well being& also for my family& friends. My wish is for peace in the world, but yes dream on 🙏 You are so right in what you say, marketing is very clever at getting you. Thank you Ana, lovely video ❤🙏

Hello, Ana! Another great video! When I stopped working in the corporate world due to a stroke, I quit buying things because I learned that they don't matter. I was too busy learning to walk again, to write again, to think again. And it doesn't matter what you wear when you use a walker to move down the road. People still look at you as if you're a leper, if they notice you at all. I think the feeling of being invisible was the worst for me. But I focused on what I could do, and day by day, I improved. I still try to look decent, but I really don't care whether or not I have/wear/own the latest whatever. You give me hope and help me to see that I'm not alone or invisible.

I sometimes think that people who get very adventure or experience focused can also get addicted to the next big trip, the next place to check off on their list, etc. E.g., I don't know that that is necessarily a good alternative. It can be another side of the same coin of using travel as a form of trying to outdo/out perform others. I just have noticed that - it can be another way of escaping being present. I don't think it's true for everyone, just saying that I have heard that kind of attitude about it.

Let me share here a quotation that I came across recently and did help me in my minimalism and mindfulness journey (always on my way) : Enough is a decision, not an amount. I hope it may interest or inspire someone else too 🙏

your story about the green dress is very relatable. I often envision my self with long hair, but every time it starts to get longer, I feel so uncomfortable, so when I finally cut it short its such a good liberating feeling, like I'm more my true self. Wanting to be someone else is stupid but human I guess🤪😊❤

When I was at school, my friends' parents would buy them presents every time they got good grades. My parents never did that, they congratulated me of course, but they said it was my duty to have good grades. If anything, we would go to have dinner somewhere to celebrate it. I value so much this teaching now I am an adult... We don't need anything material to reward ourselves, the achieving in itself is a treasure 🌻

Thank you so much for sharing these thoughts and experiences. I’m also a senior and think I have more than I need. I need to do more decluttering and only keep what gives me joy and is most benefifial for me here and now. And most of all; collecting moments before material things! 😍

Thanks for this video. I needed this, as I try to spend less and stop filling my home with items that are not needed or meaningful. Shopping to feed one’s fantasy is so true. I often get sucked into these, because I want to feel a certain way, but of course because one cannot buy a feeling, it hardly ever works. Often I feel stressed or sad as I have less money left and accumulated more things that clutters my home when in fact what I need more is space. Watching your video adds to my growing suspicion that it is high time to start a different life strategy.

I usually wear clothes until they're too tired to pass on to someone else, but they aren't worn out enough to re-purpose or throw away. A dilemma. Lately, I'm giving myself permission to pass on a few things that I'm tired of (understandably since I've owned them for years) and that feels good although it's an ongoing struggle, too. On the other hand, I have a skirt I've owned since sometime in the 90's and I still love it and it still looks fresh! That's a good feeling. I totally relate to buying or keeping things that the fantasy life may require. :-) I'm doing less of that, now. Thanks for this video!

Shopping is an addiction. It is very difficult to break. We can have the best of intentions to break from it, but like all addiction, it's difficult to walk away. Thank you for opening the door for many to take a look inside each of us and reflect on the place we really are. Are we buying for the real me or the fantasy me? Great question! 👍🏼

Buying stuff mindlessly for myself and other people I discovered was shallow and lazy and not satisfying. Instead I value spending time with people talking and discovering new things. I take time actively not spending money and enjoy the simplicity of life in the slow lane. Now I make edible presents or knit or sew presents I know are useful instead of buying something that just collects dust. Shopping no longer thrills me I would rather read a book or go for a walk ❤

Hello Ana. When I was younger I used to buy more things. I needed some of them, but sometimes I bought it in order to feel happier, but as I got older I realized it actually didn't make me happy. What makes me happy and content is to invest in experiences such as travels (of course I still buy things, which I need and like). And being content or happy comes from within. But each to their own. If buying a lot makes people happy, why not. Thank you for this video. Take care 🙏

In my 20's, I use to clothes shop for fun, but nowdays (in my 30's) I don't think of it that way, now its just for the functional purpose it was designed for. Now I despise logos, I like blank shirts now, too tacky looking with brands names on everything.

I have a frugal nature I think and only acquire things out of necessity or if they have meaning to me, for example, artworks. There have been exceptions though. I went through a period of intense grieving when I also lost weight, and I felt compelled to buy a lot of new clothes because they fitted and looked good and at the time I could afford them. But mainly it was in an attempt to fill the void. Seems strange to me now but I really felt that I wasn't myself at the time, or maybe didn't want to be.

Grieving does quite unexpected things to us, indeed. I'm still learning to accept the loss in a good and mindful way. But I can relate so much to your filling the void experience. Sending much love, dear Jude ❤️

I so feel for you in this. I'm grieving the recent death of my beloved cousin, who felt like my twin, and i went on a big spending spree this summer. I felt so ashamed afterwards til i realised that i now had a stock of lovely presents for my family and friends for birthdays and Christmas. Your comment about not feeling yourself or wanting to be is so perceptive....i definitely do fantasy self/nostalgia shopping when im sad. I hope you are feeling better in yourself now. 💖

I am learning everyday. I buy clothing that I think will work, when in fact it makes me feel frumpy and uncomfortable. I just cleaned out my closet and removed about 20 items, what a good feeling. At this time, I’m really struggling with books. I love to read, collect, and shelve books. I own many, but I always hear about one that I want to read that I don’t own. Soooo, I buy it/them. I know, I really do know, that there are billions of books and I cannot own them all. (Even though I’m trying to own them all 🥺). I don’t know how to stop. I’ve tried. I tell myself that I will never catch up with reading what I have if I don’t stop. Do you have any ideas on how to curb your buying of things you love? I know you sew and crochet and create beautiful things, how do you say “No” to the next thing? You have probably said how you do it many times before, but I need a trick to trigger my “stop” button. 😂

Readers, love books,,we like the cover, fall in love with it we love the words inside, the story. Readers collect if affordable. I,don't know what the stop button is to stop collecting books, books are a prize collection for readers. I think I stopped collecting books when I saw many books were less expensive off the internet, and easier for my eyes to read. Both had me, I read from a tablet.

I'm a lifelong reader and book lover, but I have only two shelves on one bookshelf that is full of books. I get all my books from the library, and I only buy the ones that are my absolute favorites, or books I use for reference like field guides or cookbooks. If I bought and kept every book I read my house would be a giant pile of books and I would be broke! Keeping only the ones I truly love makes my bookshelf feel like a group of old friends I can turn to whenever I need them- a very comforting feeling.

I have the same problem .I tried using the library but I live in a very small town and the book I want they don’t have.If they can find it and order it for me it takes weeks to get and then I have to rush through the book because you can only have it for two weeks.what I have done is set a budget for books and I don’t go over that amount

The most immediate answer that comes to my mind is "Allow yourself to buy more of what makes you feel really happy and really YOU"! For me, crafting is a way to cope with life and stress, that's why I've decided not to punish myself for having some extra of what is important for my mental wellbeing 😊If the oncoming return to a nomad lifestyle was not a real thing, I would stock even more yarn wothout hesitation. Hi Ana, This is going to sound a bit weird. As I listen to you, I think about what I have done in similar situations. I am discovering things about myself that I didn't know I was doing or maybe never thought about. I subconsciously purchase what I need, not what I might want. If a purchase is on both the need and want list, that is what I call a bonus purchase! I buy quality every time; I have few clothing items, but they last forever. Hmmm, this lady must be doing it right! LOL! Thank you, dear Ana, xoxo's Sandie🤗

Sorry, but I don't get the dress story. So you bought a beautiful green dress, wore it several times, and ONLY THEN happened to see what you looked like in it? After which, you realized you hated how you looked in the dress and parted ways with it? I get that sometimes, our tastes change, or we may get tired of an item we previously liked, but why not just say so instead of turning it into a story about marketing and fantasy selves? Also our bodies can change/fluctuate over time and so do our moods. If I got rid of every clothing item where on a particular day I suddenly thought that I didn't look good in it, I wouldn't have anything left to wear 😄
