There seemed to be a lot of turmoil regarding the early direction for Anakin's hair in Star Wars Revenge of The Sith. Hayden Christensen seemed worried George Lucas would go with a prettier hair style for Anakin that Hayden wasn't comfortable with. Luckily we got the better hairstyle for the final product in RoTS!

Hayden was a lot more vocal about the direction of the character in ROTS, which is probably why the performance was so much better. He was probably star struck and just thankful for role in episode 2. By this movie, he IS Anakin Skywalker and probably felt like he should voice his opinion a lot more. Like in this scene when he straight up tells George Lucas that he essentially does not like the hair.

@Commenter The style we saw in the clip, maybe. But could they have explored more styles to find one that fits Anakin? Absolutely, but long hair does not equal pretty, its the way you style it. Look at Qui-Gon Jinn for example, he has long hair, yet they found a style that works for him. I'm glad they found a style that works for Anakin, but they were dead set on scrapping it and cutting it just because it looked too pretty. They could've explored many different styles before they cut it. This doesn't just apply to Anakin, it can also apply to any other character. I find the idea of exploring different styles to be a great way to improve on how you design characters. If anyone explores and experiments with different design choices it will help them in the long run and make them a better character designer. Its like sketching, it isn't final and you can revert and start over if you'd like, but it helps in giving you experience and makes the design process way easier for future designs.

I just looked up some pictures on the mention of Mark Hamill in this video... just to see what his hair looked like throughout the series. Some pictures of SW VIII came up... I think the staff, hairdressers, MUAs and literally EVERYONE on set actually cared about their job. Does not mean that the people who pull the strings and give the story and the lines to actors will care.... and you can look at the result. This. If they gave him a ponytail, it would appear like he still puts effort. Same if his hair was too long or too short... Or that mohawk style. It looks highmaintenance. But with mid length, uneven messy hair, they conveyed that anakin isn't concerned with trimming or doing anything with his hair (as long as it isnt too long it obstructs his view)
