Analog, Digital, & VoIP phones

a quick and simple explanation for new telecom techs, IT managers or office administrators.
The three different technologies are all being used simultaneously in the business environment today . And, to a lesser extend, in the residential environment as well.
The problem comes in when people start trying to solve problems by mixing the different phone types. This has the potential to damage the equipment.

Nice video. certain Digital hybrid systems can be used with both Digital and Analog phones altogether. and IPBAX is also available for use with analog phones in aid of an analog expansion unit with a license. there is the latest technology used instead of IPPABX called cloud-based "SIP" Phones capable of Video and voice calls. It only needs user-end devices and the internet to work.

not really. you can connect VoIP phone lines to a digital phone system. For example you can have VoIP lines from an ATA that connect to line 1, Line 2, Line 3 etc on the PBX. Then any digital phone on that PBX can make calls via those VoIP lines.

Is there a converter to convert an IP phone to analogue? the reason I ask I have an FTTN service that uses VOIP for the phone service, but the router my provider supplied has a built in ATA and they will not provide SIP information as its pre programmed into the router. but I wish to use a VOIP phone

Yes there are such devices. they are called “Analog Terminal Adapters”. Popular name brands are Cisco, Obihai , and Audiocodes. shouldn’t be too hard to find. But, they do require some setup.

So a NORTEL T7208 can't be plugged into a standard POTS Jack with service from the central office and program the speed dials from the settings?

that's correct Max, almost all of the proprietary business phones (Nortel, Avaya, Samsung, Tie, Nisuko, Shoretel) can only be used with on a business phone system. Plugging them in at home won't even get you dialtone. Good question. :D

I own a VVX 201 and hooked it up direct to my modem and use passthru for my PC. No router. (ISP speed is under 100Mbps so no speed bottleneck). Are there any bad aspects of not using a router? Phone functions fine 90% of the time. Once in a while drops a call or cuts out. Can I implement QoS packet priortization using the QoS settings in the phone's Web Config Utility? Or will this have no effect since I have no router? Thanks!

I get similar questions like this often. so you are not alone in your quest. unfortunately, phones like that are designed to only work when attached to a business phone system (aka PBX). :-)

Only you can use it in a Panasonic Digital hybrid system like KXTD 308, KXTD816, KXTD1232, KXTD336 or KXTD500

you can connect analogue phones to VoIP through an ATA adapter (if its analogue to VoIP) Cisco SPA112 Analogue Phone Adapter is a good choice. phones.skybridgedomains.com

There’s this really cool cellphone I found from the 90s the seller said that the phone can be charge but due to the age battery hardly holds any charge and he said this phone will not work in today’s digital age. My question is can I somehow some way able to use this phone in the present day? I typed on google and they mentioned something like VoIP? But it seems to be referring to landline phones. Also, is the battery replaceable? Is there a guy I can go to? There’s always a guy. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like your biggest challenge will be finding a replacement battery (ebay would be my first place to look). As for the VoIP, not sure. You can take old smart phones (android and apple) and install voip software on them. They can then work as wifi phones even if they aren’t connected to a cell ph plan. But a phone from the 1990’s? Not thinking that would work. Even the earliest smartphones didn’t start showing up until like 2003. Good luck with your quest. 😃

A lot of this is wrong. If you're dealing with a Panasonic hybrid PBX the Panasonic phones use two twisted pairs on one RJ11 jack Also a analog phone that's plugged into a Panasonic system will work.

yes, I agree Avaya Partner and the Pana KXT series does allow that hybrid TDM, analog co-existence. But, I don't think the audience for this video wants to split hairs that far. Thanks for commenting . :-)

that's a tricky question Rimpy. Depends on where the digital line is coming from. For instance if the digital line was from a Nortel phone system, then you would use what is known as an "ATA" or "Analog terminal Adapter". Most of the major phone system manufactures make ATA's for their phone systems so that user can add cordless phones, fax machines or postal meters. Like I said, it's tricky question. Good luck. :)
