A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
I got an SH-101. Yes, it's simple. But I love its particular sound and find it endlessly deep and soothing. Thinking of it that way made me think to pair it with the Subsequent 37, another synth that provokes exactly the same feeling. Turns out the two make a good team.
Roland SH-101 into Source Audio Ventris - Bass / melody synth sequence
Moog Subsequent 37 into Walrus Sloër - Lead synth
Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.
Thanks for listening.

It strikes me what an amazing ambassador you are for these hardware instruments. The manufacturers should consider themselves very lucky that such a skilled composer and creator as yourself keeps bringing these videos into existence. One has to search far and wide to find better product show casing! Especially enjoyed listening to the Slöer in this one!

I like how the jam stayed melodically consistent throughout the whole time even when there was a transposition of the sh-101 bass line!

Simply beautiful Jay! 🤩 I was really captivated throughout all the track thanks to your wonderful and nostalgic melodies, variations etc. (By the way, I didn't know the SH-101 was able to record such a long sequence actually 😊)

I found your videos for the first time last night. I stayed up to the wee hours of the morning just in awe at your creations. Jay, honestly, you have such a gift. You make it look so easy. Oh I just got this and just did this and that, then magic. I'm just beginning, at the very start. I've played with some plugins and bought an Arturia key lab 61 mkii. It all seems so overwhelming. I've done some reading on synthesis in the last month, filters, envelopes, modulation. But experimenting it all seems so very fragmented. I can hear the magic especially in your videos. I play piano and have a Nord stage 3, but would like to have a hardware synth to really learn on and make something happen. Watching your videos, the Moog subsequent 37 would be the one. The patches you create and modulate are so awesome. I can't believe your talent and creativity. Then I watched your video on the Electron Octatrak mkii. That instrument, device seems so incredible. But I can't even wrap my head around what it is. I watched someone else's video on it, and still really didn't get it. Then with all the other devices plugged into it. It seems as if you are some kind of magician performing magic. I know this all doesn't come over night. But it's baffling to even know where to begin. I then watched all your favorite gear for 2023. Crazy how you can do so much with so many complicated devices. I'm not trying to put you on a pedestal, but just am blown away at your technical expertise and then with artistic creativity create these masterpieces of sound! When I get the subsequent 37, is there any books, courses, ideas, on how I can have as a guide to explore this amazing instrument? When I was 17, I went to my first concert. It was 1976 and I saw the Jan Hammer group with Jeff Beck at guitar. It was absolutely amazing. I fell in love with the sound of synthesizers. It was the era of Keith Emerson and elf. Pink Floyd, Tony Banks and Genesis. I went to see them all. But never thought about doing it myself. I'm retired now but don't believe age is an issue for me. I've done all sorts of cool things as an engineer, I build racing quads and fly freestyle acrobatics, build things out of wood etc.... I'm not afraid to learn and explore. I think I found your videos at exactly the right time. I have been so inspired. From hearing simple oscillator tones in plugins and experimenting a little with modulation, envelopes. Then I hear your work and go wow! If you have never heard Jan Hammer with Jeff beck, I'd like to share a song written in the early days. The KZbin search: Jeff Beck. Darkness Earth in Search of a Sun. I just loved it when I heard it live. Never had heard anything like it before. It was a whole different era. The Moog mini, arp 2600, and a few others were the big thing of that time. Now with modern technology and evolution, there are so many different types of electronics instruments as you have so wonderfully demonstrated. I know I'll Neve have your knowledge, but you have given me inspiration to get started and start creating. thank you for that. Any input would be greatly appreciated! I am going to join your patreon. Not just some guy going through presets of a device. You are truly a creative genius! thank you, Paul

Thanks so much, Paul. I have a few videos on the Octatrack on my Patreon, taking it from scratch; I might do something public one day going from very basics. But in terms of learning, just let your interests dictate where you go! Sounds like you're very into analog synthesizers, and I hear you on that (they're my favourite, too). The Subsequent 37 is a great synth for learning, since it has a "panel" button that matches all the knobs/buttons to the output, providing a what-you-see-is-what-you-get relationship between the panel and your sound. I might one day run an absolute basics on synthesis as well on my Patreon, or maybe here (though less likely here). If you get the Subsequent 37, I strongly recommend just sitting down in panel mode with the SS37 and its very very good manual and learning the basics. All the best, and thanks again!

Lovely to see these two paired, I think this sounds great and they really do compliment each other well - nice work. I think I would have liked this to be slightly longer to allow a slower development of the sounds, especially on the 101 - felt a bit rushed in places for me.

Yeah, most transposition on synths is not diatonic, so you need to choose a modal switch that makes sense (but probably falls outside the original key). It might have been seamless if I'd stuck to roots, thirds, and fifths, but the other notes give it away.

Hi Jay. I'm a long time fan and currently studying Electronic Music Production. As part of a project we are supposed to find out our musical influences and who in turn influenced them on their journey. As you are on my list and I couldn't find much information online, I wanted to ask you if you remember an artist or multiple artists who inspired you early on in your music? Thank you so much and keep up your amazing videos!
