A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
I'm lucky enough to have access to a new studio space, and am now in the process of moving over there. That means the days and nights have been long. One evening I was casually noodling on the Take 5 and came up with a patch and arpeggio I liked, but didn't feel I had time and capacity to do a full sequence and arrangement with other devices.
That's where the Midicake ARP comes in to save the day. Rather than sequence anything, I simply sent my MIDI data out of the Take 5 and into the ARP. The ARP then recontextualized the notes and can send them out to up to four other devices (here, I used three, plus MIDI clock to the DrumBrute Impact). Thanks to the ARP, I could explore chords and improvisation without having to write a single note in a sequencer. The ARP really is a great solution to a classic songwriting problem: being able to find the song with all the parts at once, rather than imagine all the parts and then write them.
From there, it was a matter of laying down some instruments and effects I liked the sound of. No surprises here, other than the Boss DM-101, which I got recently. It doesn't quite have the personality of the Matriarch delay, but it's a great and more versatile analog delay that I look forward to using more.
All in all, a really fun jam, and I was extremely grateful to have the tools I needed to write the song on the fly across multiple instruments.
Thanks for listening.
Sequential Take 5 - main arpeggio, MIDI controller/data out
Midicake ARP - "sequencer" (note recontextualizer? arpeggiator?)
Arturia DrumBrute Impact - drums
Dreadbox Nymphes through Strymon BigSky - arpeggio two
Blackout Model D through Boss DM-101 - bass synth
Roland SH-101 through Walrus Sloër - arpeggio three (the slow high one)
Kenton Pro-Solo Mk3 - MIDI to CV for SH-101
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI through to all devices
Performed and recorded live, with eq, compression, and limiting in the box.

Upon this relisten, it really strikes me how GIGANTIC the Black Model D sounds , its giving the TAURUS a fair fight..... And its simply pure genius how you let the 101 contrapunctuate the rythm ... Just beautiful !

I'm so divided , it Will be The Matriarch or the Take 5 ...i can't afford both , and since I GOT the, Granny and the new update just doubled the memory of the Take 5 .... It's getting more and more difficult NOT to go for the Take 5 , When both Jay and Jorb....and Matt Jamiroqwai Johnson , strongly recommend the Take 5 😅

@@MikkelGrumBovin If you have the Grandmother, the Take 5 would be a really great pairing and add something sonically you don't already have! I currently have a couple Sequential synths and would love a Moog to pair, have only heard great things about the Grandmother. But seriously, the Take 5 is absolutely as good as people say. I play mine almost every single day.

@@JayHosking do you think it’s a better live performance drum machine than the Roland TR-6s / 8s? I was thinking about swapping my TR-6S out for the DB impact or the Erica Synth LXR-02
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 10 ай бұрын
@@SethWeisfeld I liked the sounds of the TR-8s but it ultimately wasn't for me; the menu system wasn't ideal for me, and the performance stuff wasn't frontloaded. I actually enjoyed playing with its predecessor, the TR-8, more because it had the scatter stuff more upfront. Never tried the 6s, but I have friends who say great things about it. If anything, I might just pick up a TR-8 one of these days, or hope for Roland to add a TR that has more performance stuff (like the DrumBrute Impact's smart randomizer and roller bar) on the front of it

How does the MIDIcake ARP (which I've been considering) compare to the Conductive Labs NDLR (which I already own)? What are the similarities, differences and where does it improve on it (I'm thinking one area is in the re-sequencing of MIDI note input data?)? Oh ... and I liked the track too! PS What's with the blacked out Behringer, unmentioned by name?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 10 ай бұрын
This could be a very long answer, and I'm afraid I don't have capacity for that at the moment. The short version is: the NDLR more or less locks you into a scale, whereas the ARP can play whatever notes you tell it; the NDLR has easy controls to create colour chords (6ths, 7ths, etc.) to any note, whereas the ARP requires you to set those chords for specific notes; the ARP allows for input of notes and spits out sequences, and as far as I know, the NDLR doesn't. They are doing similar things, and both are great. I'm playing a lot these days with scale/key/mode changes so the ARP is currently a great fit for me. And thanks!

hi jay, question: how do you think the midicake compares to the NDLR, and which do you prefer?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 8 ай бұрын
I'm working in and out of scales these days, so the Midicake Arp is more for me, being able to feed it whatever notes you want. However, the NDLR is a little faster off the ground, and I'm sure many people would prefer that all the chords it spits out just work for the key.

@JayHosking
@JayHosking 8 ай бұрын
The Arp doesn't constrain you to a scale, so you can musically a little weirder and more interesting. Moreover, you can play notes into the Arp and it just sorts out the arrangement for your synths. But the two devices definitely overlap in roles.

@JayHosking
@JayHosking 10 ай бұрын
Hey! This one actually didn't take long at all, since I sort of wrote it on the spot with the Take 5, and let the ARP sort out the output (with my guidance) to the other synths. From there, it was dialling in the right sounds.
