Analog thinking in a Digital age - Monochrom photography by Eddy van Wessel
Photojournalist and documentary photographer Eddy van Wessel has traveled many times to conflict areas to record the lives of the people and refugees. He has worked in Bosnia, Gaza, Chechnya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. His work has been rewarded with many awards. Last year he was the 2nd photographer to win the prestigious ‘Zilveren Camera’ for the third time, this time for his series on the last IS-stronghold in Baghuz, Syria.
Eddy van Wessel has worked for years with the Leica M9M Monochrom camera, and made the upgrade to the Leica M10 Monochrom when it came out.
He will also give you an insight into his workflow, and how he applies analog thinking to his work in a digital age.

This was absolutely superb! It's so refreshing to see and learn from actual working professional photographers rather than all the bull shit KZbin photographers that my feed gets littered with everyday! Thank you so much for this!!!! I have already spent hours on his website!

I watched this video ages ago, and for the last few months have been looking and looking for it. I’m glad I finally found it. Eddy’s photographs are incredible and anyone could learn a lot from his work, as well as the man himself.

This video deserves a lot more views... there is something incredibly humble about Eddy. You can tell he has seen things most of us will not be able to cope with. His work is absolutely amazing and I think a lot of people can learn from the things he is saying in this video. Thank you for posting this.

I agree, probably low viewing figures because it doesn't contain naked images or designer merchandise and you have to have at least an average IQ to watch it.

I agree this video should be a compulsory watch. The universal damage caused by war is clearly made by his photographs and his almost mournful matter of fact narrative. He has seen so much tragedy yet he tells you what he has seen without judgement.

Eddy's work, sacrifice, and endangering himself make him a true hero. Covering any part of a conflict is always unpredictable. As far as Leica cameras I could never justify the cost of owning one. I like the small factor of Leicas, however nowadays other camera manufacturers have designed small and powerful cameras which offer amazing optics and film-like simulations, and this is what I use to document events. The high ISO output is even better than most Leica cameras. The gap between Leicas and other brands is narrowing and I wonder what Leica will come out with next to stay in the competition. Would I like to own a Leica Monochom? Yes of course, but still cannot I justify the price.

Your digital camera may be as small and may have perfect image quality but it works most differently and that is the topic not the ISO performance. Leica surely depends on people who can afford the luxury appeal and can pay the premium, but there sure is just no possible way to sell at comparable prices with Sony, Nikon, Canon etc. Leica wouldn't exist if everybody preferred ISO performance over handling. Leica has a niche, even their digital RF cameras still have highly complex mechanical mechanisms and they produce in a high wage country. Leica even repaired my 80yr old IIIb camera. Leica always stayed true to photography and still does. This is unique and is not for free. I can't bring anything up against them.

i was looking into television noise and the cosmic background radiation and thinking how life in front of us is like a tv show being projected by the big bang and your noisy black and white pictures look to me like images forming in television static as if the scenes in front of you were being organized out of the cosmic background radiation or as if you were watching television static and these images started to appear.. specifically 7:15 but theyre happening in real life which is basically like the same thing.

1:58 isn’t the Turkish army. It’s the US Military. And latter on in the video you said “Americans arresting civilians” they are not civilians. They were terrorists who killed civilians. Your photos are great but you view is warped. You push a false narrative to play on the ignorance of those who view your work.

Why does this Leica show looks like done by an amateur ? The photoos cover less than 30 % of the screen; much too small. Compare this to the gear used in Vietnam; some photographers had three cameras: a Leica M and two Nikon F. Optics 28 mm, 105 and 200 mm, plus Tri-X rated at 400 or 200 ASA.
