Alan's work is genuinely an inspiration, and makes me feel like I need to push myself harder as a creative (and Leica M10M + M10 owner). The "one camera, one lens" approach is something I talk a lot about with photographer friends: it's so important to internalize that sense of how your chosen focal length works, and to start "seeing" in a way that aligns with your gear. Bravo, and thanks for another interesting talk!

I use Leica-M film cameras. My M3 in my use 55 years! I love the compactness, the feel and the vision. I finally bought an early DSLR. I hate the bulk!. I seldom use it! TG it was real inexpensive! I prefer the older lenses with 39mm Diam. My 50mm Collapsible Summicron, 35mm Summaron and 135mm Tele Elmar which is an APO, even if not stated! A tiny kit for doing anything and anywhere! Usually one lens only. Sometimes an extra roll. Love Schaller's work. The high contrast, depth and sharpness. Love the "look". It's music! It flows! Bravo Alan.

I don’t study other people’s work or try to emulate anyone . Maybe that keeps me behind the curve of trends or whatever. With that being said this is one mans work that moves me . It makes me desire an m10 monochrome more than ever . I really like the images from my Nikon d850 and would love a monochrome d850 . The only thing is it’s a touch heavy and grip a touch large . I prefer the d500 with a grip and love a camera with a good grip like Nikon DSLRs. I’d love a good gripped mirrorless rangefinder style camera with a large rear flip up or down LCD for blind folks like me . Thanks for this video loved it .

Nothing wrong with presets. I use them in many ways for many reasons. Sure, if your preset transforms a photo beyond reality than people may complain, but is an artist not entitled to their own interpretation and ideas? I doubt that there is one photographer including Alan who doesn’t use a preset to some degree. The monochromatic camera does not make super contrasty images OOC. He would be using a preset to knock the contrast up on his photos. I am a Leica owner and don’t see the need to excessive purity.

I may have misunderstood Alan, I thought he said that he shoots mostly in aperture priority with a minimum shutter speed of 1/250. How does he get his camera set to this ?
@g33k33014 жыл бұрын
You can set the minimum shutter speed in the settings. So, the camera will use at least 1/250 at automatic shutter speed and will change the ISO value to the maximum value you've set in the settings when on Auto ISO. If you have reached the maximum ISO value it will slow down the shutter speed.
@BankFodder4 жыл бұрын
@@g33k3301 You can set maximium - but where can you set minimum?
@g33k33014 жыл бұрын
BankFodder The maximum shutter speed is telling you, that the camera tries to shoot at least at your given shutter speed or above. So, if lightning is bad it will still trying to shoot at 1/250 by any means. If it‘s getting worse, it will bump up the ISO. So, the maximum shutter speed is the minimum value the camera goes until it will increase the ISO. 🙂

@aantomop47954 жыл бұрын
24:01 I feel he is very wrong here. When you have the 35 and something happens on the other end of the street you don't take that picture. You focused on the range you have with the 35. Yes you can take it if you see it but if you're not focused on it because you work with the 35 you don't take it. It's not wrong to take that image it's just that Alan thinks eveyone will notice it which is not really the case.

One Camera, One Lens philosophy ….. nothing new! We, the old timers photographers practiced this back in the 1980s and early 90s - basically, we had no choice, we could only afford one lens (fixed focal length)! Owning a Leica with a lens was only in our dreams - unless you were a Consultant Surgeon or just filthy rich! It’s good to re-inventing the wheel, and make out it’s an original idea - since ‘sliced bread’! However …. excellent images!

The question on my mind is: will these images still be with us in the future? Like 50 years from now. It's all digital. Negatives from 1960 are 60 years old today. If they are well kept they are just as fresh as in 1960. That is not that long ago when it comes to photographs. How are we so sure we can see Alan's, or our own, images in 50+ years time? Computers change, formats change...the floppy disc is a disaster today. The inventors of certain tech died and knowledge get's lost. Many people already have lost some digital photos. A hard drive failing, an computer thrown out with images on it, a phone crashing etc.
@Mindartcreativity4 жыл бұрын
I shoot film and digital and love both mediums but nothing is forever not even negatives. How many people have lost negatives in a fire? For digital it‘s best to keep multiple copies across different hard drives and a copy on online servers. You can also print your photos and keep those in an archive room. We dont live in the early 2000‘s, we live in 2020, almost 2021.(nobody uses floppy disks anymore,...) Technology is so advanced and cheap that everyone who can afford a computer, a smartphone and a camera can definitely afford an external SSD drive. Archiving digital files takes a bit more work but it‘s still manageable if done correctly every year.
@aantomop47954 жыл бұрын
@@Mindartcreativity Thank you for your response. It is indeed a bit more work to keep the digtal files save, and I think we are willing to do that work, but maybe that's not the case for most people. A few decades ago when film was still used most people didn't care that much about preservation. They shot a roll, had it developed and let the company made prints. The prints were looked at and the negatives were kept in the envelope they came in. Probably in the same box the others were in. They didn't had to look after the negatives ever again only when they needed another print or a family member wanted an extra print. The so to say safekeeping was mostly done for them. Late 90's early 2000's you even had those deals were you got two prints for the price of one. The prints are perfect for preservation as are the negatives. The thing with digital is that the normal consumer tends to shoot even more. Images are not instant and don't need to be developed. The option of printing is not offered but needs to be requested, which is another hurdle to take. And why should they print? The image is directly send to a family member by phone or uploaded on social media with some added text or emoticons. They will never store their images on a external hard drive like was done for them in the films day's by dropping the negatives in the box with other negatives. Two preservation techniques that were already there when a consumer would let the company develop the film. I myself shoot digital and film. My archiving is good but even I find it difficult to archive the digital files well for preservation. The best way is to store the original a Tiff and jpeg file I guess of one image. Changing the name affects it and it is probably best to keep it simple and no spaces like: 20201014_01 2020 october 14th and the first image. Or you could lose the first two numbers of the year and just go with 20. Saving it to your external hard drive would be best. Not changing anything on that exteral hard drive and keep it for just adding images, no deleting. I feel that this works the best but maybe you have some extra advice regarding the digital work flow? Pardon for the long reply but I really appreciate your, or anyone's, thoughts on the subject
@aquilifergroup3 жыл бұрын
Print it out. Have a paper copy of the photo. Not all the photos You will have to be selective which ones to print. Just print out the worthy ones and archive the rest electronically. That’s my solution to the problem.
@TechnikMeister24 жыл бұрын
Take my advice. You can achieve the same results by shooting with one of Leica's lenses for the Panasonic M4/3 system such as the astounding Leica Lumix G Summilux 15mm f1.7 ASPH. Put this $550 lens on say a G85 and you have $6000 Leica performance for $1000. I kid you not. That lens is as good as anything Leica produces and can out resolve the sensor.

A sensor without a color array captures a much higher level of detail and shades of gray so duplicating the output of a Leica Monochrome camera would be very difficult. Plus shooting with a Leica is such an unique experience. That said an iPhone 11 Pro with its three primes and one's favorite editing apps could come close if your final output isn't print. Close but not the same.
@aantomop47954 жыл бұрын
@@thomasjames7644 I doubt not. It is just a matter of practice and keeping with it. The keepers are shown, the turds are not. I also feel he is very heavy on the editing. Much more respect to Bresson who had principles and was a true master of the craft. Letting the camera meter for you is a big thing. It works so differenyly when you meter with your eyes, when you ISO is set in your camera, when you focus manually and when sharpness is not unrealistic like many images today. These images really look like digital images. It's not the best of looks
@robertbosson52232 жыл бұрын
Schaller's single image work certainly exude the overdone 'hi-contrast flat geometric' and 'solo figure in negative space' clichéd tropes that one sees all over social media these days. Sorry folks but his 'style' is emotionally shallow and uninspiring low effort images imho and is the perfect example of today's elevation of mediocrity into revered art-form where anybody who picks up a Leica is an 'artiste' with unquestionable merit and an original voice.
