My grandmother has some slides from her wedding from 1964. I recently found a slide projector at an antique store for pretty cheap. After watching this I am definitely gonna go and get it. I love your channel.

Hi Noah. Thanks for sharing your insights. My son and I shoot slide film 35mm and recently invested in a carousel. We both mount our own slides using a manual loader. It is a lot of fun. Our Friday and Saturday nights with friends are much more engaging. Don’t forget make the popcorn. Thanks again for channel.

Last night, I was going through my slides from back when I started shooting street photography with them in 2005 in my mid thirties, and it's always an unequaled experience from that found with digital: you get to see details in them, such as whatever headlines in the newspaper someone is reading at a distance and so on - things that you just don't pay much attention to in the inherent hustle and bustle of digital. Also, it's great to see a young man like yourself being so passionate about a way to consume media that's slowly disappearing. You prove that bringing back such practices does not compete in any way with the current technology, but it complements it instead.

Brings back some fond memories of setting up large scale presentations with slide and movie projectors back in the day for trade shows. Also good memories of cleaning and servicing all the projection equipment as an A/V technician at a high school. I feel so old.

I see them at Goodwill from time to time. I think I will get one and give it a try. I remember my Dad used one in the 60’s and 70’s. When we went on vacation or if someone we knew went on vacation, it was always a big get together with friends to watch photo’s of different places. Maybe encyclopedias will come back next :)

I just got two for $45 at the antique store near me and they came with a whole tray of photos and both were donated from the local hospital. The photos are homes from the early 1900s. I haven’t been able to project them yet but just to have it in my possession is so cool to me right now

A couple of years ago the school where I work was clearing out an old store room, rang me and said they’d “found this thing and did I have any use for it...”. Kodak Carousel, in case, with manual. That was a yes then 😂😂

You can also project 6x7 with a Mamiya Procabin. Or if you want to get really crazy a Beseler Slide King takes even larger formats.

Went to a yard sale last weekend and a man was selling carousels with slides from his career as a travel writer. I picked up one from Israel 1974 and one from Russia/Ukraine 1992. Now on the lookout for a projector to pickup and this video was incredibly helpful!

Dwayne's Photo will mount any slide film you send to them to develop. I think you have to explicitly tell them not to if you don't want it mounted. It was neat as I sent a roll to them earlier this year and it came back as a little box of mounted slides.

I remember I hated the carousel projector my grandmother bought, because it replaced a simpler one that I liked. She was a travel agent and she’d take pictures on Kodachrome and Ektachrome when she traveled. When she came home, I was the grandkid who got to work the projector so everyone could see her new slides. Her old projector required you to place one slide in while viewing another, then move the slide tray to the other side, remove the slide you just saw, put a new slide in, move the tray back, then remove, replace, move, etc. To me, the Carousel took all the fun out of it, although obviously for grown-up users it was a big improvement.

I’m so glad to have discovered your channel. I have tons of slides that I shot in the 80’s & early 90’s. I haven’t seen them for 20 years now. Recently, while my sister was cleaning and clearing out our mother’s house, she dug out my old slides, and mom’s Vivitar projector and carousels. I’ve inherited them. What’s missing now is a screen. Mom still had one, but I have no place to set one up. (I live in a tiny apartment.) So like an idiot I turned it down. I suppose that what I need now is a way to convert slide to digital. But I’d still love to see them on a big screen. Even the sound of the projector would have a nostalgic appeal. The whir of the fan, and the ka-chunk of the feed mechanism. Anyway, thank you for your vid’s. I’ll be checking out more of them.

Would love to try 4x4 "Super Slides" someday. More image than a 135 slide, but you dont need to go all out and upgrade to a medium format projection system (as 4x4 will project on most Carousel projectors). 4x4 cameras like the Baby Rollei are a steal nowadays as well... Great video! Nice to see 110 transparencies get a nod!

I used to sell carousel slide projectors and bulbs at the mom & pop camera store that I managed from 1992-2013. It’s fun shooting slides and projecting them. I remember there being stories of people’s relatives going on vacation and boring their family and friends with long stories and slide shows. It would be fun to revive that dynamic…except for the boring bits. It would actually be fun to take a trip & only shoot slides & later have a gathering with friends.

Am seeing this a couple years after you posted it, Noah. Have been a subscriber for a while and just getting into your "back issues." I take medium format slides with a couple of Kodak Brownies, using 120 for 620. If anyone is looking for a less expensive projector for 6x6 look for an Ansco Dualet. Looks super cool, and projects both 6x6 and 35mm/Super Slide formats with a simple adapter that comes with it. Keep up the great work!

These are pretty cool and I never knew about them. I found a TON of boxes of slides and two projectors in my grandpa's closet. Tons of amazing material such as photos of the Mackinac Bridge construction in the 1950s and photos from Vietnam. I should probably make my own video on these since one of the projector's doesn't work and maybe I could repair it. Also the carousel was featured an episode of "The Fairly OddParents" in the episode "Inspection Detection" which I had never noticed before!

A couple more facts.. the bulbs have to be allowed to cool before you move the projector. The carousels were fairly cheap and as can be seen in the video usually came with lids, so people often kept presentations in the carousels to save time, and just stacked them to store.

I have a Kodak Moviedeck 455 Super 8 projector from the 1970s, and the more I think about it, the more I wonder if Kodak designed that line of projectors to basically be the Super 8 equivalent of the Carousels. It almost looks exactly like the Carousel, with the super 8 reel replacing the carousel on top... it certainly looks more like the Carousel than it does a normal Super 8 projector. Could make sense though with how popular the Carousels were (and how iconic they remain).

- white part of the frame always faces the light source (reason: to not absorb the heat of the lamp, heat is the biggest enemy of the color dyes) - you can buy devices (like tiny guillotines) to cut the frames (I have several, but realised I prefer scissors) - trick when you cut with scissors: look where you start your cut relative to the sprocket, than aim at the same part of the sprocket (middle of the sprocket; a bit to the left/right; left/right edge of the sprock; between them, etc.)

In North America, the carousel was very popular, when slides were used more in schools and similar environments. In Europe, it did exist, but there were more projectors compatible with the German DIN 108 standard. This uses a straight "comb" for slides. There is also the Paxomat, which takes only special frames made for this model. Other way around, they work with standard projectors. but standard frames won´t work in these projectors. Not a good thing if you bought Kodachrome in Europe, because it was available with processing included, and also with processing and framing included. The ban fot Kodak to do this was only for the USA.

The emulsion side toward screen rule does not apply in some (now increasingly rare) circumstances. In the increasingly rare case of rear projection (projector behind screen instead of in front of screen), you need to have the base side toward the screen. This is because you need to reverse horizontally. In this case you can remember it as emulsion is always forward. Also, about the accessories. The wireless remotes by the 1980s simply came with a transmitter and receiver that plugged into same remote socket as the wired remote. The stack loader is also uncommon, but I have one.

Inherited old slides & projector. Tried to view recently, but we could only get one carousel to work on projector. We have mostly kodak carousels, but a GAF projector. Is there a step we're missing to use the loaded carousels on the GAF projector? [So confused, because the tray/carousel that was on the projector was family photos, so it doesn't seem like we ended up with someone else's projector.]

Kodak's used to feature all-metal cases, but the nylon gears and levers inside would become brittle and break over time due to the bulb heat. Since they're no longer made and finding spare parts is tough and very hard to replace, when one breaks, it's time to visit eBay for another one. At least they're cheap. I got a nice one at a garage sale for $20.

Depends on the lens focal length and the lens-to-screen distances. Most projector manuals include a chart that will give you the correct distance to fill a given size screen with a lens of a given focal length - or zoom setting in the case of zoom lenses.

Upside down and with the dull emulsion side toward the screen. For Kodachrome slides it was really easy, assuming horizontal orientation: the Kodachrome name toward the screen and right side up. For vertical images, I'd rotate 90° in whichever direction.

From my understanding it works with any tape deck with recording input! You plug it into the projector and the tape deck at the same time and as you record and advance the film it will capture everything on a tape for playback. Then you play the tape with the cable still plugged in with the projector. I couldn't find a proper scan of the manual online, but I did find some information: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/fXEAAOSwijRdpcPA/s-l1600.jpg

If you want to get serious about it, there is a caslcilator at AVIXA: www.avixa.org/standards/discas-calculators/discas You will see there are quite a few things that enter into the calculation, not least of which is what type of images you will be projecting. Technical presentations, with fine text and graphs, or medical instruction imagery are far more demanding than just vacation pictures, but in all cases you should have at least an idea of brightness, room ambient light, viewing distances and angles. You will also want to give some consideration to screen types and surfaces, a subject as important as the projector itself which unfortunately was not covered in this video.

When I started into photography in the late 1950s, color negative film and prints just sucked. If you were into color, you were into slides. As a result, my first non-camera piece of expensive equipment was a slide projector (and I learned color printing on Cibachrome). As a teen, I haunted the Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962(?), where Kodak had a pavilion set up with eight Carousel projectors wired so that they would change slides by fading in and out. They could assemble one or more images out of 8 - 12 units, fade them into multiple images, etc, on a huge screen. It was one of the "biggies" at the Fair. Kodak offered two lines of projectors. The Ektagraphic (what he has here), which had decent to good lenses, and the Carousel models, which had crappy, Coke bottle lenses, really the worst in the industry. The projector lenses which tested best were made by Sawyers for their projectors, far superior to the Kodak lenses, whether fixed focal or zoom. Today, a top Sawyers in good shape runs about $50- 100. Ektagraphics run double that. IMO the best bang for the buck are the Rollei units: good design and build with superb lenses. In the 1980s, the crap status of the Kodak lenses generally was recognized by several independent lens makers making outstanding lenses to fit the Ektagraphic/Carouselmodels, but at prices which were truly nose-bleed, such as Buhl, Isco, and DO "Golden Navitar". Compared to the rest of the industry, these lenses are outstanding, but having no other use, they sell for peanuts today, if you can find them at all.

Did you ever dig into medium format projectors? Thanks

I'd love to at some point, but I haven't come across one locally anywhere which would be great. I'm also not shooting much 6x6 right now and that's what most of those projectors would handle

A Leitz Prado 66 is on its way to me. I'll let you know how it is if you want to hear. Gotta get film holders, got a recommended source to buy those?

@@gfshaffer1 I really wish I had a source on that, but even 35 slide mounts have become hard to source. The company Gepe was putting them out for 35 and 6x6 up until a couple years ago I believe so your best bet might be looking for boxes of Gepe mounts that people are selling on ebay or places like that.
