Great overview of the Kenner Six Million Dollar Man toy line. I am still impressed with the play features and quality that showed us Kenner toys motto "We Really Do Care." wasn't just words. These toys had value then and today are a testament to the toy designer of the past. I have a growing collection of these toys and have looked at many of them on my KZbin channel. This video was a treat and I thank you very much for your high quality, attention to detail and great information.

Oh my... I remember what HUGE fan I was of the Six Million Dollar Man TV series; and I'm still one. I never get tired even today of watching the reruns. This may sound cliche and exaggerated, but the Steve Austin action figure was like the holly grail of toys at the time. Owning such toy really raised your "popularity points" as a kid which would grow exponentially the more toys you owned from the SMDM franchise. It was so great to see all of the figures and related accessories here, even a few I have never seen nor heard of. It is so cool to see that all the toys related to the TV series made by Kenner have such a high and respectable place in the world of vintage toys. They truly deserve it.

Lee Majors was awesome as Steve Austin. I had the action figure, the rocket and the engine block you could lift by ratcheting the right arm. You had the cross hair on the eye to. There was also exposed bionics on the arm under the rubber skin lol. Good times as a kid.

I am not sure what year I got mine, but also had both the action figure and rocket/surgery center. It was probably closer to 76 so I was 8. I wonder how many met the same fate as mine. When I was about 14-15 and had outgrown them, one afternoon they stopped a lot of BB's before going in the garbage. Who knew this stuff would become collectable.

Oh, man... I had two Steves, and a Maskatron as a kid, along with the radio (that never worked) the rocket/medical center, and a Mission to Mars suit... but they were all lost to childhood. So a few years ago, I ran across a Steve Austin, and a boxed rocket/medical center (the box was messed up, but everything inside was intact) The Steve Austin was sold complete except his "engine block" and the ratcheting feature is supposedly broken... but I could feel it was trying to do something. So it's been displayed on my shelf for the past few years... telling myself that I'm going to crack it open, and see if I can fix that arm. So I watching this, and you say the head has to be turne3d for the arm to work, and it all came back to me! Holy crap ballz, I completely forgot about that! So I pulled Steve out of his rocket, and gave it a try, and lo and behold, there is nothing wrong with his arm at all! I'm assuming the seller, those couple of years ago had no idea as well! (now to find his "engine block")

Bought the 1st year action figure, just to store it for the future, to sell it,...guess the future is here. Actually, that is complete bullshit! If anything, women's equality issues were at their height during the mid and late 1970s when the show aired. And this is a good example of those issues, because Lee Majors who played Steve Austin was married to Farah Fawcett Majors. He was not happy with her coming home late from her job filming some TV series, you may or may not have heard of, called Charlie's Angels. He wanted a wifey waiting at home with his cooked dinner on the table. Farah was not about that at all, and she left him for Ryan O'Neal.

@@agfagaevart I know that men were more macho and chauvinistic back but one of the things I learned is that someone has to be a homemaker in order for a marriage with children to be successful. I don't base that role on gender at all but on how much work is really involved in meals, raising children, helping them with their homework, and doing household chores. Nor do I view that roll as demeaning in any way. Unfortunately, in this day and age both parents have to work and the children end up being raised by strangers, grandparents, or some kind of after care. One cannot blame people for becoming divorced because that is not a functional life.

I ended up with a lot of these toys after they went on clearance. I was only 6 when i got my first Steve Austin, and I was unfortunately quite accident prone. I broke his arm to where it would not go back on. Fortunately, I later got Oscar Goldman. For some reason, they made him so that his arms and legs could be removed and reattached. I used to pretend Oscar had surgery that allowed him to share Co. Austin's special mission limbs. And his briefcase was one of the most clever non-battery-using toys ever.

If you watch the Christmas episode 'A Bionic Christmas Carol', Steve is in a toy store just before he decides to teach Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian)'s Scrooge a lesson for mistreating the Bob/Fred analogue, played by one of the Darrins from Bewitched, you can spy one of his own toys on the shelf behind him. To this day, I do not know if it was a flub or a plug.

The success of The Six Million Dollar Man can be credited to the level of care Kenner gave the action figures. Had Kenner developed in the 1970s the "Swivel-Arm" battle grip Hasbro for its 1980s G. I. Joe* line and applied it to both The Six Million Dollar Man & Star Wars lines, both would've remained more popular, the show itself did go for 5 seasons & 99 episodes, with 3 TV movies, and another 3 later TV films in the late 80 (The Return of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman; Bionic Showdown (with a young Sandra Bullock), and Bionic Ever After, where Col. Steve Austin & Jaime Sommers finally tied the knot. Agree with you, Mr. Tony, that the Bionic Woman line should've used an espionage themed line, NOT one that tried to compete with Barbie. Oddly, there were at least 3 characters from the series that Kenner failed to use: Dr. Rudy Wells- Ironic as it was Dr. Wells who was in charge of Steve's bionic surgery (as well as Jaime's). He was played by both Alan Oppenheimer & Martin E. Brooks. Barney Miller (Monte Markham), who appeared as The Seven Million Dollar Man Max: The Bionic Dog. * ironically, IDW later did a G. I. Joe/Six Million Dollar Man comic miniseries.

Very interesting and informative. The Six Million Dollar Man was recently the focus of a cross-over between him and G.I. Joe, it seems there is some interest revival in the franchise. The question of the six million dollar is: there are enough fans to think about an updated toy line? If Kenner could do such a fantastic actions features for the line, imagine what they can do today.

If one remembers the TV series, I think if it weren't for "Day of The Robot" with John Saxon who later on ended up in things like Nightmare on Elm Street, one may never have had a "Maskatron" toy. I'm glad however that no one used the "Fembots" or even the robotic version of Oscar from what I consider "crossover" stories with The Bionic Woman" as a toy. If someone asks why, only one had what you once had once John Saxon got revealed as being a robot in the fight, the rest had weird "eye" placement giving them what I call "smoosh faces" once their face got knocked off.

Fantastic review! Six Mill was really my greatest love in the 1/6 sale figure lines. Even though I enjoyed Gi Joe in the late 60's and early 70's, Six Mill was really the premiere figure line in that scale. I loved... LOVED... Steve Austin and grabbed Maskatron and Big Foot with equal glee to fight him. I loved the obvious attention to detail like the roll up skin for the bionic modules and bionic eye feature. Easily one of my most beloved toys, rivaling even the Mego line. At the end I had the various outfits, and many playsets to accommodate my Steve Austin. But nothing will ever grab my attention like the first Steve Austin figure with all of the gadgets for play time. He is easily one of the ultimate toys for a child's imagination in the 70's. Awesome review!!!

My own misty-eyed recollection: Steve Austin and the Mobile Repair Unit (which I dubbed "Steve Austin's Rocket Ship") were directly involved in my coming to realize Santa Claus was not real. I believe it was Christmas 1977, I was seven years old, and some of the big kids at school and on the bus (mostly the mean ones who enjoyed spoiling things for little kids) had been talking about how Santa wasn't real. I didn't want to believe them but they did have some arguments I couldn't quite counter. Like why some kids who were good all year but who were poor got less at Christmas than a lot of other kids who maybe hadn't been as good. But I was still hanging on to Santa. I mean why risk incurring Santa's wrath, right? I knew how to hedge my bets even then. In those days my family had a tradition of opening presents on Christmas Eve. It allowed my grandparents to watch us open presents and I'm sure my parents liked being able to sleep in a little on Christmas Day. We lived on a small farm and my brother and I were sent out late to tend the animals, and when we'd come back in, Santa had come in our absence and there were presents! So it kind of worked out. That Christmas, I had received Steve Austin's Rocket Ship. Great toy! Too bad I didn't have a Steve Austin to put in it! But whatever, I was pretty happy with it all the same. About a half hour after the last present was opened, I was sitting at my grandfather's feet trying to cram a Stretch Armstrong into Steve Austin's Rocket Ship, and my mother asked why I wasn't putting Steve Austin into it. "I don't HAVE a Steve Austin!" Moms can be silly. Mom said, "What?!" She dashed off to my parent's bedroom looking worried, and came back moments later with a present from Santa with my name on the tag. "Whew! Lucky thing I caught Santa just as he was going around the back corner of the house!" she said. Now that didn't make sense at ALL. I mean the whole premise by which they sold the idea that we had presents on Christmas Eve was that Santa had so many places to go worldwide that he had to start somewhere and we happened to be lucky enough to be early on his list. So what the H*ll he would be doing lingering around my parent's BEDROOM a full half hour after delivering presents was anyone's guess and frankly seemed somewhat unsavory. I mulled it over while I was having fun with my new Steve Austin (who fit perfectly in my Steve Austin's Rocket Ship), and decided the kids at school were right after all, and my mother had just gone and got my present which had been missed in the rush to get the presents out. I still faked a belief in Santa for a few years because my parents and grandparents seemed to have a lot of fun thinking I thought Santa was real, but from that moment on, I pretty much knew the score. But I never, ever tried to ruin it for the little kids.

I had the basic Steve Austin figure, Maskatron, and the Bionic Transport/Repair Station - oh, and the board game. I desperately wanted the rest, but never got them. Although Maskatron came with an Oscar mask, so I sometimes used him as an Oscar figure.

I'm sure it was highly successful in the USA, but in(at least my part of) the UK, we never saw anything beyond the original figure and repair station.

Nice that you gave the show such a good video. Steve could run 60 miles an hour and All in the Family dominated top spot most of the 70s though.

My brother had the Steve Austin action figure. We were fans of the show. When the Bionic Woman TV series came along, I got her action figure. Both toys were fantastic, Kenner made great toys back in the day.

Yep, had that one. At the time, Chicklets could fit in the shirt pockets, simulating the sensor packs from the first movie. Never got Maskatron though. You didn't mention the laser-cannon arm from the Critical Assignment sets.

At five and six years old, how many “bad dreams” did I awake from having dreamt about Maskatron or the Fem Bot? There was an episode of Six Million Dollar Man when Maskatron impersonates Oscar or Rudy. It freaked me out. The beginning of the Hulk scared me a little too. As did one particular episode of Fantasy Island and a movie about reincarnation.

Six million dollars man toys were a rage back in 70s but I do remember something else that came out round then the was a toy car's I think were done as will a Steve and Jamie had vans or Steve had a helicopter? I think there was an attempt to bring them out later when in the later 80s the six million dollar man returned with the Bionic Woman to slightly different to the original ones that were had different outfits and had better looks. I liked those shows I think Lee Major was highly regarded as an actor from other series he had done and he'll be always regarded as the six million dollar man and the fall guy which I think had action figures to?

Funny as a kid I remember watching the 6 million dollar man . After the first episode I told my mom I wanted a bionic arm. She said you know they would have to take your real arm first. I told her I dont care I wanted a bionic arm . She just laughed and walked away .
