It's sad, even as a small child I always linked this song to a desert themed zone, despite the fact it had NO sand in it at all, just a lot of oil and platforms. Then as a young adult after learning about the invasion the U.S. made in Afghanistan for their oil, this zone made much more sense.

It was actually originally composed for a scrapped desert level called Dust Hill Zone, but after it got scrapped some of the music got swapped around

I think it was proven to be a glitch in the game code... it was a code for a bunch of extra continues, but something in the programming made the music code glitch out.

Oh yeah, totally. :o You know maybe they did want to keep it after, they recycled one of their game endings for a boss-theme in Triple Trouble too, so that would make sense if they just did that.
