I can see a modern Doom RPG working. With new-Dooms focus on resource management and a system similar to VATS that lets you target different limbs.

I think the Blazk family connections need some clarification/sources: * BJ and Keen being related comes from an official Wolfenstein 3D strategy guide that also namedrops BJ's wife (Julia Marie Peterson) and son (Arthur Kenneth Blaze). * Keen showed up in D2 as an easter egg where you shoot 4 Keens hanging to exit map 32. * "Doomguy" (Stan) and BJ being related is tied to D2RPG and Wolf RPG. * MachineGames involve a different BJ where his old wife and son are replaced with Anya and the twin daughters. This also means in Quake Champions, Doomguy (Who is both classic Doomguy and the Doomslayer) meets a BJ that is not related to him (Because MG BJ may not be the same as classic BJ). But the "idverse" was always a mess because of all these rectons, easter eggs, involvement from different people etc.

I actually played this on my iPod touch, that and Wolfenstein RPG were both pretty great. I’m sad most of the games from that era can’t be run anymore

@@inqurity they probably have been backed up for PC or emulated use. Probably even on Android. But the problem is, there is an OS compatibility cutoff where anything before like the iPhone 7 won’t even install to your device anymore

I love this game. It's fun and nostalgic (I played it back on my Sony Ericsson). On one of the terminals there are mentions of Dr. Guerard (one of the scientists from Doom 1 RPG), by the way. Spoilers: VIOS translates to Virtual Icon of Sin. If you select MALLOC, it would be harder to fight him at the end (he deals more damage), while selecting DELETE gives him boost to damage in current fight. Thank you for reviewing both and highlighting that they are on PC now! I revisited them on PC and it was fun. P.S. Scoped Rifle is more useful than you might think. Headshots always land a critical hit.

Thanks for taking the time to cover these ID gems Carmack literally made out of boredom in between building rockets (Doom 2 RPG was a far more conventional project but I believe Doom RPG/ Wolf RPG were mostly just him and the occasional roped in colleague).

They did put it on the DS (kind of). It's called "Orcs and Elves". Same engine, same gameplay, different theme/aesthetic.

Doom/Wolfenstien Rpg were some of the finest and most creative takes on rpg's and it was all to work around the limitations of mobile phones back then.

I remember playing this on my old button phone when I was a kid, was one of my favorite games. It's just a shame that every game on the symbianOS platform (the old phone operating system) is forgotten, there were quite a few gems such as this one on it.

those re-drawn sprites look good. That's surprising because thus far, still no authentic redrawn/upscale version of the orignal Doom sprites exist. Now they aren't that much from the orignal resoluton- but it's just enough to look fresh.

I think the reason Doom RPG is not being ported to other platforms for now is unlike many other Doom ports we don't have the source code, the ports on the PC are reverse enginered and pretty new, so the talk and development around it is in its infancy for now. But honestly a homebrew for things like GBA and PSP would be dope. P.S: Now when I go back to older Jarek videos they feel so wrong without Into the AM sponsorship.

I remember playing Doom2 RPG on my old Nokia 7260 phone (look at old Doctor Who - I think end of first season with 10th Doctor - Rose's mom uses one) back in the day. Funny enough - game ran absolutely fine on that one. What I remember (and how it was designed), the targeting was more of a waiting minigame - you had to shoot the target when your reticle would pass through it. And in threadmill you'll just press 4 and 6 (or was it 1 and 3 - I don't remember) alot and that would be that. From what I remember is that game looked actually pretty good for a mobile game at that time - mind you, I had access to both PSP and DS so of course good 3d graphics for a mobile device was nothing new for me, although I still liked the fact that I had access to the game even when my console was not around me.

I loved Doom II RPG, played it all the time on my iPod touch when it was still around. I thought the story was pretty damn cool, accessing the cheat menu was fun too. I wish the first and second rpg’s got ported to the DS or something like the first Zenonia game that’s lost every other title except for 5
