Yknow, I really like the corny story. It reminds me of that era, before every game cost a hundred zillion dollars to make and back when you could sell a video game as just a game with a little story... instead of every game ever needing to be this super serious realistic 'immersive' environment. This is a video game, and it knows it.
@drivanradosivic13573 жыл бұрын
the funny thing is, games had the immersive sim genre, but apparently that is too hard to make. but it is very lovely(for me) to play. agreed that "supah seriooous realiztik" gmaes are boring for they sacrifice fun for being a interactive movie.
@thesequeltoobama70303 жыл бұрын
@@drivanradosivic1357 I agree to a point, some games like Rainbow and EFT get the balance of arcade style gameplay with more ‘realistic’ elements like drastically lower time to kill and all that, and they still manage to stay fun. What’s the worst is when you drop into a game of ARMA tryna fuck about with your mates and you stumble across a bunch of milsim neckbeards that get angry if you break rank
@ivansalamon70283 жыл бұрын
@@thesequeltoobama7030 Erm, what the hell is arcadey about either of those, especially EFT? It has gamey aspects, I mean duh, its a game. But it is as realistic as they come. I disagree with you two. Realistic doesn't mean not fun. Some of the best, most gripping games I have ever played were and are realistic. And games were not necessarily unrealistic because they were older. Gamey? Sure. Worse? NAh.
@thesequeltoobama70303 жыл бұрын
@@ivansalamon7028 what’s arcadey about rainbow six, a hero shooter with a man so muscular that he can literally run through a wall? Or how all of the riot shield operators can sprint forever whilst holding a huge armoured shield in front of them? Is there any chance of bleeding if you get hit? I don’t know, in retrospect rainbow six now appears to me as the epitome of realism. EFT, whilst having a stronger sense of realism in damage taking/healing, resource management and more of a traditional ‘realistic’ combat system, it still doesn’t feel like a true ‘realism’ game like squad or insurgency. Now, you seem to have misunderstood my point, and this may be in part to my shoddy wording. I don’t hate games that aim for a more grounded and real feel at all, with arma 3 being one of my most played games on pc. I just think the fun is taken out of it when a huge group of a player base try and enforce this idea that if you’re not pretending you’re in the military and doing call signs and all that shit you’re just a waste of space on the server. I understand this for more high stakes games of squad or arma, but sometimes I want to be able to experience a more grounded game but also be able to talk shit to my mates without getting hounded by some nonce probably too overweight to get into the real military.
@guyofminimalimportance73 жыл бұрын
I think there's a balance where tone is the most important factor as to what does and doesn't work. If a story is trying to be serious or intense, then an immersive and realism-centric style can work incredibly. If a Game's story is supposed to be campy or outrageous than a more tongue-in-cheek tone is justified and can really help make the experience fun and exciting. Different end goals require different paths of getting there. Case-in point. Compare The Last of Us, (the first one) and any given Devil May Cry game. Last of Us' narrative is so heavily built around genuine human emotion and realistic reactions to grief that an immersive tone is really the only way to go. If it were like DMC with a wise cracking protagonist doing somersaults over crumbling buildings and fucking around with his enemies constantly then almost none of that powerful message would have gotten through. Meanwhile if Devil May Cry had a super grounded tone where almost no fantasy elements were present and Dante was just this introspective, sad man who only ever talks about his tragic past then almost none of the series' charm would make it through. (Hell, in the case of the latter the campy tone works for the story because once the comic relief and silliness stops and more focus is put on drama it stands out to the player and makes them focus.) The reason Corney plots you're not supposed to take seriously died out is because they feel disposable. A campy, over the top narrative can still have a genuine effect on someone if there's heart behind it. Meanwhile a dramatic, thickly layered plot can draw the player into another place and resonate on an emotional level. Simple, Corney plots with no thematic consistency just feel supplementary and uninteresting.

I remember the developers, after this game released, were teasing that they wanted to make a 3rd one, but instead of talking more in depth about that they instead showed off a demo they made of a port of Halo 2 to the 3DS that they wanted to make official but never got the greenlight from either Microsoft or Nintendo. It apparently was a well-done port iirc. The developers were apparently tech wizards since the Conduit 2 looks so good because they use graphical techniques from the 360 on it, basically making it a 360 game running on the Wii. The 360 graphics thing was from previews and interviews of the game before release, whereas the Halo 2 tech demo was from one of the E3 shows at some point, but I can't remember the exact year or anything.

But I believe while the tech used for the game evolved nicely from the first game, the late game wasn't as good as I thought. It felt cheaper when I got it day one, but I soon saw it was indeed a much better game in almost every way. Maybe to some other people the initial impression was stronger. I played it a lot, I played Duke Nukem a lot, but I actually cn't remember ever noticing it's the same guy, which is weird, since you pointing it out with those voice clips made it seem so ridiculously obvious. Wii was my main console, and I got nearly all somewhat worthwhile releases on it back then. I think the reason so many people said the sequel was worse ironically was the ending. (Stupidly long rant bc I was bored ahead.) Corney plots you can't takes seriously may not bug everyone, especially classic game fans who grew up with almost storyless games; but this was just around the time when serious storytelling in videogames was starting to take off. This came out in 2011, the same year as Portal 2, Arkham city, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Uncharted 3, and many other story driven titles. Additionally this was years after Halo had proven that a story driven trilogy could work with videogames, years after Half-Life 2's ultra immersive style cemented it as one of the greatest games of all time, and midway through the Mass Effect Trilogy, which proved that videogames have unique storytelling opportunities other forms of media don't. In the first video the concept of the Wii having no "Hardcore" games in its lineup alienating a big audience was brought up, and I feel like the story decisions of Conduit 2 are precisely what ejected the game from this market. This was a time when players were starting to take pride in games being seen as a legitimate storytelling device, since only a few years previously they were seen exclusively as the least intelligent, least artistically credible form of media. This "Hardcore" movement was a big part of what changed the stigma and made detailed or interesting game plots mainstream. But beyond the quality of these stories, the tone and intent was arguably the most important part. Cartoonish styles with minimal plot or consistency were starting to be seen as obsolete and lazy. It was hard to argue that a game's story having no interesting themes or characters was better than games which put in the effort to have both. To be seen as part of this "Hardcore" movement a game needed to at least feel like it was trying to be mature and interesting. in retrospect, many games from this era were claiming to have more substance then they really did; but it's that promise of something more which convinced people to make a purchase. The Conduit 1's plot was poorly communicated, but it still dealt with "Hardcore" themes and story beats like genetic experimentation, government coverups, and terrorism. It had the image of a hardcore game with a serious story; it just needed to do a better job making use of cutscenes and gameplay rather than exposition dumps. Conduit 2 on the other hand has a silly plot which feels like it knows how hard it is to take seriously and does not care. Ending the story with American presidents traveling through time in power armor to fight aliens is hilarious, but it doesn't feel "Hardcore" at all. At this time in the industry, this felt like another low effort, no inspiration story written with the "It's a videogame, no one cares" mentality players were desperately trying to distance themselves from at this point.This hurts especially bad for Wii players who saw the first game as validation that they were still part of this new movement. That being said; it's not that a campy plot like this was doomed to fail, but coming after a more serious one, and feeling like it was only silly for silliness sake ruined its chances at being received well. Borderlands came out during this time frame too, and it was very campy. So were most big Japanese games on the market. The difference however, is that these games still had heart to their stories; underneath their silly exteriors there were still emotional plots which gave them credibility. you didn't need to be edgy or realistic to be seen as valid, but you did need to feel like there was effort applied. Conduit 2's ending being so insane and unexpected is really funny and entertaining at face value; but it plays directly into the stigma players didn't want to be associated with. This was not a game proving that it was as valid a form of entertainment as film, it was the undesired silliness this community wanted nothing to do with anymore. (TL;DR That ending, along with a generally sillier atmosphere throughout the game gave a lot of players a bad impression because this was the time when everyone was pushing to prove that games actually could have good stories.)

So what I'm understanding is that gamers were insecure and wanted to be accepted by people that didn't even play video games.

@@Jarekthegamingdragon I'll have to look through my draw filled with Wii FPS games to suggest some to play. There are some obscure ones I forget. Are you not counting out Third Person Shooters?

I know the Wii controls are what made this game stand out more, but honestly I would kill for a PC Conduit 3.

I remember my disappointment when this game was delayed a year before its eventual release, but quickly forgotten about due to the release of Call of Duty MW2, and other FPS games through the following years. Ironic because I originally got the first Conduit game because the store didn't have a copy of Call of Duty MW.

I always find the concept of sprinting for 20 seconds and suddenly they are winded, I am someoen who walks to and from work, a 30 minute walk to and back, I run for roughly 30 seconds (maybe a little more) before I need to chug down water to stop my lungs feeling dry.

I always thought the Wiimote would be good for FPS, but unfortunately the main audience for the Wii was everyone BUT fps players.

I remember buying the first Conduit along with the Orange Box (just for Team Fortress 2, I don't like Half Life). I played it a bit but I spend the entire summer in TF2. I bought Conduit 2 a year or so ago and haven't played it yet. Considering your reviews, I'll probably skip the first one and play this instead. I look forward to the Red Steel reviews. I don't have bad memories of the first one, but that was when the Wii was released and I didn't finish it. I remeber enemies spamming voices though. I got the second one also a year or so, played it for a bit, it was okay, didn't finish it. I have to go back to it someday.

I loved the first game, but I never played the Second. I think it came out at a time where I wasn’t particularly in a position of spending money. Lol
