This video answers the questions: Can I analyze the mental health personality factors that we see in the Netflix series “Ozark?” I will specifically examine the personalities of Martin and Wendy Byrde and the representation of bipolar disorder we see in Ben Davis (Wendy Byrde’s brother).
Ozark follows the story of a financial advisor and white-collar criminal named Martin Byrde and his family, as they moved from Chicago to Osage Beach, Missouri on the Lake of the Ozarks. They have a number of adventures as they begin to interact with the local population and businesses in order to advance their money laundering activities.
In the series there are some shots of the actual Lake of the Ozarks, but the majority of the show is actually filmed in Atlanta and Savannah Georgia.

The Dark Triad is made up of three traits: Narcissism, Psychopathy, and Machiavellianism
Narcissism is characterized by a strong sense of entitlement and grandiosity, a high need for power, and an arrogant and condescending attitude
Psychopathy: This trait is often viewed as the darkest of the dark triad. It’s characterized by a lack of empathy, guilt, or remorse, recklessness, deceptiveness, fearlessness, and a manipulative interpersonal style.
Machiavellianism is characterized by a cynical view of human nature, a distrust of people, and a calculating and deceitful interpersonal style.

I think it's worthwhile to note that Ben's violent episode as a substitute school teacher was in defense of a girl being bullied by her classmates. Someone sent an embarrassing photo of a girl in class to all of her classmates. Ben took all the kids' phones away. He might have been the bullied girl's hero.

I actually liked that Jacob Snell was killed off, because it highlighted the parallel dynamics with Jacob/Darlene and Martin/Wendy- being a criminal couple, with the wife eventually becoming more dangerous/engaged in the criminal lifestyle than the husband. Jacob and Darlene represent a possible future Martin and Wendy. Like Jacob says to Martin, “What do you do, Marty, when the bride that took your breath away becomes the wife that makes you hold your breath in terror?” Wendy crosses that line when she embraces her new lifestyle in the last season and has Ruth’s father killed, then her own brother. Martin fails to adjust to their new positions alongside her, he crumbles at the pastor’s death. He may be a morally better man, but he’s the weaker criminal.

I lived at Lake of the Ozarks. The lake was built by the power company back in the 1920's. However, the development of the surrounding land was originally to a large extent the work of the Chicago mob. The purpose was to launder money. I was told this by different sources, both in Illinois and the Ozarks.

Great analysis! I thought Wendy's brother exhibited more the symptoms of schizoaffective disorder instead of just purely bipolar. I think they used the label of bipolar because it's more familiar to general audiences, but in my opinion, they wasted an opportunity to educate the audience of a less known disorder.

I've been wondering if you were going to do an Ozark analysis!!!🤔 As someone diagnosed with BP1 since my late teens, I totally agree... they made Ben seem dumb and childish at times due to his illness. It was irritating to watch when they did that. As a writer, I agree they did that to justify Wendy setting him up. He was becoming too much of a liability to the family. There were other aspects of his symptom manifestation, (and how his family and people close to him reacted to him), that I felt were portrayed somewhat accurately, however. Overall a great show. Thanks for another great video, Doc!!!💪🏽💪🏽

I think I can agree with you. My brother has been diagnosed with Bipolar by one therapist and Borderline by another, and I felt at times, Ben's character was presented as a little more Borderline than Bipolar. Although the taxi cab scene is definitely a manic or hypomanic episode, so they got that right.

I would agree that we should be as careful as we can to be sensitive to others and guard against offending inadvertently. And to err on the side of caution when with strangers, or in a formal setting. But many of these PC SJW are just as offensive, and self absorbededly oblivious to the sensibilities of others as well. Example: Outside magazine had an article about a woman identifying as non binary who presented a Male persona. She hiked the Appalacian trail solo, chatting with others. In her article about her experience she was angry that hardly anyone could keep her preferences straight (she wanted to be referred to as they, etc.) nor were they interested in her struggles or sexual experiences. I would think that when one encountered strangers hiking one would be at pains to establish mutual interests for an enjoyable conversation, not use an enforced captive audience to pontificate on a relatively exclusive personal situation which may not be relatable. TMI.

Thank you for your analyzations of 3 of the characters. But since we have a year to 18 months before the series begins season 4 (if there is a season 4), perhaps you can do Ruth and Darlene. To me it seems they've "dumbed" down, or at least "sedated" Ruth as the series progressed. As to Darlene, I think even Bundy himself would say she's over the top. I really can't think of anyone in real life like her.

I binge watched this at the beginning of COVID lockdown. My all time favorite. But I agree with you about the portrayal of bi polar disorder in Wendy's brother. I have a loved one with BPD and felt this fiction could exacerbate the associated stigma. One thing about the show is the likability of the main protagonists, Marty and Wendy. Even though they are bad people I couldn't help but empathize with them. Dr. Grande, I'm curious what your thoughts are about the late Johnny Carson. I'm reading a biography by his best friend and lawyer, Henry Bushkin. The man on television that America loved was a deeply troubled soul. He had a deep hatred for his mother, Ruth. He never could please her. He blames Ruth for his inability in relationships with women. All of Hollywood loved him. And yet he died alone and did not have a funeral.

@@NotALizardPerson81 i agree that it's nature, and it would most likely be impossible for a primary psychopath to be able to develop affective empathy equal to that of a non-psychopath. i was wondering though if there might be some sort of work-around that would allow a psychopath to function more or less normally, particularly in close relationships. the main reason i avoid romantic relationships is because i can't keep up the displays of empathic understanding longterm. logically, it shouldn't be difficult to do, but i find the whole exercise exhausting for some reason as an aside, Princess Mononoke is a solid film

@@thenarrator4786 I think yes, as long as the psychopath was working inside of a moral or ethical framework which they were committed to. I don't think they would always "get" situations and why the other person was reacting in such a way but once it was explained to them and they actively pursued understanding then it would change them. There are examples of people who have the "warrior gene" and people with this tend to exhibit signs of psychopathy however they aren't criminal and live relatively normal lives with a decreased empathy for others.

Interesting analysis of Byrds. I did not see Marty as a sociopath but Machiavellian makes some sense. I think his desire not to brag about things or be grandiose about things blinds me a bit. I am much less tolerant of Wendy- I think truly it is her smugness that annoys me most about her, and her mean, selfish ways. Ben was played with a lot of heart but ultimately as dr. Grande said it was his naïveté which killed him. However I think it gets lost on most of us that he was actually a voice of truth and reason... however he existed in a cesspool of sickness, evil and deceit so had to be snuffed out. Interesting Subtle points about the bipolar not being well/realistically represented here. There are fast cycling and other kinds so would have thought the show would have had a clinical psychologist aboard as show adviser on that to make sure Ben’s character’s actions adhered believably within a range of clinical patterns for one kind or another.

About Marty's criminal behavior, I think it should be noted that he is under inhumane pressure by criminals who threaten to kill him and his family. Couldn't it be that some of his machiavellism is basically forced upon him in order to barely survive? Any time he has tried to slow down he has been under immense pressure to keep going. He must have a constant level of stress, and visions of what could go wrong. Personally I think the cartel is portrayed as excessively smart, cruel and bad. I'm sure they are cruel and bad, but to this level? In that regard I probably agree that the amount of murders is way too high, and it's not really needed, if we look at Better Call Saul.

Since being unemplpyed due to this covid crap, Ive been binge watching Netflix. I have to wait to watch your video in full after watching the show since I dont want to hear the spoilers. Also, I cant wait for summer to drive down to the Ozarks for the weekend. 💯👍 P.S. You should totally watch Mad Men and make an analysis on that show.

Thanks Grande! It was driving me crazy how they portrayed Ben. I didn’t know the traits of bpd but it made no sense that he went from being an adult to a child. I was reading somewhere that they think he slowly spiraled from his meds leaving his system. Makes more sense that they wanted people to have more compassion for him.

My own obsession with the intro has less to do with the objects themselves, but more with reverse engineering how the graphic designer managed to turn each object into a rough approximations of Z-A-R-K

I agree with you on Ben. I really enjoyed this show. One thing with Wendy that you didn't address was her behavior when she was young, breaking into nice house and acting like she lived there. Also her depression episodes, like I think after her miscarrage. I noticed a couple times she would slowly creep into bed when things got to heavy.. and Marty seemed to understand it like it was a normal thing. Idk just a thought. I noticed it because of my Severe Depression episodes... I know once I ease into bed, I'll be there for a long while. I wish you were my doctor.

I have a much better idea of what Machiavellianism looks like and how it differs from APD and NPD. Great illustration.

@Van Zandt I can understand as these three types often overlap--as in the case of Marty. Dr. Grande always does a good job of applying the criteria to the diagnosis. Marty has elements of all. I discern Machiavellianism by the intention of the individual. Narcissists want self inflation of some type, psychopaths take what they want without regret, and the Machiavellian could even have socially approved goals, but wishes to attain them by crafty manipulative means. He would prefer that his power base is undetected and subtle. Partly to preserve his ability to control others and continue to achieve his goals. I hope this helps somewhat.

I have to binge watch it, not many I do but it is a fascinating series. All the characters are superbly written and acted. Wendy is the most interesting I think and perhaps the most ruthless, she is turning into the Walter White of the show .

Eighth comment” - 210 views and happy that the BIG FIVE are on the menus for 259k Subscribers 😄👍 and more. But so far the menus is “take out” and still. Dr. Grande is still an excellent waiter to acquaint us with with the “ Machiavelli “ special of the day with “Factor One “ on the side, Narcissist appetizer , and depression and manic cake for desert with impulsive icing on top. And euphoric express coffee to top off this “killer meal”. Can’t wait until I get to dine in. Great job Dr, Grande, 😂😂😂😂 This has been a metaphoric experience for sure. 👋👋👋

My daughter is bipolar and is prone to aggression and violence. I also belong to a group for parents of adult children with bipolar disorder and I hear story after story of almost identical stories. Not sure why bipolar disorder symptoms are always portrayed as being just highs and lows; from my experience it’s far more than that.

Probably because most of the writers have no experience with it and just go by pop culture or what they read in a textbook. Similar to how schizophrenia was portrayed as dissociative identity disorder for decades.

I just discovered your channel and like it very much. Do you have any videos on why some people always hog the conversation? I have a friend who, whenever we talk on the phone, starts talking like one would give a speech. And when I get the rare chance to say something, they immediately start to turn it back to their own topic. And on ending the phone conversation, they will say "in closing" then give a final statement, then say goodbye, and that's the end of the conversation. Thank you.

Hello Dr. Grande, great channel by the way. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to share your observation and thoughts on the film Misery. Anne Wilkes (Kathy Bates), if the behavior is consistent with her characters personality. Seasonal depression, mood disorder, psychotic, her overall highs and lows, the fact that she has a past history of criminal behavior as a nurse. Would love to hear your overall eval thoughts. Do you think the producers/writer did a great job at portraying the behaviors or not. Thanks for your time.

As someone with Bipolar Disorder, I really liked the actor’s performance that played Ben. The thing that’s far off about it is the violence and the meek / confused phase. But the taxi ride away from Helen’s house was pretty good. Maybe a BIT exaggerated, but I don’t think I’ve seen another example that’s better than that of jumbled thoughts and conversation.

I'm bipolar since '95. Can I fill out taxes and contracts? Sure. Do I experience violence and erratic behavior? 100%. Just like Ben, not AT ALL when medicated. To me, Ben was very exaggerated (and given extra "symptoms").. but the chaos is on point.

I always wonder about the role environmental conditions: I wonder about the relationship between Wendy and Ben... the history... it’s a really creative show... I’ve seen mania at its worst, and despite emotional lability, most want to take care of everybody. They become terribly upset: what’s happening to me?! Is it me?! Not the violence portrayed in this show... good show but that really bothered me. Thanks for your professional validation: stay safe, Dr. Grande!
