Add to that, Redge, that his dad co-signed on his FOID (Firearm Owner's Identification) application so he could get a gun. However, turning a blind eye to this kid, giving him all the trappings of an adult life based simply on his age of 21, that's not supportive. They ENABLED him by giving him an apartment, giving him vehicles, giving him guns. He had total freedom and NO RESPONSIBILITY. Didn't pay for himself or even contribute towards his support. These are systemic problems, and changing the system is hard. Look how the gun rights people pushed back and changed things. We outnumber them yet we have to be willing to dedicate time to a cause we feel the strongest about and focus on that one. Here in SF where I live, we finally after 75 years , got the GGBridge Board to change it’s mind and decide that we needed to protect people who were vulnerable, from jumping to their deaths from the iconic bridge here. It is under construction and will hopefully be completed in Jan 2023. There were many roadblocks along the way, and it took way too long. So many have been able to jump to their deaths while we debated, testified, petitioned for funds, had laws changed, got signatures, spoke to the media, were berated and insulted by members of the public, and were pushed back etc., etc. We can never give up, that’s the point. And although it may be too late for a member of our own family, for our child, or partner, or neighbor, we will be saving people in the future from this life altering experience. We have to re-decide who we want to be, now that we see who we really are. We are being forced to take a good long look in the mirror. We have to look at who we look up to and want to be like. Is it someone fake with a life that is unattainable for 99.99999% of the people ? Why do we think we are not enough ? Who is telling us that?mIs it on the tv all day everyday? If they admitted his issues, they might have to look at their parenting and take responsibility for handing him everything, and never getting appropriate help, and they don't want to do that. Instead, ignore issues, throw money at him and pretend everything's ok. And I say this as a parent who saw a child headed in a bad direction and he did want the help. it gets tough legally. I work in the mental health field. It frustrating because red flags can alert you, but red flags themselves are not illegal and you really can't do anything if they are refusing help unless they are openly and directly making very clear threats. For example statements like "I'd love to end the world" wouldn't be enough to do anything. he would have to directly say "I intend to do a shooting, I have my gun with me and I am going there now" then they can intervene. We go through it all the time trying to get people who can't care for themselves pushed into treatment . I saw one case where a guy was homeless in the middle of winter, walking around in 10 below zero weather with no shoes and no jacket and that still wasn't enough to show he couldnt care for himself----frustrating. he ended up getting frost bite and lost some toes but the courts simply said it's not illegal

We need to hold people (parents) accountable for putting guns in the hands of their mentally ill children. The same problem occurred at Sandy Hook. Once enabling parents are given prison sentences, we will see a change. Illinois has stricter gun laws than some other states. If those laws had been followed, this could have been prevented. Parents should not be able to side step laws. His father belongs in prison. Do not make guns accessible to ‘troubled’ ‘kids’. How many times do we have to learn this lesson?

It does seem like that would help but this is America the country of gun worship. You'll have to deal with the NRA and their lobbyists and the gun nutters. It doesn't and shouldn't have to come to that but this is America. Fun fact: Some guy that use to sell a lot of guns said after every mass shooting he would see a spike in gun sales and especially for that specific gun.

@Mark Keogh, while I agree with everything you commented as pertains to the mindset of family members in cases like this, I do think they bear some responsibility. Not for Robert’s actions, but certainly for providing him access to weapons when he had previously, on multiple occasions, threatened violence against himself and others. The police had to be involved at one point due to Robert’s unstable behaviour and were reassured by *his parents* that he was receiving mental health treatment and that the confiscated collection of knives should be returned, as they supposedly belonged to Sr. To subsequently sign forms allowing your mentally unstable and potentially violent child to legally purchase firearms is incredibly negligent! No parent wants to believe that their child is capable of murder, but to knowingly facilitate a mentally disturbed person’s access to weapons definitely should raise questions of legal culpability.

I am appalled by the lack of attention and treatment for people who even express words indicating they have suicidal or homicidal thoughts. I retired from work including the mental health field almost 30 years ago. During my professional education and 20 years of employment in the field, it was established practice to take even hints of suicidal or homicidal ideas seriously and act immediately. This often meant a 72 hour commitment for in patient psychiatric evaluation and treatment with out patient follow up. To fail to take the person seriously was regarded as the equivalent of saying “better luck next time!” and a signal to try harder to make their thoughts/gestures to harm themselves or others more apparent. A tiny “red flag” did not go unnoticed or untreated much in the same way people are not allow to even joke about having a gun at an airport or yell FIRE in a crowded place. Back then it seemed like teachers, police, other professionals and even some of the general public operated with these principles in mind. The few individuals who did hint at suicide/homicide “just for attention” quickly regretted it and didn’t repeat it. What changed these highly effective practices? Why are we now encouraging tiny red flags to grow into mass tragedy before we help people?

Unfortunately, mineral imbalances are being passed down generation after generation. I can see hair patterns in hair mineral analysis that influence people's emotions. Copper/zinc imbalance contributes to things like bipolar disorder. Stress depletes zinc and copper is antagonistic to zinc. Copper is related to the emotional animal brain. Women actually tend to be copper toxic due to its relation to estrogen. Think of PMS which is when a woman is higher in estrogen or copper during her cycle. A mother will pass down her mineral imbalances. Our younger generation is very depleted of minerals and has a higher toxic load because of this. Top it off with social media, the news, broken homes, and the division in our country it's no wonder our youth are struggling. It's quite sad. From your statements about the family sweeping Robert's mental and emotional issues under the rug with the police, it's too bad his parents did not have the knowledge and wisdom to recognize that Robert had a problem and to seek help for him. Social media is also to blame. Teens and young adults crying about how bad life is while they have literally everything anyone could ever want. Even though our lives are so much better than they have ever been people still spread negativity and the belief that what you don't have is far more important than you do have. This depicts the beauty of the world and our belongings in a terrible light and sets people up to never be happy. Once that happens they have nothing to look forward to, everything is evil, everyone is suffering and can never find happiness. Is it really that big of a leap for these deluded ungrateful teens to lash out in the ways they do. Especially if they somehow frame their actions as some sort of rebellion against the terrible world they assume they live in.

I wasn’t the most popular kid in school. Was poor, didn’t have the right clothes, didn’t listen to the right music, didn’t live on the right side of town. Was an angry young man. Like many kids out there. But never did anything like this ever cross my mind. The question is why does this seem like an answer for so many young men?
@tammylewis24082 жыл бұрын
Much of it is due to the media. You see a lot of music videos and songs denigrating women, graphic video games that involve shooting, and social media sites that promote and provoke violence. Add someone who has sociopathic tendencies/mental issues and parents that don't parent, and it's a recipe for disaster. In Japan, which has the lowest rate of gun violence and strictest laws, former PM Shinzo Abe was killed by someone who was mentally ill, and had a grudge against him. How did it happen?? How did this person be able to get past security and kill Abe? These are questions so many of us are asking about here in the wake of shootings in Highland Park, Philly, Uvalde, and Buffalo and the common factor is they all were mentally ill and had help from loved ones in obtaining weapons, bypassing gun laws. Everyone speaks about guns and laws, and it is a touchy subject, but people are neglecting the real issue, and that is mental health. Instead of blaming guns, there should be more funding and awareness of mental health and accountability of parents, if they are involved. And given the political and social divisions, it's no wonder so many teens and young adults are having a hard time coping with life and feeling lonely and isolated and either turn to groups that promote violence or commit suicide.

No Place is safe anymore. Every day could be your last day. Realize that. The Police visited the perp's home when he was acting out enough to have the family call the police. The Police were told by the perps father.... those are my knives. They gave the knives back. It has also been reported that the perp and his father discussed mass shootings the night before the event. Surely there was awareness of his mental status before the event. I hope he is charged Federally - as a domestic terrorist. Should get the needle - and mom and dad should be required to witness. They enabled this little monster. How does a high school drop out - accumulate enough money to buy a small arsenal ? ( His allowance ? ) How and Where - did this individual practice his firearms skills ?

America can't afford to ban weapons, like your measly country did, because America has the unfortunate role of protecting the whole world from evil countries like Russia, China, and Iran. Australia doesn't have a problem with lack of weapons, because you can just ask America for help when China attacks you, which China would have done a while ago has it not been for America's presence in the region.
