The cop's unmarked van took the wrong way down the road, stopped at an odd angle across the street in front of Corey's vehicle, gets out and just starts asking "You good?" repeatedly while approaching Corey's vehicle at 3 in the night. Who wouldn't be afraid? I don't think cops who are known for demonstrating poor judgement should be allowed to continue in their line of duty.

Very, very difficult to get rid of bad cops, but "loss of public trust" is one way. You need a chief of police who actually wants to get rid of the bad cop, which is a big reason why these procedures are rarely invoked

@@RRonco the threat of charging the superior/s with something like "the failure to identity and report a potentially dangerous officer" (after the fact), I am sure would encourage them to act. -- Obviously, this is just hypothetical. Of course there's many convoluted policies and legislation that would vary from country to country to implement this type of thing. But, I mention it because it "seems" more straightforward compared to other potential options; e.g. having more intensive compulsory psych evaluation, etc.

I’m not convinced that Corey even grabbed his gun to begin with. I think that Corey being on the phone before being so startled by Newman meant that he wouldn’t have had time to grab his gun before fleeing and/or wouldn’t have thought to grab it in the commotion. I wonder if maybe Newman made good use of those 33 seconds, taking the gun out of Corey’s vehicle and tossing it in the grass. That’s just pure speculation on my part.

One really important thing though: events like this are extremely rare. In the USA violence from anyone is rare (a little bit less rare in certain high violence cities); and even more rare when a police officer is the cause of the problem. Dr Grande should curb these kinds of stories with the known facts about LE overall.

The police unions are no help, defending to the hilt every egregious action by their members. I get that it is important to make sure each side gets fair treatment but when have you ever heard the union come out and say “Yeah, that behavior does not represent what we are about, we need to weed people like this out”. Mr. Raja was out looking for action. The fact that he did not identify himself leads me to think that he wanted Corey to do something that would justify shooting. If Corey knew mr. Raja was a LEO, he would have complied fully, which isn't what the officer wanted.

I had a pretty scary encounter with an off-duty officer once as I waited for my gf outside our appartment, and out of boredom, decided to pick up some trash near my appartment and from the nearby parkway. This cop approached me very aggressively demanding to know if I had "needles on me". It scared the shit out of me and I almost ran but then noticed the badge hanging near his belt. Within seconds four squad cars surrounded us. Luckily my gf showed up and saved my ass.

I remember hearing about this case when I lived in the Palm Beach, Fl area. I never heard the outcome of this case. Thanks for your insight on this case. I remember It was a shock for the community to hear that a cop did not identify himself and shot the victim in the back while fleeing. It was a devastating day for Corey's family since they were a tight-nit family.

Most people would not comply with some stranger’s demands, especially at night on the side of the road. That could get you killed. And I think a lot of people would hesitate to believe a plain-clothed guy was a cop because criminals impersonate them sometimes. Those are the kinds of situations people would feel they need to defend themselves from. What a tragedy. Cops tend to look at everyone like they’re up to no good.

Kari , if ever you get pulled over and you don't like the way the person is acting you can call 9-1-1 on them and ask them to send another police officer because that police officer is acting strangely or making you not have confidence in them or if you think he's not a real cop just tell them . Hopefully they will send out another cop and the second one they sent out was so much nicer and cooler than the first one who was acting all hyped up and weird ... The first cop gave me the impression he shouldn't even have been a cop and that he was incompetent and the kind that would escalate things and or do something underhanded

@gardensofthegods this could work in some situations, like safely locked in your vehicle & recording and or got a witness with you, but unfortunately, like in this poor Dudes case, there's usually Not a Great option once u got a cop whose made up his angry lil 🫛🧠 to make your day as fucked as he possibly can, bc it's not a numbers probability dilemma- bc SO many cops are 🐷🐖, u very well may get a 2nd cops who's ALSO a major dick, aggressive or unprofessional/ scary. So now they're both pissy with you wasting their very precious time, for "defying " or "resisting " but what they really mean is disrespecting. But it's probably better than nothing- also ANY time I'm in the truck w/ my Honey driving if we get pulled over or even approached by a cop I immediately get out my phone& record. I wish I'd been doing so when cops knocked on my fro t door out of nowhere & when it was answered by my roommate- barged rit TF in- immediately- despite me loudly but calmly ordering them to leave if they had no warrant (I knew they didn't bc they wouldn't have reason to) we BOTH immediately were arrested when they began going g thru going thru drawers & pulled out a small empty pipe I'd just purchased for my roommate from a street vendor at our city annual biker event. We found out when later released from the police station that they'd knocked on the wrong door- they'd been called to a neighbor's place bc of a loud party. Despite being illegally arrested as there was NO DRUGS & the pipe was legal obviously, & both of us have Zero prior offenses, the prosecutor charged us. Still have that shit on my record. I have 5 other stories just as bad, a couple actually worse, about cops just blatantly not giving a fuck about my rights, or humanity. And I'm a White woman- being Black in the USA is the most terrifying thing I can imagine.

Excellent theory as always, Dr. Grande. What a horrible situation caused by yet another thrill seeking person with terrible judgement. I always think there is a certain arrogance in these people as well. Like everyone should recognize and respect their authority even though as you pointed out, this particular police officer was not dressed as one nor did he even attempt to identify himself as one. Though, as a woman, if I was alone and having car trouble and was approached by a man in a big white van who didn't show me a badge and wasn't in a cop car or uniform- I would have been terrified. Even if he did try to tell me he was police I would have remained skeptical. No matter who Raja approached this way, he was probably going to scare them but he didn't care.

Maddie , as a woman alone on a back road one night when I got lost coming out of a supermarket I'd never been to before I did end up calling 911 on the police officer who pulled me over . He was too hyped up and something just wasn't right with him and I had no confidence in him . I told this to 911 and they immediately sent another officer who was way nicer and cooler than him . The first cop that was there was the kind that ends up escalating things and you end up seeing in the news like this for creating tragedies . The other cop didn't like him and I know this because when he was standing on the other side of my car leaning in the window he said " Ma'am , you can also file a complaint about him " and he was nodding and making his eyes real big like yes please do and handed me his own card and told me again the name of the other officer . So if ever you get stopped by a cop and you don't feel something is right yes you can call 911 on him and ask for another officer and just calmly tell them why you don't have confidence in him or why you feel he might not even be a real cop .

Most were pleasant because I always followed their instructions but a few were almost near death experiences. Springfield Missouri, Case: Officer Schuck Overview: Officer shoots mentally ill young man in the back several times for panhandling outside a Walmart. He claimed that when he went to arrest the panhandling kid (by smashing his face into a concrete wall and slamming him to the ground, the kid ran away. Schuck claims he thought he drew his tazer.....the kid was WELL OUT OF range for the tazer, but actually he drew his weapon (kept on the opposite hip as the tazer and fired 6-7 times (another thing a tazer csnt do) he blasted the kids internal orga.s out and left him in critical condition for weeks. The Officer was charged with COMMON ASSAULT and fired. He is the same Officer who Said to me, "man, I am just tichimg for you to give me half a reason to end you." He moved from the area due to his inability to get a job anywhere after that. I did confront the former Officer after he wasn't a cop any.ore and he called 911 on me.....LMAO. The police dispatch wouldn't send an officer and told him to "work it out"......😝 Just a case from my perspective.

Recently I've been doubting how many good cops there actually are. They seem extremely reluctant to release evidence, such as with the shooting of Daniel Shaver (they didn't release body cam footage until AFTER the court found the shooter innocent) and with the Uvalde shooting where the department has been thouroughly uncooperative with investigators. If there were more good cops than bad, wouldn't the bad ones not have so much support?

The state can punish individual officers who are reckless, incompetent or badly trained. This will not prevent another tragedy like that of Corey Jones. More expansive changes are needed. The fact that previous errors in judgement by this officer did not automatically result in additional training before the officer could resume duties is a defect in this police department. Following official procedure is probably something that a first year cadet learns and should remember. Obviously not this particular former officer whose status now is that of a convicted criminal.

As long as we are willing to ignore the motivation of people to become police officers we will experience this behavior. In my experience people who become police officers are generally from two camps. Either they were bullied and felt powerless in their lives, so they sought power in the badge and gun. Or they were bullies themselves and were seeking the power of the badge and gun. Of course, there are members of law enforcement that joined for the right reasons. But they are outnumbered by bullies trained by bullies. And here we are.

I live in the UK and got into a row with an undercover police officer in early hours of the morning because he started chasing me in an unmarked car..I thought he was some nut trying to randomly attack me at night and so we chased round and round for quite a while before we both got out of our cars and squared up to each other..only then did he produce ID...no charges were filed and anyway I told him I'd be insisting they played their camera footage which would show them provoking me. If this was in the USA and we both carried guns it could have turned out very badly.

There's a case in Denmark right now where a healthcare worker is accused and jailed for 1 case of homicide and 3 cases of attempted homicide, on the elderly people she was supposed to care for at the carehome where they lived abs she worked. They were supposedly drugged with benzodiazepines, which the woman also had taken home with her. she was not supposed to handle medicine at all. Interesting and frightening at the same time. It sounds similar to other cases that you have covered, I would like your thoughts on it. Not much has come out yet though, as the courts have sealed everything for now. There has been a similar case in Denmark not many years ago, wherein a nurse was convicted of killing several patients.
