It's very interesting to hear a singer use their voice in a totally different way when singing, as apposed to when they speak. This was certainly the case with Sam Cieri on AGT recently. In this video I'll tell you what I think about it - but, what do YOU think?

I have to disagree. His awkward behavior is adorable. He’s nervous and it’s genuine. He WAS emotional. When he was singing he was feeling it SO much and it was actually really nice to see. It was authentic and real…NOT a fake performance. That’s why people like him and why most disagree with you here. His hand movements are going with what he’s feeling and what the song is saying.

Most people connected with the song and the way he delivered it. Personally I was entranced by the song. The voice he chosed for this song fitted just well. You expected a performance while he was just singing at AGT, on TV, in front of this big crowd and jury. The man was just nervous and shy but still delivered the emotions of the song just right. I completely understand the thumbs up he did. And seriously it just made him even more cute and likeable for me.

I’m blown away by your critique! 😳I was also shocked at first to hear his speaking voice was completely different than his singing voice. I didn’t know people could do that. But maybe it’s not intentional? Maybe some people just have something different about their vocal cords that make them sing like that? Anyway, that’s not what blew me away. All his songs sound like that and his emotion is real and raw. I love Nicotine Dolls! Sam is the best male vocalist of his time. Also I thought the thumbs up was cute and made him way more sexy. So I completely disagree with you there.

I think before anyone judges his amazing voice you need to look at his career, he was the lead in Rock of Ages on Norwegian, 7 nights a week and the lead in ONCE for almost 2 years- it's how he always sings and has since he started. Part of the neck movement is from the emotion he puts into it. That is his voice,

I loved it and after watching his music videos and reading the bio of his career I'm not loving this critique. While I understand the concern for his singing style being detrimental to his vocal cords might be the first thing a teacher thinks about, the critique of his awkwardness when he finished the song was uncalled for. He was auditioning and despite his wonderful performance he may have still actually been nervous.

I love Sam's voice, but this guy's critique is not that far off. Listen to Nicotine Doll's song The Maddness. That is, or at least closer to Sam's natural voice. Straining like that is also not good for your vocal cords over long periods of time.

@rgalleyCA_01123 The Madness is only one song. Great song but only one. They have tons of great work. It's Sam's vocal range. He sings so many different bodies of work including what they have written. As people age, voices change. He's also a smoker which deepens the raspy sound.

I think this analysis explains why Sam is a an amazing singer with a huge following and this guy talking about him is a voice coach. It's the difference between being able to do something, and being able to talk about doing something, but not really having a clue. I felt the energy and emotion through a screen, I hope he doesn't hurt his voice, but I wouldn't want to hear him singing any other way, this was pure and beautiful just the way it was.

Guys here me out, please really try to listen to what he's saying before disagreeing. He isn't saying this guy isn't going to be a superstar, he said the man is clearly musically gifted but he has concerns about his voice being forced and the longevity of him being able to maintain that sound with the clear neck tension he has going on. Valid points, and what you should expect from a critique channel. He repeatedly made a point to say many singers can maintain it and can do fantastic but his role is be real and critique so that is what he did. He isn't going to be a tik Tok echo chamber collecting views by just repeating and confirming how great Sam is. That is, in fact not helpful to Sam at all. He literally points out "how can I say it is wrong" people love him, he is just concerned about his voice, but still finishes it off with how special he is just like the rest of you. Be grateful there are people out here who can give real critiques and share their opinions without the opinions of the mass public interfering. This video is a reason to subscribe, not run away. That said, I just found Sam Cieri today, and going through his music, my God... We haven't had somebody with a voice like this in the industry for a long time. This vocal sound has been lost since the 80s and I feel we found it again in Sam, just a true gem and I'm buying whatever he puts out. The song he sang was an original he wrote, and it's incredible.

He has that raspy voice like Bryan Adams Rod Stewart and many others and they had long amazing careers. Myself I switch genres singing and each one you need a different type of singing. I think this guy could sing any way he wants in alot of genres and do amazing. The vocal cord strain isn't as bad as you think. I've been singing metal since I was 15 but I can still do r&b and pop. Great commentary, a lot of analysis I hadn't thought of (but then I'm not a vocal coach). One thing I don't think you mentioned is the facial contortions when he was singing. When Sam spoke to the judges, he had an open smiling face, he looked quite handsome, and had a bit of a Kennedy vibe. When he began singing, he contorted his face and it was *really* unattractive. And yes, the thumbs up at the start and at the end was bizarre and it did jolt me out of the moment. Sure, every song is a performance but when you switch off the emotion like you're flicking a light switch, you're basically signalling to the audience that you were faking it.

He understands the key thing. If you want me to listen, take me on an emotional journey. I connected with the song and the way it was delivered. If you want to win competitions, and sing perfectly, you don't need me for that. I have no interest in a performer who is trying to win a competition. As a listener, I am not needed for that. There are literally thousands of people that can do that. They all sound alike, and despite their talent, they are boring and forgettable.

He is being authentic when his voice changes. He is in touch with his emotions. He is an artist, expressing his rawness. He's awkward. The smile at the end is humbleness and closing the door on the vulnerability He showed us. He is NOT a professional vocalist nor is it a staged performance. In his other music, he easily and spontaneously weaves through the melody,, with great control in his voice and musical acumen. If you were looking for a trained, professional vocalist you would indeed be disappointed.

Beautiful combination of rock and sweet . I don’t know how to put it in words. His voice is just absolutely beautiful the way it is. Without changing anything or any techniques. And the 👍👍 that he does at the end, I think is adorable. He looks very humble and sweet . He was being himself. I am 100% sure that in a show , in a concert He doesn’t do that, He did it there because it was an audition, and he was being himself . As a person that love music and sings too. I am in love of His unique and beautiful voice. I won’t change anything.

Some People know how to read others. Sam is unapologetic real and unique. Who cares about his neck muscles and how he uses it. Sam has a beautiful real authentic sound! Also when he goes up on his falsetto his voice is so beautiful. Before you criticize him know and understand his vocal range. Your only judging him on this short clip. Listen to his other songs because he can sing in other vocal range and it is beautiful. Some people are quirky and unique and in Sam case it’s what separate him from the rest. He was the only authentic person on AGT. He should have won! Best talent of that year. SC is special. Best singer in the market now in 2023. Keep being you SC! Don’t change. 🎥👏🎶❤️🙏👍🌟

He’s a performer. He’s performing. The slurring, lisp, is an affect. It annoyed me but I like the performance as a whole. He’s made his voice diffèrent, unique, it’s contrived.. but it works.

Sam is tongue tied and works very hard on his enunciation, medically he cannot have it fixed. I am his Mom I know. It's not a slurring lisp, and his voice is his not contrived- but happy you liked it!

@@BreaC49 interesting. Thanks for clarifying that. Seemed like when he was speaking he was clear then it changed with his performance so made me think it was intentional. There are so many techniques that singers employ to sound different I figured that was his!

I disagree. I heard him sing before I heard him speak and was immediately captivated. There's so much emotion in his voice. I had to fight breaking into tears. His singing and sound off his voice is extremely moving. It appears you're too caught up on his performance and audience reaction having too much production involvement. I feel like it's majority genuine reaction. Notice the pause at the end before the audience applauded? I too hesitated because I was waiting for more. Yearning for more. This man speaks to my soul as if his singing touches every damaged part of me. The only reason I came upon your reaction video was bc I was searching from more and happen to like watching reaction videos. Your video is the first I've actually heard his speaking voice. One thing I've gotten from this video is to avoid watching others from you. Nothing personal, I just feel like I won't agree with your insights soully to this one being so off point.

Interesting observation. I also noticed his neck veins. I think his voice is very different, very good in a way. Thanks for your perspective. With the thumbs at the end. He was just thanking the audience and Simon, who first put his thumb up for him.

Greetings from Germany. You are absolutely right when you say that it is more tangible when the spoken voice matches the singing. But he is charming and sings with feeling. Can you top it?

Yes, I thought of all that when I first heard Sam sing. I thought he was definitely a mystery because of his talking voice and his singing voice. But, watching some of his old videos, he seemed authentic all the way through. I am glad to you gave him a tip about holding the illusion until the audience let it go, as well.

"I don't love when people sound so different when they sing, as opposed to when they speak"... Ok bud. You're opinion lost it's merit with me on that note. It's your opinion, and you're free to hold it, but I strongly disagree.

Sam is an amazing performer and one of the very best I’ve heard live. No auto tune needed. He has a raw unbridled talent. Often he has the ability to send chills through the entire crowd at a show. He is actually most impressive.

For all the subs on this channel start questioning why you are all subscribed to this channel. Singing voice and talking voice can really be different on how your technique is, but you trained and how you exercise your vocals.

Hardly anyone expected your analysis. She is interesting and your observations are based on experience. - However, when Sam sings, he puts his heart and soul (and body) into his voice. He wants to sound the same because it only fills him that way. Sam will notice when it gets too strenuous in a few years. It will surely go well! 😉👍

I am no expert on music but my first thought when I heard him sing was it was a fake voice or style of singing, like it was contrived. I also thought he was really straining. interesting that this coach had the exact reaction.

most of his songs sound like that. but there are a few where he chooses to not do that "bolten" voice. and he does it quite well. and clearly easily. i think he chooses to mainly sing like that because i think he has way way way more to give the world musicly.

He has an amazing voice but he already knew that when he came on the show so he does what every other singer does and pretend to be shy when really he's been doing this for ages everybody knows you have to be humble on America's Got Talent they don't like anybody who's cocky. Well played

I've been in the AGT audience twice in New York City and I believe this audience's reactions to be true and not edited in from other episodes. He's awesome and quitting because they tried to break up his band is even more admirable.

Agreed. I loved his audition so much that i checked his music outside of AGT. What i found out is that - without being anything more than an honest fan, after a few continuous songs it all started to sound monotonous. That grainy voice that made me love him instantly, became too much of a good thing. A little variation, used with purpose, would give his music so much richness! And... If it will futhermore allow him to sustain a career in music, then even better!!!! We will have Mr. Cieri for a long time!

I loved his voice! So real and honest. I don’t think I could say any singer who sings “like they talk?”””” Really? And his little thumbs up gesture…that was nerves, I think - probably biggest audience he’s been in front of, and they were there to judge him! Give the guy a break from that comment - that is something he can change.
