Part 3 in the series of scrummage clinics. This video focuses on building the back 5 and completing the buildup of a full scrummage looking to secure their own feed, it will feature the formation being put under pressure by a hydraulic scrummage machine.

Old habits die hard, in the sequence against the hydraulic machine at the end I still referred to the engagement phase as a hit, need to remind myself to refer to the engagement to stay in line with the new initiatives. Hopefully you will clearly see that the scrum is not in any de-powered at this 1st phase transition of the engagement and we can generate a considerable force in the next transition referred to as the squeeze, also creating an increased pressure in the snap or hold position

They are hitting the engagement phase very hard. The refs I have had have neutralised the hit altogether and the engage is much gentler. The engagement sequence is slower so by when the ball comes in the scrums are having to hold off the weight to keep the scrum steady. If this continues throughout the season then how do you suggest that the explosive drive is generated.A trigger from the hooker and or flanker when the ball is in is essential but how do you best change from holding off to firing?

The referee's interpretation will be key, I am seeing coaches still using a call of numbers after the referees engage which suggests they are driving through the engagement chasing their feet, I would hope the referees take the opportunity to insist on one movement and a hold, we will see the Argentina bajadita type technique which refers to the little squeeze & snap shove, instigated by the sight of the ball in the channel, flanker or loose head prop ideally can instigate this call & snap shove

I have a document that was shared with me studying the technique of the Argentina bajadita technique of scrummaging, I will share this document in the popular visualperformanceanalysis com blog webpage

good discussion but think it might work better as a video if the coach shows the scrum in operation first then breaks it down

We are also using a call of numbers followed by a squeeze in practice but in reality the refs are not allowing this so stop the big hit and chase after a couple of scrums. Then it becomes a flop and hold. We are trying to counter this by squeezing and dipping but it is hard to explode when you are almost holding the weight off. Any tips?

One of the most pathetic and miserable things I've seen in all sports is our front row scrum engagement. We have the hooker bound on top of the props : That needs to be reversed ; per law 20.3 b. Hooker should take the supportive UNDER bind, not the props. This should have been changed many, many years ago.
