Andrew Sheridan was a Loosehead Prop who played for England and the British and Irish Lions. At 6ft 5 inches tall, Sheridan was unusually tall for a Prop, and he was known for his immense physical strength, which made him a formidable scrummager. His career was hampered by injury problems, but he still managed to win 40 caps for England and played in 2 British and Irish Lions tours, winning 2 test caps in the 2009 tour to South Africa, playing in the 2nd and 3rd tests.

You know someone is a beast when the south african forwards are like he was "an absolute monster". Sheridan is in top 0.1% of strongest rugby players ever.

It still surprises me that they didn’t take him to Australia for the lion tours in 2013. At the time he was dominating the Top 14 and kept Gethin Jenkins on the bench! Plus if there’s one man to destroy the wallaby scrum it’s Sheridan

As a Welshman I loved Gethin Jenkins. Really amazing, world class rugby player. But in my view, Sheridan should have been the Lions first choice test match loose-head on the 2009 tour. I dont think South Africans fear anyone, but they were definitely wary about Sheridan's set piece prowess, and insane strength and power. Given that John Smit was playing tight-head at that time, putting in Sheridan to scrum against him, and most likely dominate him, would have been a BIG problem for South Africa.

Just before that 2007 World Cup game against Australia, think it was the Autumn Internationals 2006 he absolutely destroyed Australia, more so than in the RWC game. Brilliant. South Africa just about nullified him in the final, although if refereed with modern standards around the scrum, England would no doubt have been given more penalties in that area.

The thing about Sheridan is that he doesn't look particularly enormous stood next to his rugby peers; he was just an Olympic standard power lifter and highly skilled at directing that power.

Awesome tribute video. Sheri was a legend, a true destroyer of worlds. Watching the Lions clips from '09, I am reminded of just how incredible that series was and how incredible that Lions team. was. I still can't believe the Boks beat us. Given the calibre of the team the Lions took, I think in hindsight that John Smit's greatest achievement was perhaps not the RWC win, but the Lions series victory.

@DRM1891
@DRM1891 Жыл бұрын
@@Waywind420 I agree that he was a pest - but he didn’t get the nickname ‘Enforcer’ for nothing. He was a real solid forward, especially in the right areas. Tackling, rucking, mauling, ball carrying. He was a real powerhouse.
@Waywind420
@Waywind420 Жыл бұрын
@@DRM1891 I guess I didn't word it correctly. Bakkies was strong, and scrappy. But there were plenty of other forwards around that time who would have been just as strong or even stronger, but few were as scrappy as him. Imagine if someone like Jerry collins was more abrasive, rather than a humble player.
@DRM1891
@DRM1891 Жыл бұрын
@@Waywind420 yes I see what you mean. Bakkies didn’t seem to mind or care about his dirty antics being so visible. I guess as well as being a strong rugby player, he also loved pushing the boundaries and trying to intimidate opposition players. You’re right, if Jerry Collins played in the same way that Bakkies did he could have had a similar legacy. Collins was incredible. I loved him. He was so physical and some of his hits were out of this world. But from what I ever saw from him, he was hard but fair. I don’t recall his discipline being an issue like Bakkies’ was. But I guess there’s a place for all kinds of characters in every too team!
