I never watched Ginger until recently. It really IS an underrated gem. Calm, cozy, grounded and sensitive, a rare find in cartoons! It’s more emotionally mature than half the tween/teen stuff I’ve watched when I was younger. I’m glad it’s getting recognition.

I appreciate how much effort you put into this episode. Not only was the music you put in the background fun to hear, but the analysis itself was great to go through. I can't wait to hear more of your analysis of this series and to see where it goes. The photoshop edits of Sasha was awesome too. It perfectly encapsulates his attitude toward Ginger. Ginger didn't deserve what Sasha was doing to her.

I knew we'd see this show again today. I honestly really feel that seeing the darkness of the show really hits close to home, it might even be a kids version of Bojack Horseman due to how real and nuanced the conversations and situations re, not to mention the talent of the voice acting. I even love how this season ends, the voice actress for Carl's teacher passed away last minute so they rewrote the story as a "shaggy dog story" for Carl, as it rendered his attempts to win her back for the class useless, it's a common theme for life, sometimes big efforts will not matter ultimately. Thanks for continuing this, but I know S3 may be a bit of a slog due to the inevitable cruelty.

I don't know if you noticed this, Shawn. Well, it's more of a blink if you miss it moment. But after Miranda breaks up with Darren, you can see hear changing her hair from the pigtails to the ponytail as she's walking away with Courtney. At first, I thought the pigtails was just Miranda changing her hair. But, I now realize it was Miranda trying to appeal more to Darren i.e making herself more cute with the pigtails. She seems to have a very surface-level understanding to how romantic relationships work. Like, only having time for your significant other, or eventually getting into fights, or changing your appearance for your significant other. Darren also does this when he side-parts his hair.
@DuskTillShawn
@DuskTillShawn Ай бұрын
Oh, man that's such a subtle thing but you're 100% spot on! I totally didn't notice that. I definitely caught Darren and his whole parting the hair conundrum when he attempted to ask Ginger about it. I didn't notice Miranda and her pigtails though lol. Good eye, my friend! :D

First off!! Thank you, Shawn, for another banger video! I am genuinely so excited for each of the videos you post because these thoughts and reflections of these shows I grew up with are so well vocalized! Like 80% of the things you say in your videos are true/similar to the things I thought when I watched these episodes. So I'm very glad to be a part of this channel and community! And now second off! I think when Courtney says "I hope Ginger doesn't take it personally." That she was saying it in a more nuetral way so it wouldn't upset Miranda, but it also wouldn't put a negative emphasis on how Courtney believes Ginger will act to Miranda and Darren dating. I think that in more personal conversations with Courtney, she acts more nuetral than positive. This would make her character able to develop more for the progression of her friendships with everyone as time goes on in the series.

I needed this today more than anything, it's actually kind of cathartic. Especially that last episode. See, I found this guy. He was handsome, famous, funny, intelligent, someone I considered out of my league and would've given anything to be with. I was there for him when he needed me, never expecting he'd actually come to America...then he did. I said I'd show him around my city. So I took him out for tea, and to the Museum and we hit it off...at least I thought we did. He was coming on to me and I realized I had feelings for him and he made it seem like it was the same. He embarked on another adventure, but said he'd be back and he was true to his word. It felt like a fairy tale, even slow danced with him in my friend's driveway in the snow. Then one night he gets drunk and seems like he's in trouble, I offered to go there or pay for a lyft to get him out, he begins crying about how much I cared for him. From there, I was willing to pack up and leave with him. Then as soon as he left, he told me he found another guy. I felt rejected, but like a lovesick puppy, I held onto some hope that we'd be together. It didn't last long, claimed the relationship was toxic. Then he posts a video saying he found another guy, claims it wasn't anything, just something for the camera. He then goes through a rough patch, a REALLY rough patch, I was there for him, I listened to his sorrows, I offered to help him out of it. I was there for him and he claimed he'd be coming back in February. Then he posts last night he found the person of his dreams and I tried to be happy for him, but I can't help but feel sick. I guess there's some solace in seeing this analsys because it kind of helps remind me life is complex, full with emotion, and I'm not really alone. Anyway thank you for this. Doesn't take away those emotions, but kind of puts it in perspective.
@Sanakudou
@Sanakudou 4 күн бұрын
I know I’m replying a month since you wrote this, but this guy is truly awful and undeserving of you. Handsome, famous, funny and intelligent, none of those are characteristics that determine whether someone qualifies as a good romantic partner, how someone treats you is the number one criteria to judge whether they’re deserving of a relationship with you, this guy fails to meet that criteria. You’ve described all the ways YOU have been an amazing partner to him, but not once were you able to describe him reciprocating, he is knowingly using you whenever it suits him and discarding you whenever he finds someone else he wants to use instead yet stringing you along so he can always have the opportunity to use and discard you all over again. All these “rough patches” he divulges to you are very conscious attempts at emotionally manipulating you, he’s equally as intentional with how he keeps telling you about these other romantic partners in order to make you jealous. This guy isn’t your dream man, he’s not even your friend, he’s a selfish manipulator who is wasting your time and energy, your life will be so much better if you cut him out of it completely. I sincerely mean that, the best thing you could do for yourself is to block him and never speak to him again. Also, I highly recommend you read a book called “why does he do that”, google search it and you’ll find a pdf for free, there’s plenty of articles and even KZbin videos summaries of it too if you prefer. Not only does it help teach you all the various things that qualify as manipulative or abusive so you can better vet potential partners but it also breaks down the “why” behind these tactics. Lovebombing, bread crumbing, future faking, trauma dumping/trauma bonding, jealousy baiting, all of those are tactics you’ve described him doing, they’re all tactics this book gives detailed information on. Learning about them will allow you to make a more objective judgement on how he treats you, which will help you realise he isn’t the person or partner you wanted him to be, enabling you to walk away with certainty that there isn’t and never will be a future with him.

I am SO EXCITED for Part Two! You just don’t even know ❤ I’m at the 55:29 mark. I must say, hearing the word narcissism thrown out to describe a young teen boy who’s been compared out to his older brother, underestimated due to corrective dental mechanics(?), bullied and learning how to manage his teenage feelings is harsh. Darren is young and hearing that the person you’ve had a crush on since before WiFi talks about you in therapy must feel good to him. That’s not narcissistic. That’s being a teenager. As someone who dated a person diagnosed NPD, this word (narcissistic) is thrown around as a blanket statement without exploring the nuances of other words. Darren was being prideful or self-centered but narcissistic…I don’t believe so. I wish these pop culture psych terms weren’t so prevalent and misused. This is not a judgement on you. I’ve been working through that relationship and your channel has helped me when I needed a lifeline. You are such a comfort and I feel safe to share that dark time with you. Have a wonderful day!

Of course the specifics of the problems that happened, harm committed, etc. are very much not Nickelodeon-friendly but regardless this show is a huge vibe and I see why I was a fan of it when I was in middle school, being just the right age for it.

I hated Dodie so much growing up that the hatred was what stuck with me most from the series. A few years back I saw someone else make a video on As Told By Ginger and couldn't remember much past the theme song until a wash of hate emerged from the lower chambers of my brain, everything else flooding in after.

Well you’re not the only one it resonates with. I still remember getting my contacts and ditching my glasses for the first time. I was going into 8th grade. For the past 5 years, I looked like the dorky kid from, Boy Meets World. The second I could see straight without those big goggles on my face, I felt 10 lbs lighter and instantly more confident with how I looked. The difference is, while my classmates certainly noticed, they didn’t treat me any different at first. Like the first few months into the year, it was no different from last year. Still got bullied, still got laughed at, still criticized, still left out. What did change eventually was how some girl acted around me. I didn’t really know anyone out side my grade, having grown up with the same classmates year after year, at the school I went to you didn’t interact with any other grade til you got to 7th grade where you interact with 8th grade and 8th grade interacts with 7th grade. And in this 7th grade class were some very pretty girls I never knew. They were actually prettier than the girls in my grade. They started saying hit to me in the morning, smiling at me when we’d pass in the hallways, and not so subtly passing me and my friends by during recess. Having been bullied most of my life, I didn’t really know how to respond to this kind of attention. I could tell one girl in particular from the 7th grade class liked me a lot, even asking me to dance with her during the Valentine’s Day dance. That was a night I’ve been wishing I could relive for years now. The first(and last until further notice)time a pretty girl actually chose me. This wasn’t my first dance with a girl, but it was the first time it was with a girl I liked who actually chose me. No one made her ask me, it wasn’t a joke or a set up, this was the real deal. For once, I felt good about myself. I was happy to be me. I just…didn’t know how to tell her I liked her too. So junior High ended, i went to high school and even though we went to high school together, by then she forgot about me. I wish I could go back and tell that girl how I really felt. How she made my last year in junior high bearable. She really made me look at myself in a new perspective. I’ve struggled with confidence even to this day, but remembering I attracted someone pretty like her once before reminds me that I’m not a complete lost cause. In fact, rewatching this show makes me think about her a lot cause I watched it a lot during that year. I’ve said it before. Junior high really can be the worst years of your life. What with puberty, dances, and all the changes it entails for kids. Not to mention that there are kids like Miranda out there looking to drag you down cause there’s something about you that they can’t stand. And it’s only now years later do I see why they were especially mean to me 8th grade, it’s cause they were afraid of me. They were afraid I was going to see how attractive I’ve become and the girls while like the more confident me and that would’ve taken the spotlight off them. That’s the reason why any bully is the way they are, they are secretly afraid of you and aren’t expecting you to stand firm and show them you aren’t afraid of them. I unfortunately didn’t see that at the time and the bullying took its toll on my self confidence. I’m getting better, but I’m still shy and struggle to talk to women. My advice to anyone who has kids, when they get to junior high age, make you prepare them for bullies and whatnot cause they are going to encounter them! Make sure they aren’t hiding the pain like I did. It will mess them up later in life. Make sure they aren’t intimidated by someone liking them, because if they don’t get used to that feeling, they’re never going to know when it’s genuine. It’s too late for me, but there’s still time for them!

@@oooh19I couldn’t agree more, I’ve thought about it endlessly about why they would be this way. Maybe they don’t get attention at home, so acting up in school like this gets them attention they want, so maybe that’s why. But I’ve met the parents of some of them, they seemed normal. Well maybe it’s just like you said, they get their kicks from putting ppl down, I don’t see how you can find enjoyment in seeing someone else hurt or left out but they did. Everything is stronger in numbers and when it was randomly chosen to support the mean kid who picks on certain ppl cause what he says is funny to them, the numbers in their support grows and the numbers that defend the victim diminishes. No one wants to be know as the one who defends the picked on kid cause then that means you either have a crush on them or you’re gay for them so they’re alone even tho some wish they could help but they know they can’t. Everyone, especially at the school I went to wanted to be included in the “in crowd”. The ones who were talked to, liked by the girls, invited to the parties, and just included in everything. I was never part of that crowd, but ppl from that crowd started to talk to me 8th grade. Maybe cause it was out last year there and they had nothing to lose by then or maybe they liked my new look, idk. I wish I could relive those days and talk to those ppl the way they deserved to be talked to cause honestly, they weren’t intimidating physically speaking, some were really shorter than me. But honestly I don’t think about them a lot, they went on with their lives and I never had to deal with them again and that’s just how I like it.

@@angel_in-blackanyone can be bullied or a bully. It’s not always the popular kids or the huge kids. A lot of times it’s class clowns who use their classmates for material like it’s mean spirited humor. Many teachers are no help either a lot of adults suck too. It’s good we don’t need to deal with many people who went to school with us anymore. Also I had a kid on my bus who was a couple grades below me who was bullied for his intelligence maybe the classmates were jealous but some could be jerks who enjoy bothering people. And some classmates who were friends ended their friendships due to a new girl stirring the pot. And some people I went to high school with were wealthy and made sure everyone knew it so they thought they were better due to their privilege
@angel_in-black
@angel_in-black Ай бұрын
@ yes cruelty is not restricted to any age, size, or any motivation behind it. It’s funny cause I’ve had a dealings with 2 separate guys I went to school with. One started out as my friend, we did everything together for a year, then the “cool kids” got to him and said he could hang out with them, he just had to be mean to me since that was their tradition. He didn’t even have to think about it, he instantly acted like the two of us were never friends! Still haven’t forgotten how that made me feel and I don’t think I’ll ever forgive him for that. And I went to school with another guy who wasn’t a bully, he got picked on too, but he was also really mean to me and it’s rare we went a week with out an argument. For 8 years we couldn’t stand each other, then we went to high school, we made some new mutual friends, started spending more time together, and we asked each other what were we actually fighting about? In short, nothing so we put the past behind us, and now to this day he’s a good friend of mine. It is funny to have a friend you used to hate, we’ve joked about it many times. But that just proves I’m capable of getting along with anyone! If I was ever approached by any of my old bullies and they came to me all remorseful and asked me to forgive them, I’d hug em and tell them absolutely, but you know as well as I do that’s never gonna happen, and that’s ok. I’m not a sick individual that wishes bad things on ppl who used to be mean to me. Having worked at a school for awhile I’ve seen how they are these days and while some things never change, it’s very different from when I was a kid and they seem more “tolerant” of each other. I’d love to have given them a lecture about how important it is to be kind to each other and how bullying isn’t cool.

When you were talking about how Macy thought that Ginger only wanted attention from 10th grade boys really underlines the Cinderella mention earlier in the episode. Cinderella is often misinterpreted as her going to the ball to find primce charming, but she just wanted to go to the ball period. She wanted a night off and to feel special. Ginger just wanted people to not think of her as sone innocent kid. Good eye!

I loved as told by ginger. It was funny but felt wholesome. The last season or two when they went to high school happened in a blur for me, but the drama with Darren, breaking up, and ginger just so happens to get appendicitis right after was brutal, especially to see Ginger heartbroken over her childhood friend turned first boyfriend breaking up with her while admitting he fell for someone else. It’s hard for me to watch that last season. But I watch the finale special. Lois Foutley is one of the best animated tv moms

Yesss I'm so obsessed. I never got to enjoy watching it like I did Rugrats growing up and honestly watching your videos shows what a shame it was that I missed out. I was born in 1999 and had two way older siblings, so I was able to enjoy the remnants of the 90s from VHS and their toys and books. Strangely enough when 2013 rolled around I found something similar. I was able to really sink my teeth into cartoons that had real messages for the kids thanks to Steven Universe, adventure time in mid to late seasons, and of course from then on we've had so many other great entries! I love Amphibia and The Owl House to pieces! It makes me so happy that even in the 90s Ginger was paving the way for some of my AND my nieces and nephews favorite shows. It makes me even happier to know that kids my sisters age have As told by Ginger just like I have Steven Universe and Gravity Falls ❤️
