Maybe or maybe I think that the ending was meant to be an artistic representation in itself ( I am an Atheist so I will not admit that Jack actually went to hell ) more so my take away was that Jack himself was obviously a dilutional almost full blown Schizophrenic at times throughout his career and Verge ( his guide ) was merely a persistent manifestation of his mental illness. I came to believe that basically the last hour or so of Jacks life was a very bad schizoid acid trip ( if you've never had a bad acid trip yourself it isn't a far fetch to compare it to Biblical Hell, trust me on this subject I have experience) before the police eventually shot & killed him where he stood.

The most important thing is that Jack is a stand in for how Lars Von Trier fears he sees himself, as a pretentious , cruel and potentially irredeemable artist. The disgust Lars makes you feel about jack is the disgust he sees in himself, Many of the events stand in as excellent albeit, twisted metaphors for Lars’ directorial career and personal life. The ending implies that He fears he is in a hell of his own making, and no one will truly understand him, and he is doomed. his serial killing as an art, reflects Lars’ directorial career as a provocateur. He sees genuine art in his films, but also wrestles with the mainstream perception of them. He wants to provoke, he wants to be accepted as an artist, but he wrestles with the idea that he must stay true and honest to his own artistic Ideals.
@tannerpickle2 жыл бұрын
Very well said. It was clear when he showed footage from his other films at the end that to some extent this was about the artist's struggle. That's partly why I enjoy his films so much. I have to say that this movie was refreshing in that it allowed Jack to be a quintessential study of a serial killer. Often times when a serial killer is a center character they have to doll him up to be relatable or have him adhere to a modern movie trope so you don't hate him. I disagree with one thing; Jack is not intelligent. His home comes across as such, but it is merely *organized.* When you look at the actual *things* he's doing, like his architecture project, he's actually absurdly simplistic and slow in the design and construction of his house. Part of this can, indeed, be attributed to his OCD, but from a fundamental level, and coming from someone who knows several architects, I think Jack is intentionally being portrayed as a very, very bad architect to those with a keen eye.

I think Jack is definitely intelligent or at least above average. He is assumedly a somewhat successful engineer. He seems cultured in regards to art and philosophy and feels comfortable enough to challenge them in an admittedly very twisted way. I think the reason Jack has so much trouble building his house is because for him its his most precious art piece. Its become so abstracted in his mind that it is elevated beyond his capabilities. He struggles with choosing the material because he always finds a reason why that material isn’t worthy. As for the quality of his architecture I do think it’s intended to be criticized just like the rest of his art.

One thing about this movie and others like it truly terrify me, and that is the notion that there are far more people in the world who suffer from the same conditions, feelings, and impulses that Jack does than we realise, and it has always been this way, but we are now only more acutely aware of it because modern society, its technology, and societal awareness has made killing someone and getting away with it so difficult the only avenue these people can take to satisfy their urges is by killing a bunch of people at once instead of one at a time, which is possibly the reason we see just so many mass shootings today. A terrifying thought that people like that have always been around it, its just now they have no where to hide, so they have to go to extremes.

Jack's level of emotion is that of someone who never had a normal life and his OCD was at first unknown to him but after time passes he becomes aware of it and he learned after his kill. Jack saw himself as an artist and his form of art is inspired by several artists that has a dark tone(at least a few of them). His need to build "his house" was from the bones of his victims for that in his mind is his legacy and it is a dark one and a serial killer of his level is one of someone who sees himself as an artist with the mindset of seeing the predator and the prey as a platform for his goal to build his house out of the bodies of those he killed. But as time passes and more he kills the more you see that his house is not a heaven but a hell of his own making.

Excellent video on this character by The Vile Eye. You do a hell of a job breaking down on these movie villains. Would like to see one with Frank Zito from Maniac (1980 original). Krug Stillo and his gang from the original Last House on the Left and Henry from Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer.

I'd crack that episode open like the shinbone of an antelope. I'd find it right lively. I'd have it declaimed naked from the walls in the old epic mode. I'd see it reflected in my innermost self. The ultimate video,awaiting the ultimate witness... Etc etc lol

Best thing about this movie is that it tells you exactly what Jack is in the first ten minutes. He is a Jack, a tool, a broken one good only to kill.

This is overall an excellent analysis and I really enjoyed it. However, as someone that suffers from severe OCD, I found your description of the illness to be reductive. I know that you stated that the illness can affect people differently, but tidiness and a rigid structure to one's life is a trope that is not really reflective of the actual illness. The rigidity that those with OCD experience is not related to the way they organize their surroundings or schedule their time. The rigidity is in their need to do their compulsions in order to mitigate the extreme anxiety caused by their obsessions. The obsessions are irrational thoughts that usually take the form of outlandish "what if" scenarios that any normal person would be able to immediately write off as nonsense, but due to what now appears to be structural issues in the brain (specifically in the connections between the prefrontal cortex where higher level functions are performed and the error/danger detection center of the brain) OCD sufferers can't. This alleged structural problem in the basal ganglia seems to be the best explanation as to one of the very unique aspects of the illness; the fact that sufferers know their obsessions and subsequent compulsions are completely irrational, but they still can't stop doing them with out experiencing absurd levels of anxiety. Anxiety levels so high that doing something as innocuous as not checking if the front door is locked enough times feels like a life or death situation for someone with that compulsion. Furthermore, excessive tidiness is seldom a sign of the illness, as the amount of time that many people with OCD spend on compulsions causes them to neglect other aspects of their life like cleanliness and personal hygiene. That actually goes to my final point, which is that OCD doesn't cause simple "annoyances and inconveniences". Spending three or more house of your day checking door locks, or washing your hands, or any of the other innumerable compulsions and variations of compulsions that sufferers experience is not an inconvenience, it's absolutely devastating. The amount of time that people with OCD spend on compulsions strain personal relationships, rob them of experiences that would have brought them joy and make holding down a stable job extremely difficult, if not impossible. Finally, the stress experienced by patient's with OCD results in a significantly reduced lifespan. Like I said, overall I think the analysis of the character of Jack was excellent. I just wanted to share my understanding as someone that suffers with this disability.

@Smarterthanyew Жыл бұрын
Psychopathic, NOT psychotic. Psychosis is a condition that causes a break from reality via hallucinations and paranoia, and relates to mental health conditions such as bipolar and schizophrenia. People with these conditions hate how they are confused and conflated with psychopathy, which is a disorder that precludes the ability to feel empathy, leaving sufferers callous, cold, antisocial, manipulative and in many cases, for want of a better term, evil. The two- psychosis and psychopathy- should not be confused. 😊
