Chris didn‘t get the movie or von Triers intentions. This film is about the conflict between the artist and his work. Is art supposed to be viewed through a moral lens or not? Can the artist be judged appart from his art. The violence is necessary for that particular reason. The narcissistic aspect talked about here is a complete miss as well. Von Trier reflected on his own work and tried to answer if he, by showing us such pictures as presented in this film and in his earlier work, should be held responsible or if we can just accept his work as it is. Jack tries to argue his way out of hell, talking for von Trier, but ultimately fails because the distinction that Jack/von Trier tries to draw between Art and the Artist doesn‘t exist, because once your work is out there you may try to justify it but it will be torn appart by the audience and the critics. I stopped watching chris after this review, because chris doesn’t even understand that by judging this film for its pretentious violence he stumbled exactly into von Triers trap: Von Trier uses the critique of a filmcric to make fun of the critic himself and that shows the limits of chris and his understanding of what movies are about

@@simonmatuschek Additionally, it makes sense for him to include more violence without certain "meaning" when the character is a sociopath with OCD, no? Arguably psychopath, considering his lack of empathy altogether even facing someone the protagonist himself described that he "loved".. Because impulsiveness, lack of remorse and thinking of consequences that are common psychopathic traits, and the obsessive compulsions that come with OCD, you can create situations that only include violence, building the character? If that makes sense? Cause if you have a compulsion to make that lady be quiet(such as in the first occurence in the film) and the lacking ability to think about consequences you depict the character in a sense? Now, it's an extreme depiction of the two mental 'illnesses', don't get me wrong, however, it also does make sense in the film...

I interpreted Von Trier's ego-mania in this film as a reflection on the psychopathy of Jack and his inability to distinguish art from himself. Jack became his art, the art of murder, and in the end that's what drove him to disregard human emotions just like Von Trier's art has lead him to disregard all opinion. The film is about Art being something untamable but to create truly untamed art one must sacrifice their humanity and become the ideas that they represent in their art.

Sounds like a comedian forcing a joke and bombing over and over just because he thinks the joke is funny, I mean if you really believe in the joke go ahead and do it, but at the end of the day, what-s the purpose of that? What are you trying to prove? That you don't give a fuck about anyone-s opinion? That you don't need validation? as a relational being that's just bitterness in my opinion. Almost like an incel vibe. You do art for yourself, sure. But without an audience in mind, just keep it in your home, don't publish it.

@@15minutestoread97 that was actually Norm Macdonalds philosophy when it came to comedy early on. He really didn't care if others found it funny, as long as he thought it was funny. Even if the joke was trash, his delivery and dedication to it somehow made it actually hilarious. He loved the weird reactions to his jokes. The reactions added to his personal entertainment. As for OPs interpretation about Lars and Jack..... what the heck is he talking about. This movie was so slow if I had paid for it I would have stayed but would have wanted to walk out and just finish it later. Took me 3 sittings to get through it all because it got so slow. The only memorable parts were the first kill, the body dragging scene (only that scene not that whole segment), the family segment, and the hell walk scenes. Chris: Wot I think. LvT movies are ultimately supposed to be a feeling or state of mind. Its not really about story. Antichrist is: regret. Melancholia: The title/tiredness from life Nymphomaniac: Sexual arousal both good and bad The house that jack built: Coldness/detachment (for the audience), OCD for the protagonist I watched The house that Jack built today. From the ones listed my favorite one is Antichrist, but LvT movies are extremely hard to watch. They do not fit into our typical narrative mind. LvT might and might not be self aggrandizing, but ultimately he just uses film in a different way. I like his movies because they are usually unique. He makes stuff no one else makes. I seldom see them more than once, but as an experience LvT offer something different than most. I have seldom seen something as horrible as the house that Jack built. It might be the only true depiction of psychopathy in movie history. The cold detachment is what makes the violence so horrible, psychopaths so scary. We are used to the Hannibal Lecters, that can simultaneously be horrifying and romantic. The story version of psychopaths. Jack is completely cold. He is a true psychopath and everything he does, he does for himself, the audience and story be damned. That is ultimately what makes the violence horrible. Not the graphic nature, but rather the pointlessness of it.

So Lars Von Trier is a guy who does a lot of stuff in his movies and in the promotions of them to get people talking about them more than actually producing truly great movies anymore, and yet he focuses on himself as being this great genius of film who's created these masterful, influential art pieces whether he really has or not. I know it's become a cliche to say something like this or make jokes regarding the person I'm about to, but I might as well: in other words, Lars Von Trier is pretty much the Kanye West of filmmakers.
@michaelvessel46045 жыл бұрын
THIS. Now that I think about it, he actually has quite a lot in common with Ye.
@peterelpanda25 жыл бұрын
Now this is my opinion, but I think the difference is that Kanye West as much as a douchebag he has come over the last couple of years , his music output still is great as his first outings almost a decade ago because he has reinvented himself from industrial music to gospel to psychedelic hip hop. Lars von Trier however, hasn't done that too much.His earlier output with the self referencing and obsessive violence was pushing the envelope years ago but now it's become edgy pandering.
@heymistercarter.5 жыл бұрын
@@peterelpanda2 Well considering Kanye's last song had a chorus that just repeated "I'm a sick f--k I like a quick f--k" over and over and had a featured artist whose best known song just repeated "Gucci Gang" about a million times, yea, I don't see that as being quite as good as stuff on College Dropout. I can kinda see your point in how Kanye did start by kinda evolving his sound as time went on and how Von Trier hasn't done that as much, but I might as well say that Kanye's stuff in the last couple years just hasn't been that good. At least not in my earholes anyway.

Watched the film last night (finally). And honestly loved it. The ending definitely had me going WTF and left me feeling so confused and lost (in a good way though, plus I still no very little about Dante’s Inferno). I personally didn’t think it was this crazy violent and gory film that it seemed to have been pushed as (I’ve seen way worse) but I think the film succeeds because when it needs to the violent moments are disturbing as fuck. That whole 4th incident with Simple was downright fucked in my opinion and I actually stopped laughing throughout that incident. Just because of how well handled and done the build and tension in the scene was. Seeing her slowly realize that she is in danger followed by his teasing and taunting towards her was 10 levels of fucked. If I may also offer an opinion mainly about the film’s portrayal of women since people like to go on about Van Tier being a misogynist. But what I take about Jack’s interaction with the women in this story is that he’s the one telling the story and since he clearly as an overinflated ego and is also a narcissist he’s going to tell the story in a way that makes him look good and the other people in his story look stupid by comparison. Because if you really think about it, no person is likely to act and talk in the way that sums Thurman’s character did. That’s clearly only how a “written” character can act and in this case an altered version of a person. Now that’s just my opinion and doesn’t offer explanation into how the men in the 5th incident are portrayed but that’s just why I took away and thought of after the first incident confused the shit out of me for how strange it was.

Second Coming97 Totally agree with you mate! I loved this movie, it’s like my second best film of all time! I was surprised how many funny scenes were in the movie too! As for the hell scenes, it was all in Jack’s mind. The whole movie was the mind of a psychopath. Remember when he finally opened the door and Verge (his conscience and guidance to hell) was there? He opened up and found another part of himself that he never knew he had, and when he shot by the cops(off screen) he was dying and in his mind was slowly going to hell. One could easily say Lars von Trier's own ego and mental illness reflect most serial killers. His need to push the envelope is why Jack's kept killing in more and more grotesque ways. Just as this Von Trier's biggest flaw and undoing maybe a direct reflection of how Jack ends his own career in the end. His need to set himself apart and be different and get away with it again causes him to raise the stakes more and more until he's finally caught. It's a very similar to how von Trier sees himself as a filmmaker. He definitely has many signatures like Jack and other serial killers do. Serial killers with high IQ's, level of depravity, and body counts to match have one main thing in common it's their ego that ends up being their undoing. I think he's showing a high level of self-awareness and that's not rarely ever a pretty picture with someone as disturbed and talented visionaries see themselves.

The only Von Trier film I've had the patience to finish, "Melancholia", is also his most accessible. " Antichrist" gets the most love, but I think "Melancholia" is a better film. Laughably nonsensical physics aside, as someone who has experienced excruciating, debilitating depression I felt he captured it. Not necessarily Justine's self-centered suffering, but the feel of the movie as a whole. Plus it didn't have the usual levels of Von Trier self-indulgence. That's probably why he stated he was disappointed in the final product. It's unfortunate that now his work seems to exist solely to troll viewers and critics.

I wouldn't call myself fangirl, but I did like his past movies, I love his imagery...I really like this one even though I agree with your points. That could be because I separate the creator from the movie a lot - I take his motivations and art, I take away the self-indulgence and (very probably) the mental illness. I loved the wild ride I was taken on - I cringed a lot at the start (in good sense of the word) and loved the evolution and vivisection of Jack. I felt like it was very well written, shot, edited. Perfect pacing. The Trierisms are part of his movies and I know won't go away - some pretention and so on, but I expect them now and like them. Although I must say this doesn't come from someone who minds gore, so that could be skewed. I'd say separate the art from artist even if the artist is shouting in your face about his art.

The violence and grotesque nature of this film is warranted. One thing I expected you to mention is that this movie is based on a novel by the same name by author, Jakob Melander. The genre of that book is nordic-noir. Other books that fall under that genre are The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Snowman (for popular, americanized film). And the violence is far, far worse. Especially in The House That Jack Built as these types of books go into heavy and extreme detail. These books are popular and have Swedish background, and all Swedish authors. These books are NOT meant for anyone. Just keep that in mind. Von Trier is from Denmark, not that far from Sweden, so it's natural that he directed this film. The House That Jack Built is a very hard book to find in Canada and the US, as for finding a lot or mixture of nordic-noir authors. One I can highly recomend is Lars Kepler, the Joona Linna series. Brilliantly written. The first book, The Hypnotist was made into a film, obviously in Swedish, and had high graphic nature, similar to the novel. I STRONGLY wished that you had mentioned this in your review, or researched it as it would have gave a lot of background to the nature of the violence. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo film, was nothing compared to the novel written by beloved Stieg Larsson, the film barely opened the door to this genre in the American film industry because truthfully, I don't think a lot of people can handle it. The House That Jack Built, I believe, has merely opened the door of that Americanized Nordic-noir genre and now is waiting for other brilliant novels like the joona linna series, or The Alphabet House byJussi Adler Olsen or his Department Q series. Now, as for Lars Von Triers theatrics and trying to get reactions, yeah, I agree, he shouldn't be like that. But great review as usual nonetheless.

The thing you said about him being a reactionary film maker is so true. And, if you're not shocked or appalled you're often cringing instead. However, I also think a lot of it is a performance on his part. There's a good chance he's not really this person, and just likes the idea of having people react to his own ego, or more precisely, how he presents himself in the media. It's become integral to his art, a sort of perverted auteurism - that isn't even that novel, because he's been doing it for so long by now.

Glad someone else saw this as a dark comedy. At least in part. Makes me feel less slimy!

I think you checked a lot of boxes with this review. I too had a hell of a time viewing this film. Some of excellent - some of it terrible - all of it interesting. The day after I listened to a podcast from a guy who wrote Lars von Trier-biography following him for a year - it blew my mind. So apparently, Lars von Trier thought he was a jew his whole life - as you can imagine this fitted the outsider/rebel/huge ego of Lars von Trier rather well - to be part of the choosen people. But when his mother died he found out the man who he thought was his jewish father, wasn't his father at all. It was instead a german named Hermann (or to that effect). THIS was what he meant when he said: "He thought he was a jew, but really he was a nazi" at Cannes. It was a personal story about loss of identity (alabeit told terriblely). The "I understand Hitler" comment, is to say "I too have been depressed (or at dark places). Also - LvTs mother was a communist who didn't want to be called "mom" but by her name - she didn't help little LvT with his neurosis and fears. During the cold war he would ask her if the rockets would come tonight and kill them - "Probably not" was her answer. As he grew up he idolised nazi architecture (as the PERFECT rebelion against his mother who was in a resistance group during the second world war.) EVERYTHING in a LvT movie is a part of him - that's why the "movies and art that has shaped us" is his own, since making each of them obviously have shaped him the most. This is (to his mind I think) his crowning jewel. A tribute to himself, his body of work (like a certain house) and the controversies around all of them.
