I think the ultimate post/meta modern takeaway is that late millennials and zoomers grew up with parents that rejected pop culture and tradition yet failed to establish a new one, thus leaving their children little structure for their influence. It's been very easy for them to build a completely new culture and society that, despite having access to infinite information, lacks any context or cohesion that someone with lived experience could provide.

I was too young to realize there was anything deeper to Lain than weird and edgy cyberpunk-y imagery when it first came out. I'm definitely overdue for a rewatch of it, but I own half the series on VHS (half on DVD) and haven't had a tape player for a decade. ...and typing that out made me feel old. It’s even more fascinating when you consider that by the time Lain first aired in Japan (1998), the country had only had widespread internet access for about 4-5 years. In 1999, only 13% of the population even had internet access. Considering Konaka and co. wrote the show before 1998, that means they had only a few years prior to think about the impact of the Internet on a post-economic collapse Japan. Pretty amazing when you think about it that way. That’s a big piece I feel is missing from your analysis, actually: The Lost Decades. Japan’s rising economy on the world stage during the 80s and 90s (which you do mention in your video) uplifted Japan’s perception of itself following its rise from postwar destitution through the 50s-70s. When the bubble popped, though, it gave rise to those flourishing subcultures that you mentioned. In a way, they were a response to yet another loss of Japanese prowess in the world stage. Those subcultures, both offline and online, represented thousands of people searching for new identities in the stew of global imports and loss of national identity that Japanese people faced at the time. If you’re interested in another philosopher who could fit easily into a Lain analysis, Bruno Latour is another great read. His work primarily concerns the ways in which we shape our technology and how it shapes us in return, and he’s more relevant than ever I’d say.

As I’ve gotten older (I will be 40 next year) I’ve come to realize that I am more like Lain than I ever understood previously. I'm not so sure it is neglected. (though it definitely is with regard to the arbiters of mass culture, maybe that what you meant) I'm 55 and have always loved animation as a medium. Obviously this means I consume a lot of anime, as well as discuss it with others. I first saw Lain 20 years ago (I was in college when it came out, so had no time) and it was well known to that era's 20 somethings. Almost 10 years later it was still referenced by the young crowd and now my 18 year old niece has brought it up as one of her favorites. I cannot think of any other anime like this. One that every 5 or 6 years goes by and it is still referenced by young adults as being a great show. Not even the well liked Cowboy Bebop, which is more a title recognition. Meeka may have given us insight into why this is so. Since the show is about identity crisis and early adulthood is the time of concretizing personal identity

The resemblance between Lain's Knights of the Calculus and Seele from Evangelion, particularly in their shared ambition to restore humanity to a primordial state of "oneness" through the conduit of the Human Instrumentality Project, is nothing short of striking. Both narratives are steeped in an intricate tapestry of Masonic symbolism, leaving one to contemplate the potential trajectory of our species. Could it be that the future of humankind lies in a digital, cybernetic utopia, a solid-state simulacrum of reality, destined to evolve inexorably from utopia to dystopia? The gradual awakening of individuals to the unsettling revelation that they have unwittingly bartered their very souls, relinquishing their free will and agency to partake in an experiment orchestrated by technocratic minds of an aberrant nature, seemingly intent on wielding omnipotent dominion over every facet of existence, including the very thoughts of their subjects.

I've never heard anyone else say "Lain is the best piece of media ever" but to this day after watching it on Tech TV's Anime unleased block in 2001, I still agree. Watching how the world has unfolded since has only cemented the sentiment for me and clearly others as the series is now way more popular than it ever was. Fantastic costume/set work as well!

You just gained a new subscriber 🙂 You're touching on a topic that I always wanted to learn more about since I'm a long-time fan of Japanese pop culture (including serial experiment Lain), but also a modern history graduate. It always boggled me how Japan during wartime imposed on its population a "death cult-like" mentality, but quickly changed into a "capitalist-consumerist" one during the high-growth post-war period. Hope to see more content.

I watch a lot of Whatifalthist's content and he did an episode about family structures earlier this year - Japan belongs to the "Authoritarian Family Structure" which is characterized by the oldest male in a family inheriting everything from their elders while the other brothers go into being warriors and priests, thus instilling an irrational aggression in their cultures, a belief that inequality is a natural thing and a desire to preserve their honor to even a suicidal extent. Such a system requires a lot of societal discipline to keep in place, so when a radical change happens at the top, the rest of society changes immediately. This not only explains Japan's post-World War II transformation but also its rapid industrialization following the Meiji Restoration. Perhaps not surprisingly, Germany has the same family structure, and they both ended up adopting fascistic political systems in the mid-20th Century.

Good video, though I will say that many people tend to forget that Pre-War Japan (and even Japan during the war) was capitalist, was integrated with global markets, and did allow for private ownership of capital (so long as it fell in line with the desires of the state). Its just a little detail since people tend to frame post war Japan as having been introduced to capitalism by the US when in reality the US just made Japanese Capitalism work for US interests. Just a nit pick, still a great video!

Lain is without a doubt one of the best anime, although I tie it with Ergo Proxy as both take on similar themes but through artistically stark contrast. While EP nails a lot of Gnostic theology/Neoplatonic philosophy, Lain's focus on the interconnectedness of technologically advancing societies with the distortion of what is "real", down to Lain's ephemeral disconnect with her sense of Self, really shows that the more connected we're becoming there's a paradoxical parallel growth in the fractals of layers of identity. I'm inclined to think it's the lack of understanding simulacra that allows them to develop in between the cracks of these layers of reality Thank you so much for this video, it's refreshing to see SEL get this depth of analyses it deserves, can't wait for more of your vids!

Thank you for sharing your love for SEL. It's bar none the best animated show ever created. I hate when people write it off as pretentious and overly complex, but it's a purposely ambiguous and esoteric masterpiece. A lot of the themes and predictions it made about the future came true in a very surreal and meta-modern way. The tag-line itself takes liberties in assuming the way things are right now are exactly how SEL portrays it and they were spot on. People are so overloaded with information and have so many different cultures they can embrace online that they can simply make their own world and experience it the way they want it; and if that wasn't enough, they become obsessed with specific people and become caricatures of themselves. The lines between the wired and the world get more blurred every passing day. The only thing we're missing is augmented reality and little avatars following us around for people to see right through their sunglasses. This show was so ahead of it's time that we haven't completely caught up yet. Great video! If you haven't seen it already, go watch Texhnolyze, same creators of SEL, it makes predictions about the very distant future.

Now that’s good stuff, very interesting takes on SEL, pretty enlightening too. Lain having a degree of omniscience really doesn’t help if most of the informations we generate are in service of creating alternative historical narrative/reality. Is a post-modernist reality perceived through approximations, convenient lies, myths, and self-aggrandizing tweaking of facts really any less artificial than the wired? In the end, as long as her good -ship- friend Alice is well and truly real there is some truths that simply cannot be emulated online ^^ Also I don’t imagine actually doing research in the collective unconscious is a very pleasant experience. It’s most likely not indexed if even categorized at all. Might as well try to pick a good book in the library of Babel. No wonder she got lost...

I always love how uniquely insightful 'Lain' (and other work like 'Pulse', 'Videodrome', and 'Perfect Blue') is about online life, partly because of how they're looking towards it from an anxious past. If anyone has any other recommendations that fit into that loose canon, I'd love to hear 'em!

It’s so frequency it’s so real about the way the online and we connect with our higher selves and the illusion of ascension the way we are so many different things i like to think of it in an esoteric way esp the fact that ain is also a character who even in her times is in touch with this connect of something greater

Despera and sel both show the mysticism of the human soul and what we were meant to do that why I feel it’s very esoteric

What if the creators had a glimpse of our current times, seeing people actually doing this, downloading themselves to the internet while authorities keep people from finding out what they've done. while I consider all your points very valid and definitely in the creators minds when they made it, I feel that the plot was a perfect outlet for exploring all these things. Most importantly it poses the question for people to ponder well before the events we have now. I'll not bore you with the true crime scenarios that match perfectly with this anime. IYKYK This is simply food for thought ^_^

I know this might be random of me, but if possible, and if it seems like a good idea for a video, a history of Christianity in Japan and how it is viewed by modern day Japan would sound great

I absolutely loved your video and your explanation of Baudrillard. Have you considered interpreting SEL through the lens of Hegel by seeing Lain's journey as a metaphor for the evolution of spirit?

We were delivered the Cartoon Image of Boris Badinov, by Bullwinkle and Rocky the Flying Squirrel. The content may seem crude, but the Messages similar. Your point is apparent as Commercial Media presents what we were told would be delivered in 1984. But there we are.....
