as someone whose first language is definitely not english, i watched this video approximately 7 years ago for the first time and barely understood anything due to the overall adhd kinda vibe. rewatching the video now got me thinking about how dramatically my english has improved over the years as i am not only able to get what bill was saying but even catch each word individually. wow. kinda proud of myself.

Because of the context. Because Western technology was so far advanced, and the USA was so much more powerful even in 1854 compared to Japan that the leaders knew it was play ball or be blown to smithereens and still have to do as they say anyway.

LilDankGang every history class I took and textbook I've read are so boring and do not inspire learning at all. This 9 minute video sank in more for me than years of history classes. Tons of symbols (text) and one person standing in front of you droning on for an hour with a chalkboard is not the best way for the human brain to learn. Visuals, sound and humor help a lot.
