Analyzing Oathbreaker Maddox

So we finally get to talk about Maddox's lore. Is it any good?
For those who watch my streams, you probably heard me get very negative towards what the devs said about his lore in the Warriors Den, but now that I've officially read his lore, I have some new thoughts. Some good...some not as good.
I think Maddox's lore needs one major change to make it work even better! Watch to find out what. ;)

I want them to add a bunch of Chimera Heroes, because lately it seems Horkos has been getting a ton of Heroes. I’d opt for a Conqueror that has seen the horrors of war and Horkos’ own cleansing of their ranks for sheep, so he ultimately decides to fight against Horkos. Another few more hero ideas I’d like to see is a Warlord that is brought back to life by Rune Magic (maybe it’s even Skald) A Black Prior hero based around an Ent that opposes Horkos’ Black Prior Leader (name escaped me rn) An ancient Ocelotl that is brought to fight against Horkos as they had began to go to Mesoamerica and keep fighting Ocelotls. And a Lawbringer that becomes a commander for Chimera, maybe he could have a Landersknecht theme. A few more contenders could be a Orochi, a Valkyrie, a Shugoki. Anything that could be something new, or different.

Something that really bothers me about this season’s lore is HORKOS sparing and being ok with an Oath breaker. I thought that was an ultimate deal breaker with OG Horkos

The OG order of horkos broke their oaths to follow Astrea and punish what they viewed as evil.

The best thing i like about Maddox is that he challenges the original theme of the game: honor. Maddox asks the question "When is it acceptable to break an oath?" Should one even consider breaking an oath? His answer is absolute survival. Don't forget that in the beginning of the story, Maddox went back to his Highlander home only to find it gone. Through out the year, he's seen the weakness of Chimera and the strength of Horkos. Here's a recap of Horkos' deeds: an Inquisition that commited genocide that could only be stopped by a turncoat. Plundered the new world only to be defeated by the Ocelotl, but not Chimera. Deceieved many people and killed them all, albeit from a third party. Now Horkos is at Maddox's front door and he is terrified. I think it makes perfect sense he turned traitor. I think he is meant to be coward worse than Daubeny. Anyway, thats all I got. BRO!! you need to be hired by ubisoft to be in charge of the lore! The part in your version where after maddox is ready to fight and astrea says" why would i do that?" That is serious mental manipulation that will destroy anyone knowing they didn't have to kill their own brother but show that you are not sheep and you will fight to the end. Astreas job would have been done without lifting a finger. Great job with the lore!

Maybe because they wrote him out to be like a survivor maybe he acts like a wild animal knowing when to fight our when to back down mostly following his instincts for example because he does anything to survive killing the sabertooth was the best option and after the fight with horkos he knew it was suicide which goes against every part of his being of survival choosing what's best for himself at the time

You are significantly better than Ubisoft at writing, I massively prefer your version. Regarding Maddox himself, I absolutely despise the character. He stands for everything I hate. Not only does he betray Chimera, not only does he betray his bond-brother, not only does he betray his adopted people and home, but he also betrays himself. His own ideals. At the first sign of trouble, he tucks his tail between his legs and bares his throat to the enemy. That is not a survivor. That is a backstabbing coward, plain and simple. Horkos should want nothing to do with him. I'm actually considering whether or not I bother getting the skin, even though it's an excellent skin. That's how much I dislike him.

A bit late to this party but I will say that you're right on all points, Raven. And that I will also add that after reading some of the lore popping up on the daily orders called "A Daughter's Journal" I think it is safe to infer that the new hero will be Scar's daughter or in some way involve her. That is my prediction at least.

What if for this new hero, they joined Horkos with Maddox to survive, but realized they had made a mistake and begins to sabotage Horkos from the inside until causing real havoc and escaping to alert Chimera where Horkos and their leaders are. This could lead to Chimera finally getting some kills on the Warmongers, and delivering Horkos their first REAL L and major setback, while at the same time giving them some purpose in the lore at all.

When they talked about him being more animalistic it made me think of a trapped animal the trap was the Oath he made an escape the trap by chewing through its own leg for survival by breaking the oath to live he is no longer truly caring for his people but for himself like a wild animal that will do whatever it take for survival even killing of its own kind he is no longer a viking but an oath breaker a wild animal looking to keep its own neck at the cost of others

raven knight i REALLY like your alteration of maddox's story, however i feel like there could have been another way without swapping the roles and that would be to take away some of his humanity making him more animal then human like the encounter changed a part of him and the reasoning of the tiger's survival is that it committed cannibalism against it's own kind it would explain why it's the last one and that it survived for so long maddox killing it embodying ' the will to survive' and in the ultimatum it would make sense out of desperation and knowing defeat is futile is willing to throw away everything in order to survive even his own brother in arms and village through this creating a connection of ' you are what you eat' a sabertooth tiger that killed it's own in order to survive same did with maddox with his village rather then a human being he lost part of his humanity in exchange of the sabertooth he wears astrea sees this and offers maddox a chance to join which maddox gleefully agrees and takes ' if you see this let me know what you thought of this route

22:22 yeah i may like horkos but you'll never hear me say the writing is good. I may say that its not as bad as you might think at first glance but i wont say its good. What pains me is that Astrea hasxthe potential to be a better character than Apollyon in my opinion if she had an actual good writer to flesh her out futher. Instead all were given is one liners or having to interpret her character from her actions and the actions of her followers who may not even be doin what Astrea would do for example the Aztecs and vela. I highly doubt Astrea would handle the Aztecs the way vela did.

Well id argue hes choice of betrayal is the more plausible one since he’s not really a beast but a survivar just like the sabertooth and thus chooses life over death for him and his people especially after experiencing such desperation when he was stranded. That makes this a good story. There is no clear choice for Maddox. That is what gives him character. Both choices have severe consequences Maddox has to live with.If he was a coward he wouldn’t make a choice at all and flee.

I love your ideas! We saw the same hypocrisy! The Sabre tooth kill is not match turning on your loved ones. Unless he had someone with him and fed them to the Sabre tooth.... howerever there is hope! Perhaps they can fix this and mid season reveal that its a lie! Maddux stood his ground on the battlefield and in his oaths. They couldn't break him. So they got someone from within to kill Skarde. Then, to eliminate MADDUX they spin the rumor that He broke his oath! Now he cannot turn to chimera for help. Perhaps causing this powerful warrior to rethink horkos' offer. Similar was used in the first season of Last Kingdom, when utred's village was burned and his vikikng step father murdered. I hope they fix it. I love the skin, but as a Marine, i don't respect him. He's a traitor. And a coward.

I feel like the problems with this years is that the writers dont know what to do with horkos like they have little depth we dont know alot about them and what we hear seems inconsistent are they cultist, a standing army , evil edgy dudes or a faction carrying out appolyon will Lore isnt bad but suffers from of inconsistencies that make certain lore bits not make sense Side note the daughter definitely the next hero

I use to like Horkos a lot until you look at their goals and how Astrea is perverting the ideals of Apollyon. I even made an OC story for a Warmonger who brwaks off and joins Chimera do to their disgust of Horkos ruining theur Idol's ideaology. They are very unfriendly to their teammates but will help them as they need. Take for example during a battle someone is downed by a barage of arrows. If they can help it they will help but mock them "Get up [Insert Character]! Only a frail wolf would be felled by such a small puncter." Or "Back in my old life I'd have left you here! Maybe even hid you for your boots. Now get up!". I also try to show them slowly growing to show more humanity during war instead if the cut throat goring of your enemies till they submit or brwak as their Idol taught them. Take as example a turn coat fleeing and running into them. "Is this the weakest link or a sheep in wolves clothing?" Or "A betrayal to your comrades? Oh how they will weep once they find you hung from your baracks. Unless you prove yourself. A sheep in a den of wolves!" Cackles as they march to the front lines dragging the lowly sheep behind them. Needs work but I like the Idea of an Apollyon worshiper breaking of from Horkos after seeing their actions not actyally being in the name of their idol. Thats why I have Given them the nickname "Disciple". And why are they refered to as They/Them? Well because they are struggling with who they really are. Two people, teo ideals stuck fighting to dominate their mind. Will they stay a warmonger or will they see peace as an option? Who knows!

6:25 what does horkos want as an organization is easy to answer. The order of horkos wants the strong in power and the weak to serve the strong. If the weak don't serve the strong then they must die. This was iterated all throughout year 5 when ubisoft was establishing the culture and ideals of horkos and chimera. This phase is said by Warmongers after unleashing corruption. " the weak serve the strong. So as horkos, not as Apollyon the order of horkos telling the village of molder to submit or die Is completely in line with what horkos is as a faction. "Dominance and tyranny." To understand horkos, you must divorce Apollyon (who she was as a character) from them. Apollyons legacy isn't being like her. Apollyons legacy is the natural state of man: War and conflict. That's what horkos has been causing all this time. War and conflict.

Todays daily missions expanding on the lore make 0 sense. First: "Astrea was not on the frontlines of the battle, When she heard tell of Maddox's treachery, she recognized him as a true wolf [..]" Second: "The Vikings loyal to Skarde were offered a chance to fight for Maddox. true to the end, they spit at the offer, cursing the name of the Oathbreaker. [..]" Both of these kinda prove otherwise. The village was full of wolves, and Maddox was a lapdog, happily yipping at Astrea's heel, because dommy mommy said I get to survive. I feel like this lore was absolutely fumbled, and honestly. I feel like they should have given a completely different lore. Horkos has had no wins and still is chugging along full force. Why not say that Maddox the Survivor (not the Oathbreaker), was a Highlander they found in the wild, caring for a pack of sabertooth tigers, after having slain and skinned the pack's alpha for survival. At first he hunts Horkos troops with his pack, but when they come in full force to see what savage has been hitting their caravans or something, They find this absolute beast of a man, who doesn't like them encroaching on his territory. With honeyed words Astrea convinces Maddox that Horkos are actually good, and strikes a pact. Maddox teaches horkos beastmasters to care for sabretooth cubs, Horkos gets a power boost completely separate from any faction, but not disrupting the current balance, we get the Maddox skin, and then maybe we could expand on the lore from there. Say the village that Horkos attack, with Maddox in tow now, had exiled Maddox for him being too savage, too animalistic ("If you can't live among people, out with you. live in the wilds, like the animal you are") Then we get the assault on the village (but not Maddox and vikings, Maddox, and horkos soldiers) they take over the village, Maddox's animalistic brutality carving a swathe through the defenders, until he confronts the village chief who exiled him. Heck, at that point, keep the blood brothers pact, but just add the caveat that it was broken when Maddox was exiled. I don't like Horkos, how it's treated in these later years. they feel hollow, and empty. a saturday morning cartoon villain, and this is a new episode, where they pull out yet another wacky plan. Besides, what's the explanation of Horkos invading a random ass village in the snowy ass end of Valkenheim. It's not a port town, it's not a stronghold, it's not a forge town... why this random village? It's kinda far from Qiang pass and the Wu Lin, where the Horkos efforts were focused just last season... Skin is dope, lore is lackluster, becasue Ubisoft refuse to make Horkos make sense.

All horkos does is win lol the only real defeat they had was at the hands of the ocelotl, but even then: Horkos dealt far more damage to the ocelotl than the ocelotl did to horkos, and horkos still got the full amount of gold they stole. making the loss meaningless because they still won.

A child could write a more compelling and sensible character than what Ubisoft has been writing. Raven, you're just- *chef kiss* -fukin' beautiful mate. You're right it could be perfect with that one flip of the roles to be a perfect.... minimum of a compelling and sensible character with consistency. Ah well. Their writing is so bad I never paid attention to this whole thing after completing the campaign back when this game was released. Everything in the multiplayer story was just nonsense to justify their season themes.
