I hate this commercial and the mentality behind it I have a feeling that they came up with the statistics before hand, then (if they did at all) did a small survey to match the predetermined results I want to see aesthetically appealing characters, not ugly and unappealing I have no interest in seeing myself "represented" . I'll play any character and enjoy any story so long as they're well written I do really think that a LOT of this is just jealousy and envy And yeah, being overweight is UNHEALTHY. A woman actually made a wheelchair for DnD. Or more specifically, she made a diatribe about how you should make Dungeons wheelchair accessible no matter how stupid that would be in a design perspective, and then an overpowered item she expected to just be given to people from the beginning. So yes, she expects all wheelchair bound people to want to be in a wheelchair in game.

I'm looking to argue that it's also learned narcissism and a lack of empathy. "I can't identify with these characters because they don't look like me." is saying that they refuse to find commonalities between them and characters who don't look like them. I can identify with characters who look nothing like me, are the opposite gender, and who are also entirely different species, because I have empathy. Why are we letting these people teach our children to be selfish brats?

I think the real problem is that people overweight usually suffer a lot of discrimination simply for not being thin, and sometimes they don't feel better when they lose weight. Changing your appearance to please others and ignoring your own happiness is not healthy. Of course, being morbidly obese is also not healthy, but not everyone who is overweight is like that because they eat too much.

This whole "You're perfect the way you are." messaging is so sad. I would even say it's dangerous and cruel. What it really conveys is a disempowering message of "Just accept your place. You will never be anything more." Don't grow, don't improve. Stay in your place. On the contrary, someone who has a healthy self-respect will be the person who possesses a sense of value in themselves. They will invest in their improvement because they believe that they are worth it. It's those people who overcome weight issues, disabilities, and other personal weaknesses. When someone says, "You are perfect the way you are." they don't love you. They love themselves. They do not have your best interest at heart. All they want is for you to like them and look like a good person. They aren't lifting you up. They are holding you down.

But in current year, my wifes ballerina body type is demonized as "unrealistic" well for an unrealistic body type its odd that i see said unrealistic body type everyday, and for most of the day. Furthermore, i really dont understand this obsession with "realism" in gaming. I dont want my dad bod reflected in my games, i make any male CAC i make cut and typically as jacked as possible. I make a character aspirational, not typical. Finally, i play games to escape reality, not reflect it. We cant use Kamehameha, fly, or die more than once. While we can drive like a maniac, its not a great idea. Stop ruining my escapism because you are painfully aware how unattractive you are and how desperate you are to force your ugliness as beauty. Gain confidence, lose weight, and be beautiful inside. Its that simple, a dirty spirit that loves uncleanness is impossible to hide.

Mass Effect Andromeda tried this whole "more relatable" women thing by not adding a single attractive female in the entire game for the sake of it being more realistic or some junk. 15:42 Raven, I think your tea is done XD In all seriousness, a pretty great vid. I do think that depending on the game and the context within it, there should be more body types. Like DBD does have a couple women that don't have the hourglass figure but you could just assume the Entity gave everyone the same speed and stamina outside of perks. And while Gridlock from Rainbow 6 is rather large, she's still muscular and fit enough for her job. There are some fat men like in fighting games that manage to do the things they can do, so I don't see why not there can't be women either, though of course that's not what people want. At the same time, why do these people need a video game to validate their existence? I'm not mad that there are no underweight Asians like myself. Having certain races inserted into a game where it's not needed or doesn't matter is one thing, but body types that Dove is trying to push, they better have a damn good reason as to why the person is built like that and how they're working around it in-game. And in games that gives you extensive options to customize your character, I never make a character look exactly like me. I only make a better-looking me, a character I made, or just a hot-ass tan-skinned woman.

Beauty is completely subjective; I personally find thicker women more attractive than skinny women. 🤷♂ Everyone has different preferences and tastes when it comes to attraction, and the same is true for gaming. There is literally no issue with having diverse body types and representation in games, and citing "realism" as a reason for believing different body types shouldn't be on equal footing when it comes to a character's abilities and performance is ridiculous because -- SPOILER ALERT -- video games aren't real. 🤯 Also, to everyone equating "realistic" to "unattractive", you are laughable...
@RavenKnightYT Жыл бұрын
You're right, beauty is subjective, but that's why I said in the video that we expect characters who do a lot of physically impressive things (fighting, running on walls, double jumping, etc.), to be physically capable of performing them. It's not JUST about beauty standards. *"There is literally no issue with having diverse body types and represenatation in games,"* Well, not quite. It does depend highly on the type of game and the context of it. In a game set in precolonized Africa, would you like to see white and hispanics invovled? That would be more diverse, but certainly not accurate. In a game set in a setting where the world is starving to death due to lack of resources, should the main characters be overweight and clearly obese? Wouldn't make a whole lot of sense then. I mean it's not that you can't have these diverse options...but they may not work in context. *" and citing "realism" as a reason for believing different body types shouldn't be on equal footing when it comes to a character's abilities and performance is ridiculous because -- SPOILER ALERT -- video games aren't real."* I addressed this criticism already. Declaring that videogames aren't real, therefore we can do what we want with them is the ultimate cop out of someone who simply wants to see their desires on screen and damn the consequences. By that logic: I want to play a game where my human character can breathe under water for no reason....why not? It's not real. I also want to play a Call of Duty game where I can shoot lasers out of my eyes and regrow lost limbs without explanation...after all...it's not real. Sure, those are rather outlandish examples, but when you play the card of 'video games aren't real, therefore who cares about realisim,' that is the can of worms you are opening. Open at your own risk. *"Also, to everyone equating "realistic" to "unattractive", you are laughable..."* I don't think anyone is...we're not saying realistic is unattractive, but it's very clear that the folks at Dove think that way. Consider that they keep saying 'we want to support realistic body standards,' and yet every woman they choose when talking about 'realistic body standards,' is always not a very fit or well off woman. Usually they are overweight or somehow disabled. Are fit and trim women somehow not realistic? See, like you said earlier: attractiveness is a subjective issue. You may like thick girls, but many men prefer fit girls. Both extremes exist...so why is it, when people complain about 'unrealistic body types' they always point at sexy women with fit bodies, and then prop up 'realistic bodies' by pointing to the overweight women? Last point: I find it something of a double standard that if men are attracted to a fit or curvacious woman with traditionally attractive features, then that's sexist, objectifying, and evil. However, if we DON'T find the overweight woman attractive, then we're bigotted, hateful, and intolerant. It's pandering and silly.

I was about to adress your criticism , but Raven has already said everything I wanted to say 20 times better than myself

Firstly, Body positivity is more about "Hey just because your fat doesn't make you a lesser human being" not "promoting obesity" as everyone without critical thinking skills seems to think. Secondly, you aren't a doctor, so you cannot judge someone's health purely on appearance alone.

Firstly, if they are not promoting obesity, then why do they keep pushing the phrase 'realistic' when showing obese or overweight women? The implication is that the attractive and healthy weight women we usually see are somehow NOT 'realistic' thus it is an underhanded insult to women who care about being fit and thin and healthy, saying 'this standard is unrealistic.' They are subtly implying that overweight is natural and realistic, and thus should be further represented, while secretly shaming the high standards of a fit, healthy, and attractive body type (hence why the large poster cut out of the attractive Cinthia was knocked down at the end of the ad). Secondly, while it is true that I am not a doctor, and it's often difficult to determine accurate health issues just from a visual examination...I would argue that any doctor would agree with my statement in the video: Being overweight isn't healthy. In fact, according to most medical professionals, being overweight increases likelihood for high blood pressure, heart problems, liver conditions, certain forms of cancers, and other serious medical issues. Granted, it does not garuntee these things, but the odds of them are higher. The deflection of saying 'well you're not a doctor' means little, for if I were to actually find a doctor and ask their position on the matter, I'm quite sure they'd agree that being overweight is not ideal...which is what I said. But then again...you could just think critically about it.

ok, I follow your channel very little but I have always agreed with you, but I honestly feel attacked and disappointed that you want to push beauty standards that force women to be unrealistically attractive. I think it would have been better if I had forgotten your channel, I don't hate you and I agree with several things you've already said, but honestly, being ok with toxic beauty standards is simply a no no... sorry, I hope you have a good day. Women and men don't need to be conventionally attractive to be happy. Changing your appearance and who you are to make OTHERS happy is not being honest with yourself, you should only change yourself to make YOURSELF happy, not others.
