Analyzing the recent Triple H Booking Mistakes in WWE

One of my biggest issues with hhh booking is that he relies to much on long term booking. A good storyline doesn’t need to last long term. Short term booking can also be great. What’s most important that the developing of the story is consistent. Sometimes the storyline can feel like it’s stalling or repetitive just so they can either stretch a certain fued, match, title change to a certain destination. Mostly those destinations feel like it’s either summer slam, royal rumble or wrestlemania.

Agreed I feel he could’ve pulled the trigger on Xavier’s heel turn now you got odyssey jones out for domestic violence and I’m just left wondering where he’s going with that. He just saves these blow offs for the big shows. Bash at Berlin they could’ve pulled the trigger on a Kevin Owens heel turn. Things do drag out a bit much.

@@allnighterrr agreed. I’m not sure whose Cody is going to face at bad blood and I’m hoping it’s not another solo match. This is Cody’s hometown and he’s the wwe champion. He deserves a proper storyline/match leading up to that PLE. I have a feeling we are still getting Kevin Owen’s heel turn at some point and If they do I hope the fued will have a strong build up for bad blood because if it doesn’t then it’ll be overshadowed by drew vs punk, liv vs Rhea and potential Damien vs Finn.

HHH's biggest flaw is that he books these long ass title reigns for almost every champion and it becomes stale really quick. For example, many assume Cody ain't dropping the title till Mania. So basically every championship match Cody has from now on has no drama or intrigue. We KNOW that he's going to retain. That's why I believe a lot of fans have turned sour on his reign thus far. Dropping the title to Orton at Survivor Series would create a lot of interest and Cody and can easily win it back at the next PLE.

What I noticed about HHH's booking this year (as he himself would admit) is that he plans ahead and knows what the conclusion of some angles are....but to me, he's not really good at filling things until the conclusion. It's either seemingly the same repeat segment every week until the conclusion. Example: New bloodline's run until Roman's return; Chad Gable with alpha academy and now wyatt six; and seemingly now with judgment day.

Randy getting the title shot already made sense because of how he lost to gunther at king of the ring and ko git his shot because of everything he has done with cody dealing with the bloodline and cody rewarded him. Both those scenarios made sense booking wise imo.

I agree I have noticed Triple H hasn’t been doing well with building competition for his champions. With Gunther I don’t mind the Randy match it was a logical callback and Randy should feel slighted. For Sami they have history so i don’t mind too much l, however, there is a flaw considering Sami just lost an IC feud now he feels worthy to call his shot for a world title match. But I don’t think Sami winning a #1 contender match would’ve been best simply because Triple H is already doing too much of that lol. Did it with the tag title, US title and now IC. It just feels like a lazy way to find a match to put together. Even with Cody all his feuds post mania just feels like filler to buy time for Roman or Rock. I mean he hand picked KO, a friend, to face him because irl WWE just doesn’t have challengers for him

To me it seems like their booking philosophy is all about maximizing profits first and foremost. They don't have to try as hard to get the average person into the shows because the company is hot rn so they kinda just do the bare minimum in most spots and can get away with it. Shows are a lot better than under Vince but at times can be very predictable and some stories drag. I'm also not a fan of the lack of credible challengers being built for Cody when Gunther's challengers feel a lot more dangerous/important

I disagree. Aside from not actually having won a singles title yet, he's been booked pretty well. Hell, even in all but one of his singles titles matches, he's only ever lost due to interference, even against Roman. I do still believe he should've won MitB, but the Drew vs. Punk feud has been incredible, so I can't complain too much.

What annoys me the most is that, aside from the Tag Titles that are worthless, all the other titles seems to only change hands at SummerSlam or at Wrestlemania (except when the champion is injured). This mean that all the "B Shows" or even shows like Money in the Bank or Royal Rumble don't mean anything when the titles are on the line. Also I gotta say that the booking of the new Judgment Day recently really annoys me as well. They are really running that faction into the ground again just to put over one or two wrestlers. They are clearly recycling what they did with the Edge vs. Judgment Day rivalry in 2021-2022 too. The JD only won 1 segment since SummerSlam while the "Terror Twins" are booked like supermen while being 2 vs. 5 and won every other segments/matches. Its really not good at all.

I agree so much with both points especially with Judgement Day. For starters every segment with Terror Twins vs JD is predictable. JD tries to interfere and gang up on someone so 1 or both members of the Terror Twins come to the rescue. It’s already bad enough that Liv rans away from Rhea EVERY TIME but she just ran away when she had one good leg last RAW. Also, why is Priest, 1 man, consistently taking out Carlito Finn Dom and JD?

For me personally my perfect booker would be HBK I just enjoy his style of booking way more than HHH like for example in NXT the title reigns aren’t nearly as long but very much respectable for a reign on NXT rather than go for many many months and years long reigns on the main roster which I don’t really enjoy tbh.

My only gripes with his booking is the tag team divisions when it comes to his champions Finn and JD haven’t defended their World Tag Team Championships and they’ve held them for 70+ days and are pretty much an afterthought considering Judgement Day is feuding with the Terror Twins. The WWE Tag Team Championships are pretty much held hostage by the Bloodline and haven’t defended those much either. Don’t get me started on the women’s tag division theres only 2/3 teams competing for those titles.

I'm looking at Triple H's WWE landscape from the perspective of a 5-year plan. That doesn't mean that he couldn't be doing things better during this period, but it'll take time for enough talent to get over enough that challengers can seem more credible, and audibles/risks can be taken knowing that something won't be lost (Gunther looking like a chump, Cody's status as "the guy" going down). I agree with everything you said, and just figured I'd add my own color to it. Triple H's feet should be held to the fire, but these things will take time, and I think he'll refine his approach as he's in the big chair for longer.

Triple H said back in May that Orton was owed a rematch against Gunther after that bad finish. In story, Orton decided to cash in that promise after Gunther became champion. Triple H took an obvious error and booked it as the main event of a PLE. Thats called owning it. Long term booking is key.

Triple H isn't perfect but he's trying. Even 3 three shows it's hard to make sure a roster of 150+ people has something for everyone. The tag titles are one of the biggest glaring issues. The women's tag titles are completely useless at this point no matter who holds time. I get why Jade and Bianca are a team, to help Jade get better, but it's at the cost of every other tag team. Damage CTRL is the only other Women's tag team people care about but Bianca has a record of 60-2 against them. Also Pure Fusion Collective is never going to get over. I continue to say at this point drop the tag titles and make the 2 Women's Mid card titles. They'll get more focus, help elevate more talent and you don't have to throw tag teams together. Splitting the Men's tag titles hasn't done anything for with set of belts either. the Judgement Day and the Bloodline aren't defending them. Hell, they are all involved in feuds that don't need the tag titles. With the rumors of the MCMG and the Lucha Bros coming to the WWW, the tag titles need a bigger focus. Also as much as I love the New Day, it's time to break them up for a bit. Hell, we also need to give Montez Ford a serious singles push as well. We have to all admit the Karrion Kross experiment has been a failure. WWE needs to start putting less focus on the Four Horsewomen, rumors are Charlotte's return is very soon and she's getting inserted right back into the title picture against Nia. We all know how this will go. My only hope is it leads to Tiffy Time vs Charlotte and Tiffy goes over. These are some of the bigger problems I see. Gunther and Orton made perfect sense. KO vs Cody was fine, but Cody needs a serious feud till we get to Rock/Cody.

Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn losing the tag titles back to Bianca and Jade so quickly proved they only won them for the home country pop and because Drew was going to lose later in the card. That's short term nonsense booking. Shinsuke went from losing every match to not even having matches anymore and Karrion continues to have no momentum. Those are supposedly his guys so I don't get it. Then you have Michin challenge Nia for her title after not having a match for a month and having already been squashed by Nia two times in the last two months. Cody's dry, boring feuds that seem to go nowhere besides Solo. No LA Knight or Bronn Breaker title defenses at Bssh At Berlin. NXT could be better too, but overall Shawn seems to have a better grasp of sustaining heat and multiple angles going on at once.

I like triple h booking for the most part but hes definitely flawed as all bookers are, he has to do better with the tag team and many womans storytelling. I think in the big storylines he does a pretty good job with something that may seem bad in the moment but it works out in the end. And some weeks on smackdown specifically are very skiable. Out of 10 id give him like a 7 to 7.5 i do think he is a bettee booker than vince and tk. And maybe hbk, i think hbk is a solid booker as well

Didn't Gunther say no to Sami? I presume Sami sill compete and win a #1 contender match through September. I think my biggest two issues with HHH's booking is that 1) Every story angle takes such a long time to develop. I think its important to have some long stories and some short ones too. Some of these stories move at glacial paces and they start to get boring. Sometimes its good to have a surprise heel turn, not one that we all see coming. 2) I don't think HHH books most of his heels very well. Most of his heels are booked like goofy, clueless jobbers. Chad Gable loses most of his matches - he had so much more depth with his "it just means more" character, but then his WM story was given to Sami and now he's just a cartoon villain. Karion Kross loses every feud he's in. The Bloodline atm is booked to look toothless without Jacob Fatu. A-Town Downunder are hapless - they were weak tag team champions and their win at WM was completely overshadowed by Awesome Truth. When Damage Ctl were heels, they couldn't get a break even when they held gold. Fyre and Dawn were never given the champion treatment before dropping the titles - for some of their matches they never even got entrances, you come back from advert breaks and they're just in the ring. The Judgement Day have been made to look like complete fools, its 4 male members (including Finn fricking Balor!) have been wrecked nearly every week by Damien Priest and Rhea Ripley. HHH's heels don't feel dangerous, which sadly neuters a lot of the stories for me. The matches are great but the build, unless your the Bloodline, means the heels run with their tails tucked between their legs most shows.

HHH is a very safe and logical booker. There are pros and cons to this just like with every other type of booker. I think Smackdown suffers the most right now, look at their roster and count how many guys are credible enough to feud with Cody right now. Now remove the ones they've already done.

Besides gunther already has sami and punk setup as his next challengers, there was a tease with kofi so that could be a tv program. Why not focus on the lack of challengers for cody if you were going for that? This video wasn't well thought out at all
