I kind of feel like most people attack Alicorn OCs. There’s a reason they are so popular though. Our mane character in the show became an alicorn, which basically stated that there could be more created. Flurryheart’s birth now means they can simply be born as an alicorn, even though she’s the first. Saying not to create an alicorn OC and just the three main races is limiting creativity in my personal opinion. Instead, I’d like to see one on how to do an alicorn OC correctly. Also with the newest upcoming clip of season 9, there’s big changes coming for alicorns.

People also seem to forget that your OC or sona can simply be a design and that's it?? You don't need a deep backstory or complex universe or reason for making them an Alicorn, just make them a design you like. Who cares if other people don't like your reasons? Your OC is for you, not them. Same thing for kinsonas and AU OCs of canon characters. So long as your OC doesn't look identical to a canon character it's fine tbh.

The fun juxtaposition of a pegasus that’s shy and afraid to fly, or an earth pony that somehow manages to hang out with rainbow dash in the sky is what makes the characters Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie interesting. I don’t think people should focus on what pony race suits their personality best but rather what interesting ideas you could make up for the different races. Or not. You could also just choose what you like. There’s more than one way to choose the “right” race for your oc. Also remember that the pony world is very different than the human world. You could make OCs that have jobs that can’t possibly exist in real life, and then it might be quite important what race they are.

My MLP OC is a Draconquis named Hexy. I struggled for many years to make a pony OC that fit me and nothing was sticking nothing, I drew was sticking out to me, so one day I decided that, I would have a character that reflected my own chaotic, goofy nature and who was a reference to my favorite character in the MLP; FIM universe Discord. Her design underwent a lot of changes and fixing and redesigning, until, I came up with the perfect design for her! to this day I couldn't be happier that I did not choose a pony Oc. the other reason I didn't choose a pony was because, I felt like my OC would have drownded in the sea of pony Ocs, I personally have nothing against Pony OCS. I just didn't want one. Also I'm not a very active member of the Brony/Pegasister community, still in the fantom but also at the same time outside of it i.e this means, I love watching the show, buying the merchandise and even some of my good friends are bronies/ pegasisters, I just don't go to Con's or meetups. Like Discord he's not a pony but he interacts with them and has friendships with ponies.

I recently made my first pony OC, and I'm pretty happy with her. I've got experience with OC making and designing, honestly designing OCs is SUPER fun to me. I love seeing what I can do to make my characters unique while also making sense for their species or universe. My pony is an artistic coffee addict named Mochamint. She's an earth pony who enjoys drawing and over all vibing out. She's not a complex character, but she does bring me comfort. Her over all scheme has a mint coloring to match her name, but I gave her pink eyes because I think blue and pink works well together and it helps add flare to her design so she's not so basic to look at lol

I think the best way to make a non-conventional OC work, such as an alicorn or other weird variants that are frowned upon, is to create a backstory with the intent of the TV show audience. Much of what KP said is true and you need to work around it. So, if you have a pony that is dark in terms of overall personality, it needs to fit within a mythology or theme that represents it as a new concept rather than dropping it in willy nilly. Also, do not be ashamed about dark colors because the royal guard have plenty of them as well as the history of Equestria being vague enough to squeeze extra stuff in it. Just make cool stuff that you think people would enjoy without scaring the little girls too much and you are solid.

Joe Francis That was the point of my comment, numb nut. They aren't bad, but they are so out of left field, you need to justify their existence. If you just plop them in with no context, people are just going to assume the worst out of it. The main point of an OC is to connect yourself to the community with a representation of yourself. If you make yourself an outlier with no explanation, you are isolating yourself; therefore, making a "bad OC" that people are going to ignore. Best way to have a red and black OC is to have a good backstory and character design that people won't reject outright. It is fine to just create to create, but that is all it will be used for, to just exist. Showing it off to people won't have any good results.

@@maxord11 I don't think you have to make an OC that abides by canon or have complex / unique reasoning to have your OC be an Alicorn or not-yet-seen race / species. Make an OC that you like and is pleasing to look at that represents you. The opinions of others when it comes to OCs and especially alicorns isn't important if your OC represents you and makes you happy. This idea that every OC needs a deep backstory and reason that everyone agrees on for their race or cutie mark is so limiting and ridiculous.

When I first made my oc back in a school, she had short hair, glasses, and a different cutie mark and feathered wings instead of demon ones. I was terrible at drawing back then, and wasn't super into the fandom. Over the years I discovered the Pony Generator and made my oc better from that. In fact, all my ocs started out with the generator. Eventually I gave my ocs different mane styles and tails. I finally made them my own instead of using what someone else made. I've been proud of myself up to this point and still am. I have gotten many compliments on my oc Haiku, despite her being a red and black alicorn oc. And it makes me happy not to get the whole Mary Sue comment that some other oc creators get. Well thats it for my ramble. Toodles!

my problem is not just about it looking "edgy" or "2cool4u", it's about the colors clashing and it _only_ being those two colors, without a color to balance it out. like King FireStorms' oc. the yellow balances it out a bit, and is easier on the eyes (you don't have to strain yourself to look at it), as well as the red being on the face, so you can see his face better. It's a general rule not to go pure black when choosing a color, you know. but, that's my take on it, as well as other things I've picked up on.

My original OC was a half-unicorn half changeling. It wore a ponified mask from BIONICLE(a Miru, to be more specific) and specialized in finding interdimensional rifts. I haven’t made another since, but I also am not sure how I feel about the old one, so I guess it’s just...there.

I have an OC that is deliberately terrible. He's a cursed Alicorn Prince (with batpony wings instead of pegasus) with a dark and mysterious past, a brooding, cynical view of the world, and of course, a heart of gold once you get to know him. It's because he's the creation of my actual pony OC, Magic Circle, who is playing a D&D game for the first time and has no idea what he is doing, so I came up with the most terrible cliche thing I could think of for him to make.

I notice that some people use OC and -sona interchangeably, and I wish they wouldn't. Every -sona is an OC, but not every OC is a -sona. That out of the way, my ponysona is a unicorn named Crepuscular Rays. He's from Canterlot, quite bookish but a bit more outdoorsy than me (he actually *likes* camping), with a specialization in spells that reduce presence. He's got a purple coat, blue mane and tail (along with a scruffy beard), and his cutie mark is a dotted outline of a pony.

honestly, my oc may look big and bold and too much but every bit of my oc's looks and story reflects my irl looks and story. sure it not exsactly my irl story and books but i let my imagination run wild. my oc is my profile pic. if you have any questions about her then throw them at me. i'm even going to try and hire voice actors and animators to really make the backstory of my oc good in my eyes and make the whole story a series so when somepony asks "hey, what's your oc's backstory?" i can send them the whole playlist of it that tells her backstory. and there will even be a bit at the end explaining her looks and what stuff from my life inspired bits and pieces of the story and character so she may not have color theory on her side, but she means a lot to me and every bit of her has a meaning.^^ even her dark side has a meaning.

My first unicorn OC was named Scholar Note; she always wrote many stories, dreamt about being a famous writer, and she was friends with Pinkie Pie. The next one I made was my first alicorn OC named Eclipse. She was the daughter of Princess Luna who started and founded the new flying group of Equestria: The Shadowbolts. My 3rd OC (and I use her now to define me on Internet) is named Princess Jinx Batstar. Princess Jinx Batstar is actually a baticorn (a hybrid between a vampire and a alicorn), her parents are Princess Luna and Count Dracula (Yes the one from Hotel Transylvania). Jinx is very different from what you expect; for example, she can come out in the day without protection but only when it's partly sunny, cloudy, partly cloudy, snow, and rainy, just not when it's clear, because she'll burn and have to put on two bottles of sunblock to protect herself. Second, she can't eat huge portions of garlic (only tiny or small portions) because her throat will swell and her neck will itch. Third, Jinx can only turn into a bat like her dad and half-sister Mavis by having to flying up and touching the ceiling. I made more OCs to be related to mine but I only brought back Eclipse to the family.

I have a Changling OC but I'm stuck on her reformed look. Her backstory is fairly simple, she was taken from the hive when she was a grub and experimented on. Was rescued and one of her rescuers adopted her. She would disguise herself as a black Unicorn with a blue green main and joined the royal guard. Was almost killed during the invasion of Canterlot so she hid herself during Teirk and the second Changling invasion.

A lot of my character's visual design was unintentional, but it kinda ended up falling into place, if that makes sense. Really, his palette consists of four colors: black(hair, trench coat, pants, shoes), white(shirt under open trench coat), cream(skin), and moderately saturated blue(irises). This palette actually represents him quite nicely. At least to me, I think you could get to know Thoren a little bit with a simple glance. A black exterior with a white interior for his endless struggles with his own balance, and the touch of blue to both literally and figuratively add some color to him. I've read that blue can be interpreted as a visual form of purity, and I took that literally! A portion of Thoren's character is the expression of pure, raw, unadulterated emotion--positive or otherwise. Quite often, this shows as pure rage! This accompanies a refusal to lie, to only say what he means, a strict code of honor, and unbreaking will to protect people; regardless of what people may think of him. It ended up creating something visually simple but thematically complex. I've had Thoren for a long time, so he's been around in my headspace for a while. Admittedly, not everyone enjoys him, but I've come to realize that he fulfills a particular region in entertainment. He's definitely not for everyone, but I'm proud of him, of how much he's grown, and what he means to both myself and those who decided to take him up for an appearance. My pony oc from the 3rd grade is a unicorn with invisible wings, eyes that are the same 4 colors as her hair (highlighter green, highlighter orange, highlighter pink and purple) and her skin is dark magenta? writing this for any young ones who may be watching this a few years later: there are no good or bad ocs! this creator however, does have some good advice for helping create an oc that you want to “fit in”. (although i do disagree with the “black and red is a cliche” bit. i’ve seen some great black and red ocs. also make your oc an alicorn if you want to.) overall, you should focus on having fun with your ocs if that’s your provocative. PLEASE don’t change your oc just because someone else says it’s “wrong”

I know this is old and I'm not sure if you'd have one that more on other things in mlp But what about other creatures like a changeling or griffin oc? Or even a Draconequus oc?(We know Discord is the only draconequus shown, but why have a species name if he's the only one? The world is a large place outside of Equestria and we know Discord can go to his own little dimension) What would you suggest for those kinds of ocs since they don't really relate to some things about pony ocs.

Tip for a alicorn ocs you wanna change YOU CAN have horns- like- change from a like unicorn horn- TO LIKE ANTLERS OR OTHER ANIMAL HORNS like bull horns or ram horns! It still involves some sort of "alicorn" type pony/ character that isn't crazily like this magic flying horse, and actually give it a more likeable notation, for example I have this old brown and tan oc (I have a few brown mlp ocs) I haven't redesgined, she was an ALICORN because i liked the idea of magic but pegasi were always more of a favorite to me, I can take the alicorn/ unicorn horn from that oc and change it for maybe some antlers to go for the deer like pegasi especially with the colors seeming great for that idea (I have a redesign of fluttershy that makes her more of a winged deer since its more like her character, very sweet and shy), OR maybe some TUSKS, your oc doesn't specifically have to have the horn of a unicorn if it's an alicorn, it also makes it more likeable in the character since alicorns are usually unfavored by very well known artists. You could also chose different WINGS like how they have the bat ponies.

Definitely use darker and more subtle colors. Dark blues and purples are good. White can make a good accent, but it's best to make it subtle. I'd say look at galaxy art for inspiration.

Definitely a navy blue base, this will help set you apart from all the black bases. Take care not to look too much like princess Luna as she's a fan favourite and you don't want people griping that your OC is a copycat specifically because she can sometimes be presented as tragic as well.

My OC is a main part of my personality. I have anxiety and ADHD, I was bullied a lot in my childhood and still am, I have loves and passions thhat are a main reason of my bullying. It took me a lot of time to solidify on the OC I have now. Mine is an alicorn-now before you start a rage war I have a good reason for why. I have very low self confidence and no matter how many times people say I'm special I don't believe it therefore I created my OC as an alicorn because I am special (I guess) but I don't think of myself in that way and never really have that thought in my head. So aside from that my OC has magic involving the ocean. Her name is Ocean Sparkle because that goes with my character's power and is one of the literal meanings of my acual name.

For my ponysona she's an Earth pony, not much for physical stuff, maybe cuz I feel in touch with nature?) But either way I can only see myself as an Earth pony, however if I had a power I could choose from (besides shapeshifting) I'd choose to have massive wings! A couple weeks ago someone gave me the idea to have prosthetic/fake wings which I'd have to look into the lore to find out how flying works to see if I could do that to my oc. I also have a few alicorns cuz I don't wanna have my world with my ocs in the world of the show.

My OC is named Butterscotch Pop. She's a yellow and orange pony with magenta eyes, a butterscotch cutie mark, and frizzy hair. She's a Pegasus, but prefers walking to flying as her wings are a bit large for her body, and she's clumsy. Her mane and tail are dark brown with orange strips. She's quiet, because almost everything she says is a solid roast, even when she doesn't mean to. Butterscotch Pop still manages to have friends though lol

Oh boy. I have a lot of pony ocs in all honesty and I try to think carefully about how I want them to be designed and such. In all honesty sometimes I go on roblox and play one of the my little pony games and I get kinda scared by all the oversaturated colors but then I have to remind myself that really desaturated colors aren't the best and isn't color theory just the best? Anyway I remember when I tried to make my online persona (catsona?) into a pony and it didn't work too well since I felt she didn't fit into the universe (I don't use her to roleplay as I feel she doesn't fit into fandoms too well) and so I gave up on making her into an mlp character but for some reason I find it hard to make a ponysona for myself since there's so many choices to choose from when you're making a character. I haven't tried in awhile so maybe I'll give it another go.

She's based off my main OC I have, since Dr. Spiral is a vampire queen I made her MLP version an Alicorn but not huge, just a regular size Alicorn like Twilight was when she was introduced. My first oc: Nebula, Luna recolor, hair could come off and it could become stuff, two pairs of wings and two horns, edgy, cringe Current oc: Golden spell, has few colors because most of it goes into his story, he was born with too much magic so he uses his leftover magic to make wings, if his magic isn’t controlled he can actually seriously hurt a pony.

Red and black OC's oh yes the simple color combination to tell your audience that your character is evil. I mean heck you could always use yellow and purple as well and even some orange to show that your character is evil. I think my favorite however, would be the "White/light is not good." Trope. I felt it was used well in Yugioh GX. This could also work to make your character stand out provided you can pull it off.

Ok... your sentence is really fucked up. I'm just going to ignore that sentence structure to save everyone's sanity... When I made my OC, I didn't look at any of these videos. Now I'm watching them to get *ideas* on how to improve it. It is up to you to decide on how you want your OC to be, but videos like this one are ideas on how to make a better OC when the time comes or to improve existing ones so they don't turn out looking like a 4 year old's art project instead of something good.

I have ONE alicorn oc out of my 17 mlp ocs. Now here me out on him, yes it is a guy UwU And I adore how he came out. Some people have said he has a more falcon look to his design, I dont see it, but that is how some have perceived his coat and wing pattern. This alicorn of mine, I see as the prince of theifs, a stallion who was thrown out by his parents, a pegasus father and a unircorn mother. His existence isnt really known by anypony in equestria, and he is called out to be the stallion in the hood, due to him stealing things from other ponies. Like a dragon, he is very greedy and seriously loves shiny things, especially gold. This character has more browns and blues to his design and green eyes, along with some scars, and a ankle brace, cause weak back leg from tagic past. I put a lot into this character, then again I put a lot into all of my characters. ._. Even if I dont write it down- But again. Most alicorn oc's are really bad looking or just simply goofy and have no actual purpose. But if you want I dont mind at all showing you my alicorn characrer, or any of the other characters I have, like his pegasus son. I could even go on about his back story too, and how he even has a son and blah blah blah yah know. If you dont, that dont bother me either, and I know this may be a really late reply to how old this video is but bleh, dont mind how old it is. 🤷

Honestly something I see way to much is OCs that are muddy colours as a counter to overly saturated. So you see a sea of muddy blues, browns, weird mints, grays and dark yellows when you see peoples OCs grouped together and it seems just as unpleasant as a Technicolor OC. Sometimes doing the opposite of what is bad is misguided too.

I have a purple and blue oc which is a pegasus. She is the forgotten sister of Celestia and luna. She is technically the princess of the stars but because she wasn't born with a horn she found another way to raise the stars, which is creating enough friction with her wings and that is how she rases the stars. She is the youngest and she got corrupted that's why her eyes are black. She got forgotten because, when she got corrupted the 2 sisters had to use the elements of harmony on her but she disappeared, what happened was he got teleported into a forest, and he hasn't found her way out but she has found people in the forest before and managed to use some of her corrupted power for good by teleport them out. If you have any advice on how I could make this better please tell me.

My main Warrior Cats OC is Redd Symphony, he is this black cat with these like crimson red stripes. He has a sort of heart shaped cowlick on his head. I like to look back at what I did when I was younger.. In the fandom. I was 13 or 14 when I actually got into the show. 2013 and 2014, I had some catching up to do. And of course with being a young, pubescent child I am going to find certain things cool. Yes, I did create an alicorn OC who is colored black, with red eyes.. Once she tried self harm and started biteing and cutting her wings so then she is a normal unicorn. Though it never worked and her wings had a feathering and decaying away look.
