The lyricist is saying if possible borrow someone's grief. That is a literal translation. What he is implying is share someone's sorrow cos then you mitigate that person's troubles to some extent. Shared grief is half the sorrow. There's quote that states: Shared sorrow is lessened, shared joy is increased.

Translation is slightly conveying a different meaning, anyway thats the translator's view point.. First stanza in the simplest form as I understand... "You be the reason for someone's smile.. Share someone's grief if possible.. Have love for someone in your heart (in the general sense staying away from hatred) thats what the life is all about... " This is just how I feel about this song

Prithviraj Kapoor, the founder of Prithvi Theatre, migrated from Peshawar to Mumbai and established himself as a prominent figure in Indian theatre and cinema. He had three sons who all became superstars: Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor. Raj Kapoor, known as the "Showman of Indian Cinema," was a legendary actor and filmmaker. His son, Rishi Kapoor, continued the family legacy as another superstar of Indian cinema. Rishi's son, Ranbir Kapoor, has also achieved great success as an actor. Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor, daughters of Randhir Kapoor, are first cousins of Ranbir Kapoor. This Kapoor family tree is indeed full of stars, with each generation contributing significantly to the rich tapestry of Bollywood.

CORRECT TRANSLATION OF THE SONG: Sacrifice yourself for someone's smile, Take someone's pain and bear it for a while. Have love in your heart for someone's sake, That's what it means to truly live, make no mistake. Though we may be poor in terms of wealth, Our hearts are rich with love, our truest health. A life spent in love's sacrifice, That life blooms, pays the ultimate price. Whether or not anyone believes this to be true, Living this way is what we must do. The bond is of trust, from one heart to another, Our lives are testament to love, unlike any other. Even in death, we'll be remembered with affection, In someone's tears, we'll be a reflection. Every flower will whisper to every bud, anew, Living is all about this view.

@@D_Thing Are you the one who had done the original sucky translation? The translation on the song was really bad. Yes, it took me 20 minutes or so to rhyme and interpret instead of a dumb literal translation. When you are working with songs, you interpret, you don't translate verbatim. You didn't do that either. During that particular phase, Raj Kapoor was chanelling Charlie Chaplin and a sort of Indianised version of Soviet principles. Hence he and his movies were quite popular in USSR, Eastern Europe and countries that were wary of the West. Check out - Awaara (1951) and the reception it got.

The literal translation of the opening sequence is: If your heart falls for someone's smile If you can borrow someone's grief If there is love for someone in your heart This is what is called life (i.e., this is how you know you are alive) PS: I would listen to this song everytime I felt suicidal, just to remind myself that my life has a purpose.

The lyrics of this song is extremely poetic and like a life lesson. I don't think that English subtitles did justice to it 😪 Old songs BEST part are always their lyrics. That's why we still sing them. Evergreen for a reason ❤

The lyrics are penned by Shailendra, and the music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. The song is sung by Mukesh, one of the most iconic playback singers of Bollywood. The lyrics of the song convey a message of hope, positivity, and compassion. The singer expresses a willingness to sacrifice everything for the smile of a loved one. The phrase "Kisi ki muskurahaton pe ho nisar" translates to "Let your sacrifices be for someone's smiles," highlighting the selfless nature of love and kindness.

So this song is mostly shot on the Band Stand, Bandra in Bombay. Much of it is shot in front of a building that is now Shahrukh Khan's house and now hidden from the public. The last shot where the road turns, the corner is the building where Salman Khan lives. It is actually where his father, Salim Khan lives, along with all his sons.

For the lyrics, a large majority of people hear a word "Udhaar", but in my opinion, it's actually "Utha" meaning Take! But I agree the translation in subs is poor, as always. So here is my version of subs for the first and main stanza. "If you are desperate to see someone's smiles, If you can possibly get it then take someone's grief, If there exists love in your heart for someone, That's what living life is all about"

A made-in-heaven pair of Raj Kapoor &, Mukesh has given us the most Philosophical songs, which are also musically, lyrically and visually charismatic !!! A wealth of listening in itself, imparting life's philosophy with joy and peace of mind. I wish if you could comprehend the exact meaning of the lyrics!!! During my teenage I was a dedicated fan of both of them, thanks to Chitrahaar (a song based TV program); they still hold a significantly high position in my heart. When they worked together, they always created a masterpiece!!! Please check out their other songs below with the same philosophical vibes. Sajan re jhooth mat bolo...
