Anathema premiere the first track "Springfield" from new album The Optimist, out now - found.ee/The_Op...
Daniel Cavanagh: "Here we present the song 'Springfield', it’s actually the song that closed our unforgettable Wembley gig with Opeth and it seemed to be a track that just fell into place without much effort. It seemed to do itself. The song forms part of a narrative that runs through The Optimist album, it’s a narrative that begins where A Fine Day To Exit left off. The album is a journey. The songs are ambiguous. There is no right or wrong way to take them. Make of them what you will.”
Anathema’s eleventh full-length The Optimist is due for release on 9th June through Kscope, where the ambient rockers will reveal some of the darkest, most challenging and unexpected music the sextet have put their name to.
Anathema, led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, along with drummer John Douglas, singer Lee Douglas, bassist Jamie Cavanagh and drummer/keyboardist Daniel Cardoso began recording The Optimist in the winter of 2016 at Attica Audio in Donegal, Ireland and then finished at Castle Of Doom studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan [Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals] at the helm and was mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

I first heared about anathema in 2002 when a local metal radio sender called "Zosh " played "They Die" From the Crestfallen EP which was allready 10 years old back then. i was quite surprised when i realised in 2002 that every album was completely different. Dying Wish is allready so different from the stuff they did on Crestfallen. tbh i think every album is good. But i really loved anathema the most on Alternative4 and Judgement. I still think they make quite some good music nowadays but for my personal taste it has gone progressive "pop " a bit too much

This brilliant piece of music really illustrates what Vincent just said about working with producer Tony Doogan : “he suggested that we record as a live band, which we hadn’t done for years. Having played a few tunes on the last tour, we were ready for that. Tony wanted to capture that energy you can only get with everyone facing each other… it makes a big difference." :)))

I think part of that problem is people's experience with prog, they seem to think it dictates a very strict moment in time in the 70s and that all prog is going to sound like Yes, Genesis etc, when the true definition of prog suggests that you should always be moving music forward to keep with the times.

Great new track, I always love how much musical & emotional intensity you're able to give and share with us... :) But... I have only one reservation, if I may say so : one more time it's building to a crescendo, with repetitive patterns. May be this is a little bit across the board with many of your compositions ?!... I hope there'll be various structures and atmospheres in this new LP. I really love being surprised by the creative ideas and artistic bias by the Artists who I'm a big fan of ! So, what d'you think ?...

Yes, those crescendos works really good with the emotional music of the band, but would be nice to hear other structures too.

Thanks, that's what I mean ! :) I'm obviously a big fan of Danny/Vincent Cavanagh's work & style, but for an exemple I have to say that I really love how John Douglas gave kind of a great renewal in the structures and the musical colours in previous albums. (the title-track in "Distant Satellites" or "The storm before the calm" in "Weather Systems", for instance)... :) Anyway, every member here is important in the whole Creative Force. Not to mention Lee Douglas' amazing and moving voice + great sensitivity. And Daniel Cardoso and Jamie Cavanagh ! They're all so talented ! :)

Julian Joyce I get your point but keep in mind the album is a sequel to A fine day to exit so it makes sense to me that it follows a similar pattern of structure as the songs in that album. The lyrics of this song are almost the exact same of two lines from the song Barriers "how did we get here? Life don't belong here". I for one love this style, it's very inspiring. Anathema are poets who convey the imagery of their poems with both prose and music.

@DannyCavanagh2011 Wow ! :) Thanks a lot for reacting here and confirming that it's gonna be a rich experience with a wide range of musical & emotional shapes. :) You must be very eager to share this newborn album with all of us - and with many other "Anathema's World newcomers". I guess "The Optimist" has a special place from a creative point of view... "9th June" : I'm really looking forward to it !
@julianjoyce2577
@julianjoyce2577 7 жыл бұрын
Mariem Boukadi , thanks for your point of view, subtly explained ! :) But now, after Danny's own words, I'm quite sure that "The Optimist" will not only be stuck in "similar patterns of structure", even with reference to A Fine Day To Exit. And so, yeah, I'm really excited by listening some surprising stuff ! :)
