I mainly use HSS and carbide tipped tools, but I prefer fast cutters. I'll explain why.
1. HSS cutters are much easier to sharpen.
2. It is possible to grind cutters of different shapes from a quick cutter quickly and easily with the help of angle grinders.
From a solid bar, I grind almost any cutter: through, through-persistent, cut-off, boring, threaded, grooving.
Often I want fancy little incisors that you can't buy. For example, to make balls with Plato's bodies inside:

This video shows how I make cutters from a quick cut.
3. Fast cuts are less brittle than carbide inserts.
4. If the cutter is made from a solid piece of quick cutter, then it can be sharpened as it is shortened many times and from both ends. And cutters with carbide inserts are limited by the length of the insert.
5. Long HSS cutters, for example 120 mm long, can be used to make two cutters 60 mm each. How I do it is shown in this video.
6. HSS cutters are cheaper than carbide cutters.
7. High speed cutters provide a cleaner surface compared to carbide inserts.
8. The machines I have are low-power. For example, the power of the electric motor of the MN-80 lathe is only 370 W. Therefore, there is no need to have more heat-resistant carbide cutters.
When making cutters with angle grinders, the cutter gets very hot and the HSS can be tempered. Therefore, it has to be cooled with water. But thermal cycling reduces the strength of the cutter. Therefore, I cool the cutter in air, and for acceleration I undertake to sharpen several cutters at once. I sharpen the incisors in a few steps, in a circle.
For those who doubt whether it is worth using cutters from a quick cut, let me remind you that almost all drills, countersinks, reamers are made from a quick cut; taps and dies; almost all cut-off and slot milling cutters, as well as end mills, modular and shaped cutters. Even for Geller saws, replaceable inserts are made from a quick cut.
Nowadays, the P6M5 fast cutter is mainly used. Better, of course, quick cutters P18 and P9K5.
The material of all these cutting tools has almost the same hardness, around 64 HRC.
Tools made from all these materials do not allow high cutting data. On large machines, there is a circulating coolant cooling system. And for hobbyists, for amateurs, there are no high modes, since the machines are low-power.
Therefore, HSS cutters can be used.
Shows how I resharpen the incisors.
I take into work two solid high-speed cutters at once: through and through persistent. Section 8x8, length 120 mm.
From these two long unilateral incisors, four bilateral incisors can be made for a total of eight different incisors.
But I, in addition to the existing groove, cut-off, boring thrust, groove for the inner groove and threaded inner.
I sharpen 4 incisors at once, one by one, so that they have time to cool in a natural way, without cooling in water.
I cut the cutters in the vise in half. Received 4 blanks. Using the angle grinder, I will pre-process it, roughly. The cutting edge is finally formed and sharpening is performed already on the diamond wheel.
The incisors are shown to work.
This is how I make homemade HSS turning tools for myself.
