Each kidney consists of an outer layer called the renal cortex, an inner region called the renal medulla, and a central cavity called the renal pelvis.
Nephrons, the functional units of the kidney, are located in the renal cortex and medulla.
The renal pelvis collects urine produced by the nephrons and transports it to the ureter.
The kidneys receive a significant amount of blood flow through the renal arteries, which branch off from the abdominal aorta.
Blood is filtered through a network of tiny blood vessels within the nephrons called glomeruli.
Blood enters the kidneys through the renal arteries, and pressure forces plasma and dissolved substances through the walls of the glomeruli into the renal tubules.
This process, known as glomerular filtration, forms a filtrate containing water, electrolytes, glucose, and waste products.
As the filtrate passes through the renal tubules, essential substances such as glucose, amino acids, and electrolytes are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.
Reabsorption occurs selectively to maintain the body's balance of water and electrolytes.
Excretion:
The final product of kidney function is urine, which is composed of water, electrolytes, urea, and other waste products.
Urine passes from the renal pelvis into the ureters, which transport it to the urinary bladder for storage until it is excreted from the body through the urethra.
Understanding the intricate anatomy and physiology of the kidneys is crucial for appreciating their vital role in maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body.
