Allegedly, the final movie used the studio recordings of the actors, not the recordings of ABBA(R) themselves. But if those actor studio recordings were made after filming, they may have danced to the original ABBA track.

John Crower Doe I know it’s not ABBA singing. Movies usually prerecord the soundtrack to then use while filming. The versions of the songs they use in the movie are slightly different than the originals, so it really wouldn’t make sense to use the ABBA versions. What I meant was, if they are lip syncing to the recording of their soundtrack, why is it important for them to sound good live/hit the right notes, etc.?

idkjade Its less about sounding good live and more about making it so the audio tracks and mouth movements match up, as well as other things. While a lot of people may think lip syncing to a song is a silent thing, that’s far from the truth, in fact, lip syncing silently is much harder when acting a scene out due to you having to restrain yourself from actually singing a song you’ve been practicing for ages(as well as making it harder to get into character because you aren’t singing the lines, therefore technically your character isn’t saying anything in that scene for the other actor to react to) Usually the vocal tracks are recorded before filming, that way they can match up everything as well as adjust a scene to better fit the length of the song. (You might have an idea of you want to happen in a scene, but until the Vocal Track is recorded you won’t be able to make adjustments to have the scene fit the duration of the song, or adjust/add parts to fit how the song is sung by the actors) In the end, it just makes it easier for everyone if they all sing the lyrics, even if the soundtrack is put over the scene, they have to make an effort to make the audience really believe they are hearing the characters sing, even if it’s only for a minute.

I just don't understand why they would be concerned with the vocals at that point in the game. The words and phrasing are important, but it doesn't matter if they sound terrible when filming because it's going to be dubbed anyway.
