ANATOMY OF A SAILBOAT SCAM delves into a recent experience a friend of mine and I had. He's in the market for a new used sailboat. His old Ericson 35 finally gave up the ghost and he's in the market to find another one. The first Ericson 35 he found didn't receive a favorable survey. Then we looked at an Ericson 32-3 that I found him on Craigslist. It looked like it was going to be the perfect boat - heck, even the description said it was in excellent condition and meticulously maintained...What could possibly be wrong with it? Right? Right...
Watch and learn how sellers and brokers will go to great lengths to not only get you to look at a boat, but also buy a boat that is NOT what it appears. The lesson learned: ALWAYS go with a wing man to look at a boat you're interested in AND always get a survey if the purchase price point warrants it. ANATOMY OF A SAILBOAT SCAM is intended to inform you and help you as you move toward what could be a huge financial investment. You do not want to buy a lemon - or be scammed into something that is not what it appears to be. So, I as I always say, Trust but Verify. Just because an ad says a boat is in "excellent condition" - do NOT believe it until you see it - and see all of it. This is a cautionary tale!
Enjoy.
