If you two were to Gestimate how much would it cost to make this thing ready to go? Ballpark? 20k 50k?
@boatfools5 күн бұрын
Honestly, if the engine checks out and a survey doesn’t uncover anything unusual, just the cost to commission and drop her in the water. Most of the work appears to be cosmetic - but that can add up, unless you can DIY. It also depends what your sailing plans are. If you want it perfect, $20k seems like a reasonable starting place, especially if older sails are ok. But if you need new sails, that’s another $15k. But she comes with two sets so you could get by for few seasons, I reckon. But if the engine is good, which it appears to be, and the moisture is superficial, you could be good for a bit!

Wow! This is a gorgeous sailboat! This is your favorite chef/caterer from PA again, lol! In my trying to absorb as much as I can about sailing and sailboats, I've heard of and read about these boats and how well-made and seaworthy they are. I'm the newbie who desperately wants to learn to sail. In your expert sailors' opinion, what would you gentlemen do first, second and third if you bought this boat? I'm just trying to understand how much work this would entail. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you both are saying in the video that whoever is lucky enough to buy this boat you could put it in the water right away and sail her while working on her - is that correct? I really like the teak decks but I've heard fairly often from you guys and other comments I see on various sites that many sailors don't want the teak because it's a lot of maintenance but I feel it looks so nice with the wood decks. Are they really a lot to maintain? Is it something you must sand and refinish every year? I didn't notice any screws holding the decking down like I've seen on other sailboats. How are these held down? Also, is it a concern to have a deck-stepped mast vs a keel-stepped one? I thought that a keel-stepped mast is stronger. Am I incorrect about that? One other thing, what is that compression post for? Is that just under the mast to help support it? If so, does it connect to the keel? I would love to own this sailboat I just wish I could sail and had a place to keep her. The asking price is too high for me. Wonder what a fair price for it would be the way she sits? That's another thing being new to all this is I have no idea what a fair price would be. When you pay for a survey, does the surveyor tell you what a fair price range would be? Thank you gentlemen for making another great video (first one of the new year!) with an absolutely beautiful sailboat. I learn a lot from them and I appreciate your knowledge and all the time it must take you to do this! Happy New Year!
@@boatfools sorry about that guys. I just get drawn into these boats/videos and because I don't know much about the sport my brain conjures up all these thoughts and questions, lol! You don't know how blessed you are just to be able to see sailboats every day - or maybe you do. I wish I could be there and tour them to see and learn. I'll send an email to you. Blessed Sunday to you!

I’d suggest start looking at boat sales online for the models you are looking at. There is worldwide sales data all in one place. You will get a good feel for what the price should be after a few months of looking at hundreds of boats. I’d suggest go small and make sure you enjoy it as much as you believe. Then sell the small boat and upgrade. It’s easy to get a good deal on a smaller setup knowing its not your forever boat. Good luck

I really like what you guys are doing. Even jealous. But I have a question. On the boats that are 20 years old and older, what is the average condition of the keel bolts on boats that have them. Of course you can't see deep into the keel, but the top where the nut screws into the bolts may also be indicative of condition. Is there a way to get a sense of the condition of the bolts - lots of rust, minor rust, cracks etc?. Other than hauling and removing the keel to replace, check. That's the only concern I have regarding older boats. This is based on having rebuild the floors and the keel knuckle on the hull where the keel meets the bottom of the hull on a typical 70s IOR hull 35 ft.
@boatfools4 күн бұрын
This is a good question. All of the boats mentioned in this episode have encapsulated keels - or encapsulated keels with centerboards. In short: no keel bolts to worry about. The ballast is in a cavity within the fiberglass. This is pretty ideal. It's not to say that a bolted on fin keel is any less desirable, it's just one less worry. Keel bolts can last a very, very long time - typically the life of the boat (but there are always exceptions). The keel bolt nuts need to be torqued now and then, and they should be kept clean and as dry as possible, but that's really it. A good surveyor will be able to suggest whether there is reason for concern when looking at a prospective boat.
@kenbeiser44436 күн бұрын
Teak decks are actually very little maintenance. The key is to be sure they are sealed underneath . Keep some Teak Deck Systems caulk to repair seams as necessary. My teak deck lasted over 42 years and could have gone longer.
@philipmayo48656 күн бұрын
Is this really true? I'm a newbie to sailing and I love all the wood on the older sailboats. In my search to learn as much as I can about sailing one of the most common comments I read is that wooden decks (and all the other wooden trim/brightwork as I've learned is the correct term for all this) is frowned upon. I think they're beautiful. What kind of regular maintenance is needed to keep these decks and other wooden areas in top shape? What did you do in all your years of sailing, sir? Also, what kind of sailboat did you have for 42 years?

"quintessential blue water cruisers" except for the truly awful sailing performance, a displacement close to a medium size cathedral with similar hydrodynamics. Add no room, little storage, difficult handling under power, very inneficient rig and a maintenance heavy exterior and they are a real winner. I have never understood Americans obsession with truly woeful motisailors like these. I have had the misfortune of delivering four HC's and they are in no way fit for purpose.

@deerfootnz6 күн бұрын
@veganchildsoldier9243 the HC is a low volume boat, hence less storage than some more suitable higher volume boats. Compare with a Morris 486 which is a smaller boat in that it is lighter.

@@deerfootnz They're great bluewater (open ocean) sailing boats. If you want to sail around in the harbour buy a Beneteau.
@deerfootnz6 күн бұрын
@@OhAwe They are not. I have delivered four of various sizes in a 40 year 200,000 mile career. Awful boats that have a windward performance that is at best borderline dangerous. I am no advocate of modern production boats at all, but a Beneteau will probably sail upwind in light air much better than any 18th century fat long keel double ender. These things are appalling.

We had a 78 for thirty years. It was a great boat. My fave berth was the pilot berth, somewhere around 1982 that changed to bookshelves but I am sure that if you had it built the PB could be included. Those winches are small, we upgraded ours, we raced the boat. It’s not a light air boat but in heavy air we were very comfortable and safe which made it a lot of fun. We raced it hard which led to some minor leaks around the chainplates which was fixed. With a block of ice and a couple bags of cubes we had cold food and drinks for almost a week. Keep tension on the centerboard line, that jammed on us a couple times until we learned! We slept 8 a few times racing and cruising to Maine, no problem but the boat got warm, LOL! It was a great boat, timeless lines, pleasing lines. I think we paid $65k in 1978, had it built in North Carolina. The new owner should be very happy with this boat.
