Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the muscle and nerve anatomy of the lower leg.
There are fourteen muscles within the lower leg.
5 extensors in the anterior compartment: these muscles are anterior to the tibia, fibula and the interosseous membrane.
1-Tibialis anterior
2-Extensor hallucis longus
3-Extensor digitorum longus
4-Peroneus tertiurs muscle
5-Extensor digirotum brevis muscle
The extensor muscle group is present within the anterior muscle compartment of the leg. The anterior compartment is usually involved with compartment syndrome.
These five muscles are supplied by the deep peroneal nerve.
2 peroneal muscles in the lateral compartment
1-Peroneus brevis
2-Peroneus longus
The peroneal muscles are situated on the outer side of the lower leg and their tendons attach to the foot. Near the ankle the peroneus brevis is closer to the fibula. There are two peroneal retinacula which hold the two peroneal tendons at the ankle. The superior retinacula is the important one.
Innervation of the peroneal tendons: superficial peroneal nerve.
7 flexors in the posterior compartment
1-Gastrocnemius
2-Soleus
3-Plantaris
4-Popliteus
5-Tibialis posterior: inverter of the foot.
6-Flexor digitorum longus
7-Flexor hallucis longus
The muscles of the posterior compartment syndrome of the leg are all supplied by the tibial nerve.
Medial muscles and nerves
Think “ Tom, Dick & nervous Harry” to remember the: Tibialis posterior, Flexor Digitorum longus & Flexor Halluics longus.

great video! but just one note I think you labeled the posterior compartment bones wrong. It should be the opposite, Fibula on top and Tibia on the bottom.

Does anybody know anything about a blow to the area where the tibialis posterior muscle meets the fibula bone about four inches up from the ankle? I had a pretty bad impact blow there when I was younger and never went to the doctor. Since then I've been left with a dent on my leg in that spot and pretty intense pain to the touch. It's been nearly 20 years since this injury.

Hi, I experienced a sprain at my right back (around the waist or pelvic) resulting in a very acute pain which has now turned into chronic pain from my waist all the way to the foot for over 5 weeks now. About 2 weeks ago I noticed some funny change in my walking especially when stepping on the right foot. My lower leg (from the ankle joint to the toes) wabbles or snaps down as soon as I step on the heel, unlike the left foot which is able to tension down normally. I feel weakness in my entire right leg as some nerves seem to be unable to properly function. Please is there a remedy? Can this be reversed? Will I ever regain my walking? Please help.
