True words! I once read a statement from a neuro scientist, where he said an arrow has to move with at least 700 fps to beat the reflexes of a deer and hit it before it dogdes away at 30-40 yds. Unfortunately i can't remember where i found that. So it doesn't matter if you arrow is going 250 or 320 fps.

Love the channel, lots of great points, but one thing I’d like to mention as food for thought. The point you made about being able to show multiple deer moving after arrow release isn’t entirely fair or objective. Yes your target will move and you should be aware of that, but the distance matters. I don’t shoot animals past 30 BUT There are also many videos of long shots where the animal doesn’t move a bit. Why is this? It’s only natural for any species, prey or predator, to react move violently to closer threats. This is a very easy and provable thing to conduct an experiment on. Everyone has jumped out from behind the hall corner to scare a family member and they freak out. Well try it from across the yard and see what they do. You probably never even did that because you knew it wouldn’t have the effect you wanted! bang on your stand when a deer is right below you and observe the reaction, then bang on it when one is 70 yards away and observe. It’s not nearly the same because they (as well as humans) can instantly register if that noise presents an immediate threat. I’m not advocating for long shots unless you are very well trained, just food for thought and trying to be fair and objective.

Stupidest thing I’ve ever heard! More speed allows you to use a heavier arrow which will penetrate more, speed gives you a flatter trajectory which makes you more accurate incase your yardage is a bit off or the animal takes a few steps and stops again, speed gets to the animal quicker so it has less time to move. Speed gives you smaller pin gaps, saves re ranging an animal. A heavier faster arrow will blow through ribs better, leave an entry and exit hole for a better blood trail and the animal to bleed out quicker. Heavier faster arrow will ram through brush better, Allow you to shoot through a small window of trees or branches better. A heavier arrow, moving faster and hitting the same spot is a more lethal set up then a slower lighter arrow hitting the same spot. That’s not really negotiable

@@louisbailey4900 you obviously don’t know a lot about hunting or shooting! When you have a flatter trajectory you can be off by 3 or 4 inches and still hit the same spot your aiming for because the flatter trajectory has less loop to it. A great example of that is I have a 70 pound and an 80 pound bow. On my 70 pound bow if I’m shooting at 60 yards and my shot breaks low I may go under the animal. If the animal takes 3 steps further and stops I’ll shoot under the animal. With my 80 pound bow I still hit the same spot due to the flatter trajectory. With my 80 pound bow my 20 yard pin hits the same all the way out to 38 yards. If I used a 70 pound bow that would not be the case. Again because you clearly did not understand. If my shot breaks low on a faster arrow it will hold its trajectory and will still hit the mark. A slower arrow I might miss my 5-10 inches on the same shot because it will drop more. Not to sure why you can’t comprehend that but I hope it helps

I think you are out in left field but I waited until you invited me to comment before I did 😉 I don't think you are way off base, but I don't agree with your logic for my situation out west and I don't agree with not ranging shots. As far as speed goes, I will gladly give up a bit of speed for more energy on target at range. You are right, deer move a lot, especially the skittish coues deer I am so fond of hunting. You hit the nail on the head in a recent video though when you said it does not matter how fast your arrow is, it isn't beating the sound there. So there are a number of considerations to think about. One, the more energy transferred from your bow to the projectile, the better. The obvious advantages of that are having more energy to work with to start and less energy that your bow has to turn in to sound. Two, heavier projectiles retain more energy down range, which is pretty critical at 50 yards or so. I am bewildered that with rifles, the benefits of higher bc at range is not even a debate, but in the archery world, somehow people are not convinced. Simply put, increased mass with the same coefficient of drag and same cross sectional area makes for higher ballistics coefficient which means both more retained energy downrange and less wind drift, which is ideal for maximizing precision and for ensuring that your broadhead will do its job even when the animal moves and your arrow does not hit where you intended (how bad did that run on sentence bother you Mr. English teacher? 😉). It is going to miss your intended spot anyways if the animal is going to move. With that in mind, know that your chance at needing to break bone is going up a lot when you shoot at distance regardless of the velocity of your arrow. A light arrow is the wrong tool for the job at range even if it is faster. This is of course assuming that all arrows we are talking about are tuned well. That is a must and nobody who knows anything is advocating for shooting arrows that fly poorly. Lighter arrows with flatter trajectory are a better setup, like you said recently, if you are hunting dense woods with small windows to shoot through with lots of overhanging branches, but not for long range. As far as ranging goes, I have no doubt that people who are a good judge of range and don't range every shot will take home more deer than I will. I also will bet that the average person who thinks they are good at ranging will wound more deer than I will because of poor shots. Nobody will die of starvation if I don't bring home a deer, so I am perfectly fine not shooting if I don't have the opportunity to range, even if it is on a 110" coues buck. "Too bad I didn't have the opportunity to range that deer and KNOW I am making an ethical shot" is a lot better of a feeling than "wow was I wrong about that yardage and that was horrific to watch." I have done that before with a rifle and I assure you, that was a self correcting mistake. All that being said, I am not one to complain about the industry and them advertising using speed. I think for hunting bows, it would be more useful to all kinds of hunters to build a KE curve with arrows of different mass shot from a standard draw length and poundage. That would give hunters useful information regardless of what type of arrow setup they use. It also might show some bows to be more efficient at transferring energy. I don't expect that to happen though and it will never happen unless peoples' mentality towards arrow ballistics fundamentally changes. IBO is really just a marketing tool though because guys like big numbers and having a bigger number than the next guy. It's not something to complain about, it just is what it is. Anyhow, I don't agree with your assessment, but I find you to be pretty rational and I like your content, so keep up the good work. Good luck this fall. Hopefully your other spots are more productive than the spot you just checked.

Takes some time but worth it. I’ll gladly shoot a clam deer at 45 as opposed a skittish deer at 20. Ranging isn’t hard but it is a process. A quiet 250 fps bow is deadly to 50 of you have the skill to make the shot and have done your ranging homework.

About time someone gave a reality check to the real hunting deal, I'm in Florida I shoot two bows pse xs 60 lbs. And a old gold eagle updated equipment 77 lbs 500 grn. Arrow on pse and 625-650 on the golden eagle Florida is heavy under brush and tree's most shots are 30 yards and under so doing the math I opted for pass thru verses the so called speed arrow and the truth be told finding the right foc.your shots are smoother and more accurate and you surprisingly will find a little more forgiving, anyway keep up the good work man you got a fan in Florida.

Quick fletch is great until you get a tear, and then the whole thing falls apart. I'll take glued on vanes 99% of the time. But they're good for quick fix. I would much rather take Zinger fletchings over the shrink tubing stuff. Infinitely more durable.

when I started archery, I couldn't get my thoughts around fletching my own arrows - it didn't take long and I changed my mind, and while it takes some time to get there, overall it just has so many advantages (besides that arrow building can be very rewarding in itself): cost savings, don't having to run to a shop if you lost a fletching on just one arrow, building exactly the arrow you want for your specific needs ....I believe most of us who went through this really appreciated the feeling you get when achieving a "perfect arrow" for the first time without making a mess with the glue 😁 ... but once you learned it it's like "bicycle riding" ... 😀

Before I hunted deer in my youth, i was taught to hunt small game , And as an adult learning the compound bow ( 2nd year) I shot targets until I was happy with my ability to hunt , I started on ( Australia ) Rabbits , fox's , then under 30 yards small deer , and I wont shoot over 30, as I cant predict a fast fill . I have a rifle for the long shots, but their is something raw and natural and quiet about Bow hunting . 60lbs , fixed blade ,400 grain, 260ish fps , 27 1/2 draw , PSE drive nxt , I always shot small game before I go for deer.

Great take on "the industry". I also don't know where this "selling speed" accusation has been coming from lately. Most companies have been sticking to the 330-345 advertised IBO speed for the past few years but the modularity and ease of tuning has been where the significant improvements have been. Not to mention manufacturers are achieving those speeds with the most comfortable to shoot platforms we have ever had. I guess when things get too good people complain about marketing?

The problem with speed advertising, is that it’s not what kills, which leads to poor arrow builds. A bow being fast is excellent, dumping arrow weight for a chrono speed is not.

For years I have been shooting an arrow thats 375-385 gr and always got complete pass throughs on white tail when placement is spot on and perfect. I have hit the shoulder and spine which obviously aren't ideal with a bow thats ibo is 308fps and actual speed was 258fps. This year I bought a Bowtech Solution with an IBO of 346 and I bought it to be able to strictly increase my arrow speed in the woods

Awesome to see another Average Jack Archery 🏹 video. What a good vlog rant while scouting. Always good to clarify some misconceptions by many. I actually got a newer bow 🏹 a week before my wedding on August 20th. A Prime Black 3 that the owner of the new local archery 🏹 shop only ran 50 shots through it. I switched my Black Gold 5 pin (not sure why I have 5 pin instead of 3 since I doubt that I shoot past 35 yards at whitetail deer 🦌(15, 25, 35) and that Hamskea Primer rest to it and put the 4 pin Trophy Ridge back on and new Trophy Ridge whisker biscuit on the old PSE bow that you saw. After shooting my new bow at 65 pounds and 29.5 in draw and going back to the 60 lb old bow it felt so easy to draw. Sadly I only have 4 arrows of my Carbon Xpress Mayhem SDS 350s for season. They don’t sell that arrow at Cabela’s anymore. I might have to order some arrows possibly from Sirius, Victory or Black Eagle 🦅 once I get back home from my Alaskan waterfowl and fishing 🎣 trip the third week of September. Super tight window and season will already have started on the 25th. I hate being last minute but my wife and I were planning a wedding 💒

You talk really fast for someone raised in the south. I can agree with a lot of what you say. I have shot over 700 grains at 160 FPS. IT works. It is pretty quiet, but deer still move. Archers are not breaking the second barrier. Animals are going to react to sound. The difference of 22 or 25 yards shooting 260 FPS is negligible. I. Am just saying that I am shooting over 600 grains, and I really don't care if a deer is 22 or 25 yards. If the deer is thirty yards. My second pin needs to be in the bottom of the kill zone. Learn your equipment. Know your limitations, and realize your not rifle hunting.

I remember the first doe I shot at she was @ 20 I think atleast it was 20 paces to my pace standards. She jumped the KAAPOOWWWW CLANK BANG TWANAAANG. Kills me the amount of people who use an expandable broadhead strictly because they can't get a fixed blade to shoot like their field points. I would rather take the time to tune my bow right. And do it early instead of waiting til the week before season starts.

Tuning broadhead arrows always forces me to correct my bad shooting habits. It was a pain at first but quickly became a labor of love when I saw how much better it made me in short periods of time as I focused on eliminating bad habits. I also recommend to anybody shooting non-vented fixed blades to invest in a rest with micro-adjustability. My wife's bow has an AAE Pro rest and I have an older, basic QAD. Hers is way easier to mess with than mine.

not everyone knows how. It's a process, and some people are daunted by that. A good expandable on a heavy enough arrow will kill a dear. There is still no substitute for a well tuned set up but its not always as easy as moving a rest around and not everyone has access to a bowpress or a good bowtech. I will never shoot an expandable but I have good resources available and not everyone does.

My fav is these broadheads suck because they can't tune a bow. Granted mine is paper tuned, walked backed and bareshafted and 90% of Broadhead will hit with my field right out of the gate. But the ones I really want to work with my bow always hit left 6-8 inches drives me nuts as the bows tuned, think they just need more vanes.

I practice out to 100 yards and go to TAC, where shots border on ridiculous to make and I have great success (2 sandwich territory)... but I would never take a shot on a WT outside of 25 yards, maybe 30 (which is pushing it). And there are guys that pick up a bow a week before the season starts, shooting a ridiculous arrow setup that reduces their chances of distance judging accuracy, and out of an untuned bow to boot. It's a rant more people need to hear imo. BTW, I'd like to know more about the Huntworth backpack. Reviews?

I'm another one of those guys that stretch it out: like 100 plus yards. This makes the shorter "real" hunting distance like 20 to 30 yards very doable. Anything further than that and my prey are jumping the string. I was lucky (and desperate) and hit a Blacktail at 53 yards but I will never do that again. Of all my shots I am not nor will ever be proud of that shot. I'd rather have my hunt join me in a cup of tea and a nice BLT. 😉

Enjoyed the rant, Nate! I guess I am in the bitchin about speed category. My beef is that it seems like that is the focus of some manufacturers regardless of evolving their lines. For instance, I loved Matthews and cut my original teeth with them, but they kept making the same bow over and over again just faster (vertix, vxr, v3....) and not adding any other features like you see in bowtech and elite (deadlock and set). More so they made their bows unforgiving as you can imagine in both setup and maintenance AND shooting. I had to finally ditch my Matthews and move to BT and Elite because they were just too much a PITA. So that's where I think some of the beef with speed is - myopic chasing speed. I got nothing against making bow faster - it means more energy - but don't sacrifice everything else in the bow's features for it. Also want to agree with your gripe about learning to range. I rarely if ever get a chance to pull a range finder out and range anything from 1 - 1000 yards (the later not with a bow). I had to learn in my service how to range by my eyes and to date - even at long ranges they have rarely failed me. Bow hunters particularly need to learn and practice this skill!!

I've been a Mathews guy for years, but I wont buy another one ever again, if they dont come up with an adjustable mods on their bows. Because 9 times out of 10 the draw lengths run long, and then you end up spending more money on new mods. I'm looking forward to the 2022 Darton lineup.
