I thought about doing this with deer fur as I use that fly tying and salvage the hide. Also thought about doing this with the contents from milk weed pods so I can pluck some here and there to check the wind direction they make beaver fur silencers

You can also make catwhiskers from bicycle tube. It works just fine as the original one

I have always loved these. I think they work better than anything else for a compound bow but nobody seems to use them anymore. I had a pro shop tell me today that it's because you lose too much speed & that I would be better off using a heavier arrow to quiet it down & getting some penetration for that speed loss. Have you used a chronograph to see how much speed loss you get vs something like cat whiskers or another common silencer?

wht240sxka Once ever other week during peak use. (4-5 days a week, at least 30 arrows per day) And Bohning Text Tite! Always loved Bohning products and their string wax I think is top notch.

The yarn is so soft and as long as you aren't packing the balls too tight, the potential shortening is so negligible it's not even worth worrying about. :)

do you get the same silencing effects with the string as you would a rubber silencer?

Honestly, not with a compound over 55ish pounds I've found (In the string.). For trad bows and lower poundage compounds I've found them comparable if not better. The yarn just isn't durable enough to last with those high poundage shots in the string. Although they shoot just fine in the cables. Thanks for the comments and questions!

The downside for trad shooters like me is that the beaver and these collapse during rain. I perfer the rubber catwhiskers :)

Agreed! But I avoid trad equipment in the rain at all costs anyways. My recurves are fair-weather-fans in archery season. ;) Thanks for commenting!

Go and get some high-weight braided fishing line. Looking for 30# and higher line weight. Instead of running it around 20 or so times, run it 50 or 60 around a jig. Make them a little long, and then trim them to about a half to 3/4 of an inch. You'll have all-weather string dampeners.
