Over the last 10 years of installing hundreds of drawer slides, I’ve come up with a unique method that makes installing full extension drawer slides easy. No math, no figuring, and no adjusting, so much easier and faster than any other way of installing full extension drawer slides.

My late hubby's step-dad was a master craftsman who built amazing furniture. One trick he always used was to set the drawer slides just a hair off level, sloping toward the back of the furniture piece (using the vertical adjustment slot on the slide). The off-level was slight enough that the drawer never bound, and the front lined up just fine, but it was enough to make the drawer self-closing. You'd just give it a tiny, gentle push, and it would glide all the way closed by itself. Brilliant!

@@williamporter9604 you can also put screws, from the inside of the drawer, through the front panel, with just the tip protruding to the outside. Then put the draw face in position and give it a tap to transfer the screw position onto the backside. Now you know where to drill it

Most of my carpentry efforts start with me measuring twice and then cutting short! A couple of months ago I built my very first pair of drawers - similar size to the one Ana built for this video. I fitted the slides onto cut off pieces of the same material I used for the drawers so that I could determine the width - just as Ana demonstrated. The first drawer fitted damn near perfectly - it opens and closes easily. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself. The second drawer was / is a disaster. Way out of alignment. I doubled checked the dimensions, relative height and levels of the sliders etc. all to no avail. Removed and refitted the sliders and whilst not as bad as previous it still won't close properly. Double checked all the measurements again, fitted the sliders a bit higher so that I could make sure I was screwing them in level. Still no good. Slamming the drawer and cursing didn't help either. Ana has inspired me to have another go. I'll start from scratch - new timber & new sliders. This time I'll follow Ana's tip of using the screw holes to mark a line for the sliders.

When putting the front piece on the drawer, you can figure out and mark where you want the handles. Put the front piece on your bench and drill the holes for the handles through the front piece. Then just put some temporary screws into those holes to mount the front piece onto the drawer body. Then install screws from the back like you did, then take the temp screws on the front side out and mount the handles in the drilled holes. No nails and no filler needed.

It was easy but took us some time because we had to put a table saw together and buy some wood. We also watched Ana’s video on how to use the Ryobi nail gun which was sooo helpful . Ryobi should be very grateful for Ana’s work because she is why I bought the nail gun and also made the drawer. Cant wait to make more!

Instead of driving a small pin nail into the face of the drawer head, try using 3m double stick tape. Same idea, except sandwich the tape between the drawer head and the drawer. It definitely holds the drawer head long enough to drill from behind and will compress when you tighten the screw from within the drawer. I use two 1" to 1-1/2" pieces of tape, one on either end at approx. where I'll drive the screw. The screws on the drawer pulls will further compress the tape.

I was thinking of the double sided tape as well, plus it gives you the option of repositioning if you don’t get it bang on the first time. Speaking from experience. 🙂

I've still had problems with the tape having just a little too much thickness. I prefer to just hold the drawer front in position with shims or playing cars, and then just go ahead and drill the holes for the drawer pulls. Use a couple screws to hold the front in place while you open the drawer, add the actual screws inside, then remove the first screws and use those holes for the pulls.

Great Video, thank you. When squaring the box with the bottom, after doing one end of corners like you did, I then square up the other two corners. After that I make sure the long sides are not bowed in the middle by nailing the middles, and then you can hit the rest of the nails around the frame. Learned this trick making shelves with cheap 2x4s.

I prefer to pre-make the drawers myself but this is an interesting idea, maybe I’ll give it a try. I always err on the small side with my drawing widths, it’s a lot easier to shim the slides with fender washers than to make the drawers narrower after the fact. I did something similar to your sliding wall cabinet, I built a caddy for storing cutting boards, cookie sheets, etc., that slides out of a bottom cabinet the same way. I’m getting to the point where the hardest part of installing drawers is just getting up and down and reaching in!

Well done! When attaching your drawer fronts you can use playing cards to get your spacing, figure out where your hardware is going to go, and drill those holes uusing those to fasten your drawer front. This avoids having to nail and fix the holes and provides an accurate way to clamp the front tight when you apply a little glue to permanently attach the front.

I think that method assumes the front framing piece of wood is tall enough to have the harware go through it and not be above the top of it. Then you generally have to get longer screws to match/fit the drawer pulls

Loved this tip, so much easier than doing it to a finished drawer! Can I give you my tip for drawers? When I'm putting the front on, I have some little shims to make it an even gap all around, then I temporarily attach it with foam double sided tape. Push it on nice and snug and it holds it in place so you can put the screws in from inside. Just don't pull on the front to pull it out, reach inside and do it from the bottom, the tape isn't that strong! Oh another tip is to make a masking tape "handle" on the top of the drawer front, if you put them all on before putting hardware on and then close them all to look it makes it easier to open them again, especially with set-in drawer fronts.

Anna. I started drilling the holes for the cabinet hardware in the front and driving wood screws through those to hold the front to the drawer box while I pull it out and attach it from the rear. Then pull the screws and Mount the hardware as usual. Something I picked up on KZbin somewhere, but it’s fast and avoids nail holes to fill and double sided tape.

Another Anatastic method and video. Attempting to build cabinets for my son's first home, together. He has very little woodworking experience. I put him onto your site and I believe we can do one of your projects successfully. Hoping he will develop the confidence to do more himself, so I can stay home more. Thank you, Ana.

There are lots of methods to hold a drawer face in place as other people have mentioned in the comments. But if you are going to use a nail gun, I highly recommend pre-drilling the holes for the handle, and putting your nails very close to those holes where your handle would cover them up. 👍🏻 Thanks for the video:)

I love the sliding cabinets. Awesome job. I installed sliding shelves in my bathrooms and the kitchen. I wish I could do something with a couple of 'scary' cabinets that I can't get at. I have an old kitchen and no access to change some things. I have changed what I can and it makes my life so much easier.

Nice job. I would recommend to use a spacer to set the height above the frame instead of eyeballing it. That way, the drawer is perfectly parallel with the frame.

Great video. You could also drill the holes for the handles and use a couple of screws to temporarily mount the facade to the drawer carcass, then screw it from the back.

By far this is the best way to install hinges on a newly built drawer bar none! I took the time to plan my new drawers for a bathroom vanity remodel, did the measuring and calculations needed to make a perfect drawer installation. And then I watched your video! Drawings can be perfect, but cabinets and wood have their own personality. Your method is not only easy and fun to do, it makes up for the unnatural shapes taken on by older cabinets or new slightly warped wood. Thank you!

What a wonderful way to have a perfect measurements! And at 10:05 instead of nailing randomly, measure where you’re going to put the drawer pulls, and nail there, but use low energy so the nail doesn’t sink all the way. After screwing from the back, pull those nails, and you won’t have any holes to patch. Especially in melamine, you can never patch and paint to have it look perfect.
