Alright, time for my essay, because oh boy does this song need it. I absolutely adore this song; it is so full of passion, and it is instantly noticeable even if you don't understand what it means at first. I had to listen to it 10 times before I started making sense of it, and I had to look it up after that. For context, while Anberlin was (is? I think I saw they got back together a few years ago) not explicitly a "Christian" band, most (all?) of the members are Christians, and those themes often manifest in their music, usually through subtle imagery or themes, but it is never heavy-handed except arguably in this song, Fin. Okay, with that, let's start with what the lead singer, Stephen Christian, said: _"Fin" is a series of four stories, that all tie together in the line 'patron saint of lost causes.' The first story is a personal memoir about my life as a child and the pull on my soul even then. I deliberated even at eight years old, that it would be better that God and the devil would just both leave me alone. The second story is about a couple from my early teen years church who cried for a miracle. It was a promised miracle, and it never came about. That leaves an impression. The third is about a mentor that used the guse of 'missions work' to leave his family in shambles and eventually decay. That plays with your salvation, when one experiences it. (The fourth story is about) Billy, a traveling 'healer' who crippled my life and growth right in front of me. All these things and many, many others made me lose my salvation. But later in life i realized i needed to stop looking at Christians to see Christ. I wrestled with God, and he won."_ In essence, Stephen is highlighting one of the struggles in his Christian journey, one that many of us experience -- if there are Christians who are bad people, why would I follow Christ? From the song, his own personal feeling is evident from the line _"We're not questioning God, just those He chose to carry on His cross."_ This is a very common struggle, and a common question many inside and outside of Christianity will present as an argument against Christianity (or religion as a whole). However, Stephen eventually came to the realization (after the events of the song) that I think is the correct one -- and by the way, this is not specific only to Christianity/religion, this can be applied to any group or organization -- humanity is imperfect. It always has been, and always will be. To expect humans to be always perfect will always lead to disappointment and betrayal. To judge a group/religion or whatever based on a few bad people you met within that group is silly; it is the ideals that matter more. Stephen makes this point when he says "I needed to stop looking at Christians to see Christ." That is the point of the song in a nutshell.
