I had the blessing of seeing Heilung live last year and it was an overwhelming experience. I cried for half the time as it felt like every song was hammering out decades of trauma I'd held in my body and never knew it. The crowd was absolutely loving and caring for each other & the Earth. My particular ritual (they are very much more a ritual than a concert) was incredibly powerful when they had the Catawba Tribe of Native Americans precede them with sanctifying the space with sage before performing their own blessing. Then they returned at the end for a full out dance and song combined with Heilung's own ending ritual for a beautiful combined experience. Again, more tears. I will absolutely go again if given the chance to.

Lovely reaction! As other's have said seeing them live is an amazing experience. They call their shows Rituals and that is exactly what they are. When I saw them live it was an incredible spiritual journey. They started with a blessing and this reading Remember, that we all are brothers All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted On a technique note I believe Maria is singing in a Kulning style when she is singing those high piercing notes. The studio/music video version I think it is more obvious she is singing it that traditional nordic style used by women to call home cattle from the fields. Very powerful!

The lyrics for this piece are mainly taken from bracteates: golden, circular coins or amulets found in Northern Europe that date from the 4th to 7th centuries CE. They are often fitted with a decorated rim and loop, which indicates that they were meant to be worn and perhaps provide protection, fulfil wishes or for divination. The bracteates feature a very significant iconography influenced by Roman coinage. They were predominantly made from Roman gold, which was given to the North Germanic peoples as peace money. In Anoana, the listener has the chance to delve into a collection of likely encoded spells from the Migration Period and get a touch of magic from the Dark Ages. The intention of the piece is to playfully reconnect to an incantational language of a period where the North was richer in gold than any other region. Our forefathers presumably enjoyed a time of great prosperity and it may make us rethink how dark these ages really were.
@KessraАй бұрын
I love how you literally destructured the whole song into the individual voices and patterns they used as well as recreated with almost ease what some consider to be overtone singing, which produces two (or more) notes at the same time, which from what I was told is one of the hardest things to do. The whole act had clearly a very celtic or druidic feel to it, which is a common theme, I guess, for northern European countries ranging from Northern Germany to Ireland, Scottland and parts of Scandinavia.
@UncleGilliam3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the fantastic analysis. Maria Franz is a treasure, and the whole ensemble does amazing work setting a signature tone. I haven't seen them live yet, but a lot of their live recordings on KZbin have excellent sound editing like you noted in this one. While I'm delighted to see more people finding and loving Heilung, I am a little sad you came in with Anoana. It's from their more recent album, which is IMO their most "modern" one: it's the first they use stringed instruments, chord structures familiar from Medieval Christian music, etc. Their earlier work, especially Lifa, feels a lot more prehistoric/neo-Pagan/whatever you want to call it. It's fun to start with the band's early work and watch their style evolve. Since you want to hear more, I'd love to see you analyze something from that album. In Maidjan was the first song the group (including Maria) did live in concert, and it shows off a lot of the band's early strengths well. Krigsgaldr is also a great track. Though really, I'd love it if you watched the whole 75-minute concert and reacted to the whole thing. Your appreciation of all aspects of the performance is really rare and I'd love to see it applied to a full ritual.
