The GBA SP was the first handheld I remember having a rechargeable battery. I still remember using that as a bargaining chip when convincing my parents to purchase me one, how we'd save money overall on batteries.

Sometimes less is more. Often on these kinds of handhelds, I wouldn't even mind less face buttons so that it can be just a Gameboy, Colour, and GBA machine.

Personally I prefer 4 face buttons because I like to play SNES and PlayStation, but I do agree I prefer only 2 face buttons for 2 button systems.

I love the grey, but the bezel is a deal breaker for me. If it jad a black bezel like the others I would have totally ordered it. I ordered the silver instead.

This is honestly is exactly what the emulation handheld space NEED (and what I have wanted for years!). I kind of wish that Anbernic allowed themselves to create their own design a bit more. I bet they wanted to tap into the GBASP-nostalgia, but for me personally I would love to see a metallic housing, near bezel-less laminated display with a nice thin rubber border. I'm also thinking crazy ideas like putting the actual SoC-board on the top part utilizing the screen and a metallic casing as a heat spreaders and then allow the bottom to only house the I/O, audio, battery and charging. (cool and comfortable temperatures where your hands rest) I guess this would rule out HDMI connector due to the added flex cable complexity. But such a design could've made the device as small as a GBA SP, but being much cleaner looking than what Nintendo made in the early 2000's.

And Brandon, I don't disagree with your comment about what Anbernic has done this year, except I have been a fan of the RG556. I'm kinda surprised to see so little about it from you and all of the greats! It's pretty nice for what it can do and at its price point. A little more expensive, yes, but comfortable and capable. OMG I want a RetroDodo customized SP as well 😍 Clamshells are just a beauty, they can be carried around everywhere and are fancy! I would use it to play up to PS1, even because I actually don't have ideas about what Dreamcast and N64 games could fit the lack of sticks... The rattling and the buttons issues maybe could be fixed through some DIY mods that will come out in the future, we'll see. But this time Anbernic nailed it!

Thanks for the honest and in depth review. I am growing a bit annoyed with the kind of numerous "small issues" that are scattered in all their products. I bought from them the Rg35XX, the RG 35XX PLus and my favorite, the RG Arc D. While I LOVE the dsign and form factor of all their products, the issues with the OS, the tinkering needed (including updated the OS) and the DPAD inperfections of the RG ARC D for example; leave me not jumping on this one and waiting a year; until I hear they fixed these issues before shipping, someone on Amazon starts selling it with a better OS or they release a new model.
