Well I'm pretty sure that ABS has prevented a great number of accidents, and airbags have probably prevented a fair number of brain and spinal injuries, so I think you're selling those features short. The main issue is with the other so-called ADAS systems like lane keeping, sign recognition and collision avoidance. These systems are mostly annoying and even dangerous in some cases. ANCAP hanging two of the five stars on these wastes of time and money is so stupid, I no longer look to ANCAP ratings when judging the real safety of a vehicle. I agree that those are just window dressing for the sales brochures and to impress the easily impressed. The reason I say these other features are actually dangerous, is I've had lane keeping try to drive me into oncoming traffic on country roads, and collision avoidance has reacted inappropriately to parked cars and scrub on winding country roads. I turn both of those off quite regularly if I remember.
@AusKipper15 күн бұрын
There should be 2 separate star ratings per vehicle, one for physically how it crashes, and a separate one for nanny electronics, and the nanny electronics one should be reduced if it has excessive false positives during regular day to day driving.

But the i30 tested terrible in adult protection
@Patrick-8575 күн бұрын
@chefgav1 I don't think that was OPs point, which has little to do with the specific car, and everything to do with the ridiculous ratings system we have now. Take for example that horribly unsafe Chinese G-Wagon copy that had one wheel lift off the road under moderately heavy braking, but got 5 stars because it had all the required electronic driver annoyance features. The current ratings system is no longer fit for purpose. The consumer needs a ratings system that tells them at a glance how safe the vehicle is. Crash prevention and crash performance are entirely different things. This ratings system could for arguments sake create a situation wherein a hypothetical car may get five stars despite performing terribly in a side on collision, offering substandard protection to occupants. The hypothetical car may get this high rating due to "AI Powered" crash avoidance features, which themselves were not even tested. Said features, even if they worked perfectly, could not prevent some inebriated Darwin Award nominee from running through a stop sign at twice the speed limit into the aforementioned AI powered wondercar with it's 5 star rating. The buyer of the car may not be aware that the crash performance had taken a back seat to autonomous systems that couldn't possibly have avoided such an accident, even if they were not a buggy mess, which all such systems are.

They consistently design stuff that physically cannot be built in practice, due to them understanding numbers, but apparently having zero understanding of how things go together, or any spatial reasoning. Frustrating to say the least, considering that in construction, engineers are basically God. The solution is clearly to remove everything that's not directly related to crash testing from the ratings, like it was before these organisations lost their minds. At the very least they shouldn't be weighting their ratings with features that have little to no evidence to support their efficacy, and may even contribute to accidents. Was hit at a similar speed by a courier van while driving a falcon, didn't feel much, the van looked like it had been used by a suicide bomber, and the falcon was a write off, so probably a much bigger impact. The electronic safety items are useless. My car frequently gives false beeps, which stop before I can look at the screen to tell me what it is worried about. It makes the same beeping sounds for everything. Most common false readings are lane departure on bus stops and water filled ruts, and also brake for tree shadows across roads and safety barriers on bends. A hired Sportage last year had active steering correction, it pulled me back into oncoming traffic when I crossed the centre line after completing an overtake. It also pulled me off the exit when it saw the join in the road surfaces. The sportage corrected steering by using differential braking, which felt very scary. This year I hired a corolla, it steered me into oncoming traffic to avoid a shadow of a tree. At least the corolla did it by steering, but several times it did it wrong. It did have the ability to keep in lanes on a highway (self driving) when it got it right. It also had speed sign recognition showing the current speed limit, but would forget after not seeing a sign for a few minutes, it also got confused at school speeds limits with variable times. In my experience, this electronic stuff is just a rubbish gimmicky distraction, the tech. is too immature go be taken seriously.

@@PlumbBob-FGX Fun fact: In 1970, when Victoria's population was about half what it is today, and a greater percentage of the population didn't own cars when compared to today, the road safety campaign slogan was something along the lines of "Let's get the toll below 1000". 296 died on the roads last year.

It totally rotted out until the whole thing collapsed such was the cheese of the poor quality steel it was made from. Even if i had been properly treated and protected the steel delaminated and just fell to pieces. The front wasn't any better. It couldn't be towed away it had to be lifted off the deck.

ANCAP could avoid some of this criticism by not constantly using stars even when the test procedures change. We know 5 stars for 2020 does not mean the same as 5 stars in 2024. So every time they change the rules they could go crazy with the emoji choices and assign triangles, circles, diamonds, tsunami waves, or gorgonzola cheese icons to indicate a degree of separation in the test results that cannot be comparable. But they won't do that because it would expose more readily that not as many test results are as current as they would have the ordinary punter believe.

GOtta ask, would the shift of driver position from right to left affect the safety rating of a vehicle that is tested in Europe? It seems that is could have a bit of an affect on the safety with position behind the engine shifted and the seat belt over the other shoulder.

Watching from the US, I have to wonder if Hyundai's check must have been lost in the mail. Here their cars are slightly less ugly than Mitsubishi's, and along with partner K backwards N, top the list of stolen cars because you only need a screwdriver or USB cable to drive away. Maybe the i30 is less safe in Australia because the steering wheel is on the right rather than left? Maybe ancap put the barrier, or the driver dummy, (not to confused with ancap managers) on the wrong side?

When I worked in car sales it gave me the absolute ***** reading different vehicles when the actual vehicle was better in an actual crash... the best example was when the Australian built Commodore base model had a 5 star....yet every model above was a 4 star because it didn't have an indicator of an indicator that a seatbelt wasn't done up.... I am more interested in what is going to happen in an actual accident...because if you're required to not ensure your children are properly strapped in...then the car is not necessarily the issue. Kids make everything different...(and Covid) but then all of a sudden a Volvo seems like the sensible choice/not many vehicles available. I will say again, whenever possible a 2010 Volvo never, ever take your car to to the Hobart dealership. It's good for my own ego that nobody randomly on facebook totally ignored from someone who previously worked in the industry....I'd never recommend and a used Volvo, but I never take my own advice. But everyone who ignored me, 2 CVT X trails and the ZD30 did what you would expect.... my Volvo is still going. Just never take it to the dealership....the replaced the light globes that were working. I replaced the ones that weren't. It only cost $600. So Tasmania... don't ever go to the Porsche, Merc, Volvo dealership... they will rip you off, and in an older vehicle, clearly have someone retarded fix your car. If you're as mental enough as I am...drive past a few independent mechanics and if there's anything French or Italian...they're the place to go to. But the ANCAP is rubbish. There's too much on driver aids now. Which don't mean a thing if someone smashes into you. I know with my Volvo, the doors are so heavy as is the car that at least I'm 2 feet away from an accident if someone T-Bones me. And it has all the safety features that they just have... But I'd never recommend buying one...new or used, as an ex Carsalesperon... fortunately I got the most reliable engine...but 98RON and 11L/100km is good. Haha... but I'm going to drive it until it dies and take the seats out and turn them into lounge chairs.

John, I stopped taking notice of ANCAP years ago. I would refer to the European testing and then insurance data from the USA before I took notice of testing by ANCAP. They are an embarrassment.

I do generally support the concept of crash testing for cars of which many are intended to be sold. However considering how ANCAP has gone to seed I suggest it might be better to replace laboratory crash testing with doing a proper investigation of every actual crash. Obviously under my scheme problems will show up later rather than sooner - so that is a drawback. However what will show up is real-life experience rather than wishful thinking about software beeping, savage braking and steering wheel jerking.

Does ancap have a paint protection rating? Generally, in crashes, the cars paint may get scratched, chipped or scuffed, especially in the crashes the set up. So why would they not have a rating for that? If I was CEO of ancap and I realised that a paint protection rating wasn't on the cards, I would certainly introduce one, to get more from the tsxpayers.

Driving any new model now gives me a sense of anxiety before I reach the end of the street. Pinging for unknown reasons, then as you search the dash cluster for the reason behind the pinging, the eye sensor starts bleeping because you looked away from the road. By this time the speed alert is sounding because you're 51km/h in the 50 zone due to distraction and the expletives begin to roll. Blood pressure rises along with the anger. Hardly a 5 star safety environment eh

Why is a ‘private’ company doing the testing? I’ve been involved importing products for the HVAC industry and refrig, electric and gas appliances. Also exporting HVAC products to Europe, Middle East, S-Africa and NZ. I’ve had a hand in drafting Aust Standards. In all cases, it’s up to the importer/wholesaler to pay for and organise testing to the appropriate regulations. If you don’t do it, you can’t sell it. Why isn’t it up to the car company to do the testing? ANCAP could do some random tests to keep them honest. The tests should be crash testing / survivability only .. so a car tested 10 yr ago can be directly compared to a car tested yesterday. All the ancillary items, like seat-belt warning, lane change of whatever, should be listed in a separate table.
@Chris_the_Muso5 күн бұрын
It's got nothing to do with Australian standards. Those are completely separate and work as you describe. ANCAP has nothing to do with standards and everything to do with skimming taxpayers money while completely misleading them about what a safe vehicle really is. As John said, it's possible for a vehicle with a five star ANCAP rating to have poor side intrusion protection, and in fact that is pretty much a given with most unibody designs.

@ exactly, and that’s why the manufacturers should be footing the bill. .. but of course that would mean that there’s no need for ANCAP
