I never use the compare family trees feature at Ancestry because it's fraught with perils. Instead, I view the list of trees and examine the top few for sources I might need. If I find something useful, I click on that source and attach it to the appropriate person in my tree. No need to import trees or individuals from trees, just the sources.

Very useful cleanup tips. I am very wary about importing another's family tree; usually don't do it. But, I do look at them after first researching records. What I look for are DNA matches, other possible facts that I don't have yet and photos. I've even found family because we had identical or similar fam photos. I have found this to be very helpful.

Very interesting and informative. One thing I find that I struggle with is that I was told that often more than one sibling can carry on a parents name with the high mortality rate at the time and also, people became parents at a much younger age. Sometimes I look at my tree and wonder what the relationship is. Another thing I realized is that the spelling of a name often comes down to the person who wrote it on the official document. My great-grandfather's name was Erie and I have found it written as Eric, Eriee, Eriec! Thank you for all you do! I have learned so much from your channel in my ancestry journey!

Thank Mary. You might also consider the different ways of spelling the names where transcription errors on the clerks part. Many of these records are copies of the original records. And when they copy them over they may not have been able to understand what they were reading. Additional transcription errors can happen in the digital form, as volunteers are transcribing the various records. Just a thought. Forgive my typos, I’m using voice dictation.

I frequently find items to clean up when I look at someone's children and their parents birth's or deaths are listed multiple times. This is such a great video to help clean up duplicate information. I liked what you said about targeting the research since there's not a lot of records for that time. In rural North Carolina. You said to "create a good research plan. Sit down and strategize what it is you want to find." I don't suppose you have a video on how to create a plan or strategy on what to look for? How to approach courthouses? Graveyards? Libraries from that county? Etc.

Rather than approaching your changes to Mary Parks by deleting the name, I would highlight the name I want to eliminate, discern the source, click on the source, attribute the source to the name I want and remove the link to the name I want to delete. Once saved, the name I want to delete will be the one with no sourcing. I would add a Mollie Parks under Also Known As to facilitate locating her in the FTM index.

What is very frustrating about Ancestry is that you can’t make consistent town, county, state facts. If you copy onto another tree years ago they’re still there and you can’t go through just places of birth, places of marriage, places of death or residence. I know County’s towns change boundaries change names, even disappear but there has to be an easy way to make things look consistent

As you type place names in a field, typically Ancestry will start to auto-populate locations. You'll want to use those in the dropdown menu every time as the industry is trying to standardize locations for better search functions. Same goes on FamilySearch.

When I get a name like "Mollie Mary Parks", I take the name "Mollie" and move it to "Also known as" in the +ADD part of FACTS. Only "Mary" shows as the name.

I would use the one you have. I would not start over again with a new tree, it’s too much work. Start with yourself and work backwards and use tree tags to mark each ancestor as “verified” as you go. Take one profile at a time, clean it up, make it right and move on.

After using Ancestry for decades now, I just can't get past the fact that having so many individual trees merely propagates bad information. I much prefer the FamilySearch approach. Documenting the same (or usually the same) personas on one tree is so much more useful.

I've had some of these examples in several of my family trees, especially when it comes to marriages... (with proven images of marriage "registries") I'd be a bit careful when it comes to baptism, birth registries and marriages, because in many countries (at least for what I've been able to see) they registered in one or more churches (depending on the parents or to be wed partners) some as a form of license, others to recognize children, etc, it gets shadier with common names, and with nicknames that could belong to different names (sally, molly, mary, nancy, etc) during an specific time frame when the names in the birth/baptism would change to what they were known as or as what was in their marriage/death registries (e.g. in many catholic churches in the past, the first name would be the same as the godmother/godfather's name, then the real first name as middle name, and sometimes added a third name before the surname, not taking in consideration how many personas used the mother's maiden surname as middle name of their children), then add the nicknames... All in all (imho) I think that as long as you have an image of an official document, not to delete the name but to add it as a plausable proof until you can't deny the information does not belong to your "mary/sally/polly" but to another person that happens to have the same name and married to someone with the same name (which I've encountered way too many times) lol, especially due to age.... many older men paid money to have their newly-wed wives appear older, many men said they were older to be able to go to war or practice some jobs [And as in Chinese culture, the birth year would be changed in many paper trails due to taboo, in order to keep the "soul" of the children safe, both in birth and in death] Thank you by the way for all your interesting videos Edit: I just had to point I paused to write the comments above at min 12ish so many things I said you may have already mentioned lol

How woyld you clean up mistakes? I have two brothers in a family but one is really the brothers son. I imported the info years ago and now looking at each, more in depth. I cannot figure out how to correct this without deleting all the info I have on the Son and his downline. I have found a few of these in my tree. I really need help with this. Hi Kim. Don't delete anything just reassign them properly. Write down their names on a piece of paper how it should look. Then... Look at the two brothers (we'll call them Brother A and Brother B, Brother B is the one that is actually a son of Brother A)... To fix this go to one of the PARENT PROFILE (mother) of the current Brothers A&B. Edit, Edit Relationships and remove with the X the one that is really not their son (Brother B). Save. Keep reading. Then go to the other parent profile (father of the brothers) and do the same thing disconnecting Brother B. Keep reading. Then go into the profile of Brother A, Edit, Edit Relationships... add the original Brother B as a son to Brother A (remember to search for someone already in your tree, don't add a new one or you'll have duplicates of Brother B). Hope that helps.

I have to say you would have done better to have chosen a record with multiple census records containing duplicate alternate names, dates and places. The OWT example includes no data worth preserving, especially with two OWT sources. I'm sitting here shaking my head.

Hi Connie, since you mentioned removing nicknames from the primary name and making them an alternate name, I have a question. If a person went by their middle name, and thus all the records use the person's middle name rather than the first name (or they might have the first initial of the first name followed by the middle name), how should you handle this?

I use the full name as the primary name... and use Alternate names for other variations. You can use Also Known As for nicknames like Bubba or Shorty if that is what he was called, but the search engine does not use the AKA fact as searchable. So I'd stick with the Name facts and use the full name as Primary.

I dont know what Connie would say but you can always add the middle as an alternative. Same as with first initial then middle name. I have even done the same if you know a married name but cant add him (obituaries and Burials are often under married name). I want which ever tree you are using to find all records. Once you find the husband, you could then delete that alternative name.

It's an old school thing that was common a long time ago, before computers, to help easily see what is a surname. When scanning journal transcripts and such, you'll see those surnames pop out of the documents when they are in all caps. It's really a holdover, but I like it so I continue to teach it.

Please note, the source 'One World Tree' should NEVER be used as the (thankfully the now retired) program to 'collect and combine ancestors 'which was created by Ancestry many years ago had a flawed algorithm. It was notorious for combining persons without any real duplicate facts. For instance, I have a relative from Hampshire England who I did not have the exact birth date for at the time and so I had entered 'abt. 1730' the 'One World Tree' PROGRAM NOT A PERSON decided that a person born in the USA in 1735 was the same person despite the fact my Hampshire-born relative had an exact marriage date and place in Hampshire, England and an exact burial date again in Hampshire, England. By the time the 'One World Tree' program had finished, it had combined the two persons together and my relative from Hampshire England who had NEVER set foot out of his village area in Hampshire, England let alone set foot in the USA run like this... Born in USA 1735 - married in Hampshire, England in 1755 - married in USA 1755 to a different woman. Then he had a number of children born in either Hampshire England or USA some even in the same years as each other - the death of MY Hampshire relative was replaced by the USA persons year which was some 20 years after he actually died in Hampshire England - and the USA parents were added to them and these were a combination of the USA father and mother! The problem was that only for a VERY short time were we able to amend the combined tree and within a year we had the ability stopped from there on in we were NOT ABLE TO EDIT the info. I discovered my 5th ggp's info had been mangled too late to do anything about it after I found the correct baptism and there for the parents. this led people to pick either the Hampshire father or the USA father and then one of the mothers so we had 4 combinations of parents for the wrongly combined person! Even today I run across trees which show the combined data set and they cite 'One World Tree'. It took a long time for Ancestry to accept the program algorithm was faulty and stop it from populating further Krupt trees. Now thankfully due to long-term ancestry users like myself (I have been here from the beginning) campaigning for its removal it now has been removed. The only place you run across it is on people's trees as Ancestry has completely removed the program and the database it created. Unfortunately, you DO NOT tell your listeners this fact. You should re-edit this video and mention that the 'One World Tree' is not a reliable source due to its faulty algorithm which is why ancestry COMPLETELY removed it as a tool to generate a data set which combined trees based more often than not simply on the names being the same!

I was trying a clean up using your advice. In some cases it was brilliant. Not all of the fact boxes are on a white background with an edit button. Some (including duplicates) have a grey backgound and no edit button. Do you have any suggestions how to get around this, please?.

Thanks for the video! Helpful as always! Is there a way to link family members to sources from a members profile page? For example, if several family members appeared on a census together, clicking the census source on one of their profiles shows attachment to all of them. But sometimes a name is on the document, such as a ship manifest, but it is transcribed incorrectly (someone's name misspelled) & they don't show when adding the source. I have found myself having to search for the misspelled name then add to "existing member on tree". I can't find an easier way to add members to a source if their names don't show in the list when originally adding a source.

I typically don’t use ethnicity estimates at all for genealogy research. It’s interesting to look at but it provides very little real clues. Additionally it’s constantly changing when they update the sample set. Stick with the cousin matches that’s where the gold is.

I've always removed "nick names" of people and quotes. After you mentioned having alternate names, and adding to the algorithm I was thinking those may have a place.

Capitalizing a surname is an old school way of writing genealogy reports to help people skimming through to see the names easily... you know... before computers. I still do it as a practice so I know the birth name as opposed to a married name for women. I like it. It is still easy for me to read through my own files. There really is no need to do it today other than personal choice.

If I want to add an alternate name, I've selected add fact - Also Known as- The name is added but it appears at the end of all of the other facts. On your screen, you have the "Alternate" name displaying at the top near the birth record. Same for Birth Records. Something is better than nothing. A source could be a person, family lore, a privately held bible, a book in a library. Not everything is online at Ancestry.

Not a scam. You need to have a FamilySearch account first, in order to use Relative Finder.

Ancestry may not like quotation marks, however, people have used more than one first name in their life, And their birth certificate sometimes doesn’t really help so you should be able to show all the alternative names or nicknames an ancestor or relative of an ancestor may have. And immigrants from other countries who Americanize their names need to be shown their original name and their Americanized name. I use original name and Americanized name in parentheses.

Thanks for showing how this can happen. I've run across other trees with this and felt I could not trust any information on it because of the multiple entries. It looks sloppy. But I can see how it's hard to keep up and fix also with thousands of ancestors ! I'm entering my tree into ancestry by hand from my FTM computer program (really old). Kind of a do over. It is my understanding from Ancestry that the dashboard may look different between the UK and US. I know that they typically roll out new services to the US first, then Canada and the UK next, then the world. It all depends on what part of the system you are in. I hope that helps.

I've used and worked with ancestry trees for several decades now... I recently came upon a problem I never had previously. After trying to merge some duplicate ancestors, I somehow ended up with 2 wives for the same husband with the same names and birth and marriage dates. When I try deleting one, both delete... Jay... where are you seeing the two wives? Which view are you in? I ask because, if you are in the family view tree... and there are cousin who married... you might see two sets of families in part of your tree. I would also check every link in both tree views to make sure you didn't accidentally link a sibling or child or someone that shouldn't be there.

Jay. Your email with your tree address got caught in my spam filter. I looked at it and deleted it for your privacy. At a glance, Sara Ellen Kenney and her hubby... their children are born before their parents. So that's not right, something is wrong there. I'd start with that association.

I have so many questions! I will not ask them all today. When I use the Ancestry DNA ThruLines, some of my ancestors are only showing 1 DNA match with me, even though there are other DNA matches in line before them. For example, my dad's parents and his mother's parents all show 1 DNA match with me and it is my 2nd cousin. My 1st cousins, who both have done the DNA tests, do not show up as DNA matches in ThruLines. My 2nd cousin is the child of one of my 1st cousins, so I am confused as to why they don't show up in ThruLines.

@@GenealogyTV I think that the key was linking your DNA to your tree. My 2nd cousin has their tree linked to their DNA, but my 1st cousins either don't or haven't made trees. I will try the private coaching soon. Thanks a bunch for your help!

It would be better to show how to make a duplicate fact with more sources the primary fact, e.g. just open the fact and check the preferred box, then delete the fact with less sources that is duplicated. Too much duplication of effort in this video for my work process, I learnt nothing new.

My only source to get into ancestry dot com is the android app. I don't own a PC and don't have the paid sub for ancestry, can you do a video on how to build a tree with these limits? 🙏
