Nah definitely Company of heroes. The squad system and army sizes, the way you build bases, the graphics, even things like the minimap and the icons on there are similar to CoH. It's very clear they were inspired by it and I don't blame them, CoH is one of the best RTS games of all time.

My biggest issue with most RTS games is that it can get quickly overwhelming trying to build and manage a million soldiers. 10 units seems like a good pace for me.

Controller isn't a limiting factor when it comes to placing your own building locations. BFME2 you could place buildings and walls wherever you want. By the way there's a free custom version of it now that makes it better then it ever was.

I've given the game a try and honestly, so far i'm satisfied with what i got. Though the game has some negatives that really piss me off... In the campaign with the Anglo-Saxons on 1 mission you play basically in a castle... We should be able to build fortifications like that. Also, the biggest map is so damn small... i had my fun in 6 hours straight of playing, then i got bored. We need buildable fortifications, meaning we need stone as resource. We also need bigger maps and the possibility to go Free For All instead of just being forced in an alliance. Other than that... the game is pretty sweet, especially when you go in battle-cam and see a German cavalry charge through the enemy ranks... blood, guts and gore all over the place. :D :D :D

Now when you said rts, I was ready for hopefully what would be great game. Rts is probably my favourite genre of games. The likes of c an c, starcraft, supreme commander. Just to name a few. An for a moment there I thought this would make a great game from what I've seen, an the points you mentioned. But as soon as you said I can't build a bace that takes over the entire map. Bought this game after watching the review. I was impressed at first but quickly became bored with how basic it is and the complete lack of functions. Basic stuff like setting routes or not having 5 of your units standing idly by watching as 5 of your troops engage an enemy unit whilst the rest of your units come under fire from archers, no matter how many times you click your units to attack the enemy they'll just stand there watching and dying. If you select a few units you should be able to scroll through just those units instead of scrolling through all of your units. In 2 days of playing it's crashed my console 3 times and I've had other camera freeze bugs, floating enemies, siege machines controlled by ghost units, units getting stuck and not won't move no matter what. Overall it feels like s basic overpriced unfinished product that even if it worked flawlessly would still get old fast due to how basic the gameplay is and only having 10 unit limit. 13 years after Battle for middle earth 2 yet it's not even a quarter of the game.

There is a 50% off steam sale, I would not have paid full price for it, just because, as noted, the campaign is a bit thin, the units are a bit thin per faction and the replayability of it all is somewhat deteriorated by no multiplayer I could find. Also, I am fairly certain the AI is setup to produce troops faster, which is especially apparent on Insane. I was able to easily defeat all of the other AI levels in Skrimish except Insane so far, after only playing for a few days. This may have been changed more recently in patches though, so I can't say how it was before. There were a lot of complaints on forums about the AI. Some believed it was way too hard, others thought it was easy once you figured out the game itself.

I had to laugh when you said about resenting the fact that the Normans won at Hastings. I've had a keen interest in history my whole life and I try to be as impartial as possible about the outcomes of historical events, see both sides etc, but I have never got over my initial hate of the Normans winning the battle that I've had since I was a child. Looks like it could be fun but also a bit basic, i'd prefer something with proper base building and a few more units per faction. With only 10 unit types per side is there a tiered tech tree with prerequisite buildings (like C&C et al) or is unit availability only limited by the cost to produce it?

This game isn't really like a traditional RTS. It is more of a company of heroes type of game, and is about micro-managing squads rather than base building. In a multiplayer match, you will definitely have enough to control without having to worry about more complex base building. There are only 3 tech tiers that you upgrade to from your main building, and those will unlock more tiers of armour and more units, but each faction only has 4 units. As I said, this game is not about base building, so tech and base building is very basic so that you can focus on controlling your squads and attacking your enemy's villages and resources. If you like Company of Heroes and Dawn of War 2, you will like this, but don't get it if you are looking for a traditional RTS game.

This reminds me very much of an old game called praetorians although much more modern obviously. It was a really good game for its time. This looks pretty good although i must admit it looks a bit bare, would like to see more faction Perhaps some mid east factions and would hope that at some point they will flesh out the single player Campaigns a bit but it does look like a really good game, might just have to give it a look :)

Thanks for the review, but just based on the thumbs up thumbs down aspects at the end, the thumbs down stuff clearly outweighs the thumbs up stuff. So, while I agree with you on nearly every single point, I don't agree that it still justifies a buy. An okay game to "look up", but you literally get all the entertainment you're ever going to get from this game simply by watching this or any review. Def a 'no' on this game. The trailer for this years ago is very misleading I thought it was going to be some sort of a third-person stall game with a technical combat system which I would probably prefer over what the final product was nothing like that trailer.
