Why is it so hard to say "no" to a good yarn sale, even when we already have a stash? I'm thinking aloud about why we do what we do when it comes to our yarn. Thanks for spending some time with me!

Hi Mary 🤗 very well said! “Be prepared” is a motto most of us use…it applies to all areas of our lives, yarn included, if it’s important to you. My mum, who is 83, grew up in a time where food was scarce therefore she feeds us so that we never feel hungry, like she did…I didn’t understand why my mum always sent cooked meals to us & bags of groceries until I stopped to think about it and realised that’s why! Thank you for sayings…it’s ok 🙏🏼🥰🧶🤩

It's amazing what our parents and grandparents went through to get us here! How profound that your mother was able to give you better than what she had herself! I feel like that's a goal of most parents. Big hugs to you, sweet friend! 💞💞

Hi Mary! ❤ I was so relieved to hear you go this direction. We tend to forget just how recently it was that you could have more than enough of anything. Sound psychology and sociology!

"Relieved" is exactly the emotion I hoped to evoke in this little video essay - thank you! I sure wish you and I lived closer and we could just "shoot the breeze" together in person! 💕💗

@@slowcrochet I agree! We could email, but would you be interested in being an old-fashioned pen pal? How much fun would that be?! I know you're a busy mom, just a thought.

I have a beautiful collection of yarn. I make clothing and heirloom afghans and doilies. I do not shop in big box stores except to make novelty items just for fun. I have waited a lifetime of minimum resources to reach this point and it is joyful.

I'm so glad for you! How wonderful that you are living the joy of delayed gratification! I'm sure it wasn't easy getting to the place you are now. Out of curiosity, what fiber do you prefer for your heirloom afghans? That's something I've been pondering, and I'd love to hear your perspective, if you're willing to share it! ☺💞💞

I don't worry about my yarn.. I worked hard all my life I'm 73 and if I want yarn...I get it .I've earned the time to sit back and knit or crochet cuz tomorrow is a different day . I never feel guilty.. I have my own money .and I do pay my own bills lol

What an interesting topic! Thank you once again for provoking my deeper thinking. I feel fairly certain that hoarding is a natural human instinct that has contributed to our survival over hundreds or even thousands of years. I’m sure that, for example, Neolithic toolmakers kept a little stash of rocks and pebbles waiting to be turned into useful tools! I will definitely continue to mull over this topic - thank you, Mary! ❤

You remind me of a friend who went to a flint knapping retreat where they teach attendees how to make their own arrowheads and bows. Selecting the right kind of stone was just one of the layers of complexity! It is amazing to think of how we still reflect so clearly the people who came before us! 💗 Always a joy to hear from you, Ms. Helen! 💞

We were just talking about storage units a few days ago. Here in New England, we’re seeing them pop up everywhere. We think it started booming with the pandemic. Thinking people have been buying and storing just in case it happens again and we’ll be seeing empty shelves.

How interesting! I feel like storage units been a part of regular life for quite awhile around here. We've used them to help transition between moves and renovations, but it does make one wonder if they will end up as glorified landfills eventually.

I can't help wondering what Laura Ingalls Wilder would say if she could see the amount of storage units we have in the US today. My husband has a storage unit that is 95% dedicated to his hobby of tabletop miniatures! (And he has no shame about it whatsoever. 😅). But I certainly experience a lot of anxiety when it comes to spending money on my hobbies, and I never thought of our ancestral origins before, so this is very interesting to me!

As a retired person, my pension isnt keeping up with inflationary times. I buy yarn on sale to keep a small supply because im afraid of price increases or supply chain breakdowns. But, i do this with canned and dry goods, too. The toilet paper shortage was when i decided to keep my needs covered, yarn included. 😂
